Can people stop saying this? I mean, mikeymoo lives in Edmonton, Chill lives in Calgary, a neighbouring city and they have already told people that the $400 is not close to rent. Especially for the type of house kcaz lives in. That $400 includes food, water, electricity, heat, it's not a lot of money. I also lived in Calgary and I was paying $400 rent myself living with my parents while I was working and it was totally reasonable.

It depends how big the interruptions + chores are killing your productivity (or whatever), and if thats worth the extra money to you. It sounds like you are OK financially to do either one, it'll depend on your priorities.

Do what is practical and makes sense. Never move out on emotional feelings. Make sure you have enough money saved up as well.

Food: depends on what you like, if you are pretty much trying to eat what you want it wouldn't cost you more than 100$/week, unless you fancy caviar with champagne like mikeymoo does. 100$ allows you to cook at home plus eat out occasionally. I mean, if you eat out 7 days a week (or do takeouts) it's only ~80$, you still have 80$ a month to stock on rice, raisin bran, milk, water, etc. But why would you not cook for yourself, it's definitely cheaper. Rent: you can always find a place at around 500-550$/mo with at least something included (like electricity or cable), either rent a room or find a roommate. Living with a roommate(-s) is an important experience that everyone should have. You don't need your own apartment just yet. Utilities: no more than 250$/mo. If you luck out with the place/try to not have every gadget on at all times it will be less, around 200$. Phone and insurance: 110-120$$? Furniture: a mattress, a table and a chair, craiglist it or borrow somewhere. Well, I guess you can just buy it at the store if you really want to. You should be able to manage around 1000-1100$/mo, you have about 700$ left for toilet paper, shampoo, toothpaste, tanning lotion, condoms and cool shirts. Worth a try, one thing you have to know - your life will spin out of control if you let yourself go because no one will be around to spank you. Just try to do your chores on time, cleaning up once in 2 weeks is plenty.
