K-On is dedicated solely to the weeaboo-loli group. The only redeeming feature is the animation isn't too bad, and it can occasionally make you laugh. K-On!! is, by all intensive purposes, fan service. I wish there were a less.. deragetory word for these kinds of people, but Weeaboo is the only thing I know. I used to be super-in to that kind of stuff, and loved this shit (e.g. Lucky Star, Magical Play), but now seeing how nuts some people go over K-On!! baffles me. One of my friends is literally obsessed with the blond of the show, Mugi. I mean like, he has plush dolls and posters, and his desktop background is an embarrassingly fan service-ee Mugi lying provocatively on a table in her underwear.
I can't watch it. I watch much less anime than I used to, and when I do it's usually good anime, which for some reason is almost always way too short. Some of my favorites I would highly suggest, if you haven't seen them are: Spice and Wolf, Eden of the East, Bakemonogatari, Arakawa Under the Bridge.

i can't watch any anime these days without cringing, i don't even know why i try.. only good ones were spice & wolf, akagi, kaiji, nodame cantabile, probably forgetting a few aswell

I do have a Mio breast mousepad though which is really comfortable ^^ BECK is my all time favorite anime :D. I am so excited for the live action (which came out last weekend in japan) it's not even funny. It kills me that I have to wait for the Japanese DVD release, and then the fansubs.

I dont want to comment too specifically anime details, but I find anime preference to be fascinating. Among people I talk to, it is so varied. I have disagreed greatly even with people I otherwise feel have good taste or even similar tastes. I think it has a lot to do with expectations going in.
I've never seen K-On, didnt seem appealing aside from good drawings. I liked Lucky star though sort of overrated but I think it was fun, aside from too much inside jokes. What didnt you like about Mononoke? (Only thing I had against it was I felt it was too similar plotwise to nausicaa)
Those ratings lists are cool, I should do one, but I suck at rating things numerically. It would be so inconsistent lol

I love K-on! cause I'm a victim of the moe fad.
If you can get past the fact that nothing ever happens, and all they ever do is eat cake and drink tea, then it's a pretty good show :D

Idk...in my opinion anime has gone from going down hill to crashing into the ground at light speed with the coming of stuff like K-on...actually, probably just mainly K-on. At least stuff like Lucky Star had some interesting/fun moments and didn't base itself completely around moe cuteness. K-on...it's the epitome of meoblob cuteness, and that's all there is to it. And because it's so popular with the half of anime watchers that watch just for moe cuteness, we now have even more of this type of anime because of how successful it is (anyone heard of Sora no Woto? The whole anime's a goddamn K-on clone).
Still, I guess I can understand why people like it so much. And it makes sense that since the type of anime watchers who watch stuff like K-on are the ones that spend the most money on anime, more and more anime these days are going down the road of moe cuteness. Doesn't make me any less sad the quality of anime is going down hill in general -.-

I watched 2 episodes of K-ON and i felt disgusted with myself with the thought of watching the 2nd episode after the 1st one. I just cant imagine myself watching that type of anime. You gotta be a kid or a girl to enjoy that... well thats my opinion. Not a fan of moe/loli/ecchi anime
I liked Beck and finished the manga too. It was really good for my taste. And DMC is one of the funniest things Ive seen in anime. I love Krauser haha

