After hearing the announcement of Dragon Age 2, I decided to go back and try out modding one last time. I present you:

INTRODUCTION
Unarmed Combat has always been one of my favorite aspects of fantasy style RPGs. Throughout Neverwinter Nights/expansions and Neverwinter Nights 2/Expansions, Playing as a monk and ripping into the enemies with my bare hands was one of the highlights of my playing experience.



Unfortunately, in the current combat system of Dragon Age, fighting unarmed is highly discouraged. Each voiceset has a specific complaint whenever you try to fight without a weapon, and even the in-game hint states that you should never enter combat with a weapon.



This lack of a viable unarmed combat option has always bothered me as I played Dragon Age. So, I modded the game itself to make unarmed combat a viable alternative!

The semantics of pure unarmed combat is buried in the many core scripts, and editing the combat script itself would cause so much trouble wit compatibility. So, I have taken the opposite approach. This also makes sure that only you, the hero, has access to the unarmed combat mastery, and other enemies who try to fight you unarmed are still stuck in the regular ineffective combat.




FEATURES

1. Viable unarmed combat! Your rigorous training allows you to hit ~6 times a second with your bare hands, up to 10 times a second with Haste! Just think of the possibilities of this with poisons/buffs like rally etc.

2. Your mastery of the natural forces allow you to channel the chi energy with every hit to destroy the enemy's very soul! Every hit:

-Interrupts spellcasting
-has a chance to Knockback
-has a chance to Stun
-has a chance to Paralyze
-has a chance to Slow movement speed



3. Your preternatural awareness allows you to see the weaknesses in even the thickest, most powerful armors. Every unarmed hit penetrates any and all armor the enemy wears.

4. Damage scales with both STR and DEX! 0.25 damage per point in each. (50 DEX/50 STR will give you about 90 DPS, before any other additions)

5. Innovative Toggle system! You can go back, if you wish, to regular combat simply by equipping the items in your inventory.

6.Separation of armed/unarmed combat - the attack speed/hit effects do not carry over if you change your mind and try to fight with a weapon. Same goes with a shield. However, the defense will still stack.

7. Training Exclusivity - Only you/your party can become a martial arts master. Any other enemy/NPC that tries to fight unarmed will only go through the regular ineffective unarmed attack, not the altered attack.


I recommend the use of rogue with this unarmed combat. You can add poisons, and backstab damage will stack with each hit.

Although you can still fight like this with a mage, your damage will not scale at all.

You can't use any of the weapon talents with this style of combat.

Seems rather... tedious after a while, with a lot of passive procs and other things. Obviously it's difficult to add actual abilities but perhaps things like a aoe knockdown or other skills already implemented could be edited? Other than that, great work! ^^

You're right, it might get kinda tedious >.<


I have a few ideas of adding actual abilities. They include:
Chi Strike - simple added damage to next attack
Blink - teleports you forward a short distance
Chi Pull - similar to revenant's mass pull, except at a smaller, targetable AOE
Chi Fortitude - immunity to all movement impairing effects (stun/paralysis/others)


Coding this is not that difficult - but I can't stop just with adding one or two abilities. If I want to create an entire monk class with their own abilities, I have to add skilltrees, add triggers such as only giving the unarmed mastery "fist weapon" to learned characters, add descriptions, add extensions etc etc...


I don't know if I want to do that :p

Wait, I watched the video, and i just looks like a girl rapidly headbutting the enemies :X Did I miss anything, or is that the only animation?

Edit: well, it looks more like a constant double-punch, but but it still seems somewhat boring/repetitive. HOWEVER, I've never played Dragon Age (but I know that it's supposed to be really awesome and fun), so what do I know? The funky animation was just an observation hehe

Yeah :/ If you speed up the animation, only the "striking" part is sped up. The "ready" part - the part where her hands are in the ready position - is not sped up as much. As a result, the punching animation only works at low speeds. Once the animation is sped up, if you don't pay attention, it seems like she's just standing still and the opponent is getting hit.

I'm afraid that is out of my control Bioware hasn't released their proprietary combat animation editor. Their toolset only allows editing of cutscene animation, not combat animation. I can't change that :/


Try to look at the video in HD - it should look slightly better? I hope...