I used to watch anime years ago, then I thought it was all terrible. I think it was all Lucky Star's fault. I remember that people had Hirano Aya do a Timotei impression during her press conference at Anime Expo. Really? AMERICANS were requesting a parody of an old Japanese commercial that they've never ever seen? I mean seriously. In my mind, it's the equivalent of Japanese people asking Seth Macfarlane to do one of his impressions of old 70's TV shows. It just doesn't computer.
The fandom didn't mesh with me, and I saw that this was the kind of crap that would be the modern face of anime. Weird, dumb fetishes, AT, moe, all that.
----
So then the other week, I downloaded a top 30 music list from Oricon. I study Japanese, and even if I don't understand a song, I still believe in passive learning just from offhand listening. There's a surprising amount of grammar and learning that happens when I listen, but that is a topic for another time.
I noticed that the one of my favorite songs was "Ho-Kago Tea Time - No, Thank You!" Loved it. I assumed that it was just one of those all female bands like ZONE or SCANDAL. I looked it up and I was surprised. OMG. One of my favorite songs is an anime song. Anime. The source of all things evil. But I loved the songs and I gave K-On! a try just for that.
There's just so many things I hate about it. Things like the canned one-dimensional stereotypes of characters we've all seen before. Bad animation that makes people's legs look funny. Atypical jokes like "HURHUR YOUR BOOBS ARE BIG. LOL HERS ARE SMALL" and "LOL SHE DOESN'T LIKE SCARY THINGS SO LET'S SCARE HER." Camera shots of short skirts and legs. The annoying nicknames like "Azu-nyan."
But I keep watching it. I'm on Episode 10 right now. I am, of course, always holding out for them to actually play music 'cause that's what I love most about the show. Even then, there's something about the charm of its "slice of life" style, the fact that even though nothing really happens, I just don't really care. And yet I'm aware of how this show is like, the most otaku nerd show out there, which really doesn't seem to match my original reason for not watching anime.
I'm a bit biased though. I'm watching the show without English subtitles so I probably understand only half of what's going on if even that, and the fact that they do common everyday things makes it a good choice to actually learn useful Japanese. I'm thinking about picking up the manga as well.
If there was a K-On live action I'd totally be into it.

Thirding on DMC. I cried from laughing so hard in that anime.

I tend to enjoy slice of life anime, but for whatever reason the two episodes of K-On! that I watched just couldn't make me watch a third. Could be because when I watch an anime I either watch one episode and then immediately watch it all in rapid succession, or try out an episode or two and never watch the rest of the series. There tends to be very few in between with me, and it's also why I stopped watching anime while it was still running (though I must admit it's also because I'm waiting for uncensored episodes. >_>)

summer wars was highly cliche, unoriginal, and pretty kiddy, but still immensly enjoyable

Damn, the OP is long. Didn't the title suffice in explaining what you thought of the anime?

I agree with what you said but I disagree with Lucky Star belonging to that category. Lucky Star is a parody of moe and despite the cutesy atmosphere is actually a fairly well-written and brilliantly animated comedy. People shit on Lucky Star a lot but I think the humor of it didn't go along well with a lot of american audiences. The humor is in many situations quite dry and completely character based. The characters are cliche with the intention and purpose of parody and satire rather than the regurgitated stereotypes that clutter up so much of the harem/moe bullshit that is released these days.
Lucky Star is funny. While the moe-crowd might love it for the cute little girls, there is an aspect to the show that isn't present at all in a show like K-On. K-On isn't very funny so it has no appeal aside from the moe. Same with a show like Hidamari Sketch, the only reason to watch it is because of cute little girls doing cute things.

I loved K-On!, I watched like 5 eps of K-On!! and quit. What can I say... when the same shiz goes on and on and on you get bored.

I remember watching one of the episodes where the blue haired girl was talking with the twins about whether they were identical or fraternal twins and how identical twins come from one egg, but fraternal twins come from two eggs.
They wanted to eat breakfast afterward.
So I thought, "okay, a random conversation..."
Then my Japanese friend came along and talked about eggs and sausage, because the Japanese word for sausage 「ソーセージ」is part of the word for twins. 「にらんせいそうせいじ」 or 「いちらんせいそうせいじ」Of course the egg part is pretty obvious.
What?
So I didn't get how an American audience would hope to understand it. Especially if the punchlines are delivered in explanatory subtitles. Can you imagine that? What if you were watching Chappelle's show and there's a subtitle explaining how Grape Juice differs from Grape Drink?
So yeah. The writing might be good but the fact that the humor was above and beyond what Americans should understand... that kinda puts it on the list for "only nerds would like this show."

That's one joke out of many. Obviously I didn't understand japanese linguistic puns but plenty of the shows humor punched through.
