Since February, mid-feb around the 15th tingling in my right hand, specifically index finger started showing. As a result of trying to deal with the pain tingling i tried limiting playing SC BW at that time and having less time on the PC. However, I started also dealing with the occasional forearm, elbow and shoulder pain + comfortableness. I went to a doctor which said I have tennis elbow on my right hand and a minor case of carpal tunnel. He also did blood tests etc, to rule out arthritis etc. and it turns out everything was normal .Thus I revised my posture, stopped SC completely but still had around 1-3hours of normal browsing chating etc computer use.
My condition did Improve, and I reached a state where pain was very limited. And as a mindless person I started playing 6 or more hours a day of continuous PS3 gaming. Symptoms started to occur in both hands this time, and I realized I was dealing with a mixture of Repetitive strain injuries. Just recently I limited my PC time to an hour, stopped my PS3 gaming aiming for at least a month break, and started using stretches and breaks different times a day. My condition is currently still a bit painful, thankfully though I dont have any pain while sleeping, it usually occurs afternoon and dies out early night.
Does anyone have any advice or whatnot on dealing with RSI? What should I do to coap with pain until I kill it completely? Any success stories to boost my morale? In addition my current setup is this Keyboard:
Ultra-slim logitech.
Mouse v150 logitech:
Though I am thinking both of those are not very friendly to my hands seeing the logitech keyboard's buttons are so cramped together and I think the mouse I am using is too small for my hands?
If you can recommend anything please let me know!
I hope I can fully heal before end of the year so I can go back to SC =[!

I think a gel pad and the right table height could do alot. My table is at such uncomfortable height it´s painful :S
I don´t think the mouse size matters that much if you hold it the " RTS-playah" way I guess

I don't know anything about RSI, but is your desk height appropriate? If it's too or low this can put stress on your wrists so altering the height at which you use your mouse / keyboard can help a lot (at least it took away much of my pain after hardcore osu sessions).
Another thing you could try doing to alleviate wrist pain is try moving your entire arm some instead of relying completely on your wrist (which looks like what you do from that mouse picture). This will make your arm very tired initially, but it limits the amount of wrist movement that occurs.

you should definitely aim to strengthen the place where the pain is
this could be hard to do as you dont want to do anything too similar to what you're doing that's causing the pain
but stretching it aloooot and you know heat stuff on it and what not, plus strengthening all the muscles involved, your whole arm, shoulder, even fingers and wrist! can really help out in preventing further injuries
it might be important to ask a professional on the best way to go about this so you dont hurt yourself, but anytime ive had symptoms like this developing this has worked for me
not as a joke or anything, but if you like masturbate with the same hand that you use to use the mouse etc, you might wanna consider switching it up lol, because that's probably the most stressful repeated movement you can do to that area of your body
|
Should definitely invest in a mousepad with a gel/foam pad.
I've been using this for over 3 years now: http://us.kensington.com/html/13161.html
Also you should read up about ergonomics for proper chair height, arm angles, etc. for prolonged computer usage.

This isn't the usual topic to make people say "use the search function," but...yeah, it would have worked in your case ^^; http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=134466 This post that has some tips to deal with RSI and i found the wrist stretch to be the most helpful for me in easing the pain. hf gl, hopefully you'll be able to play games pain free again soon!

Hey, I have similar issues (started around 8 months ago :< ) Started with pain/tingling/weakness/numbness in my left hand (sc keyboard hand). I stopped starcraft and waited for it to go away and instead my right hand started hurting as well. I saw a neurologist about it and got tested negative for carpal tunnel so didn't really know what to do. So I said fuck it it'll go away eventually if I stop gaming, so I quit all computer gaming pretty much (continued playing super smash bros).
So anyways, pain and weakness never went away and now I can't play smash bros anymore either even though its with a controller... My hands just feel really sore and weak all the time (also I occasionally have elbow pain), and if I try to push through it they start to tingle and feel realllllly weak so I stop. I'm seeing a hand specialist orthopedist in 2 days wish me luck :X I really hope something can be done as I really wanna buy sc2 but its just not worth it if I can't play it. I'm a computer science major too so this kinda really sucks for coding :< So I guess my advice is if it hasn't gotten really bad yet don't push it and just rest? I've tried stretches but they haven't helped I dunno...
EDIT: Also all three of my knucles/joints in each finger crack a lot along with my wrist. The middle of my hand seems to pop too when its really bad. Fuck RSI -____-

God damn I got this and it sucks. Good luck, and stretch the pain out along with deep tissue massages by yourself or from anyone who cares.

Yeah thats sort of similar, it began with my right hand, then it turned to my left. I basically think we need to work on strengthening the muscles. Stopping all activity is not that productive, I think minimizing it, with continuous rest and excersise and stretching will show progress. BTW the more you feel you are weak the more it will seem like it, dont let it get to you that your hands are dead, believe it or not thinking you are weak all the time makes your brain imagine allot of shit.
|
There is probably something to your comment about not dwelling on weakness. I've noticed when I drink I can play through pain easier but when I blaze I tend to get fixated on hand and make it feel worse. Its just so hard not to be bitter about it, knowing my brain may be sabotaging me doesn't help me change it unfortunately. Its like "dont think about a pink elephant".

I donno about tennis elbow, but i started to develop carpel tunnel symptoms a few years ago, and a friend recommended I use something like this: http://www.aiyafitness.com/pics-inv-other/hand_exerciser_hand-grip.jpg Pretty much immediately after using it, I felt so muhc better, and over time my condition improved while i continued to play sc.
Overall, the most important things in curing/avoiding rsi are good posture, strength, stretching, and drinking water.

I had cramps in my right hand related to attempting to grip too hard with my 4th and 5th fingers and pain all around my left keyboard hand after months of SC / coding. I switched to a very large mouse (behemoth ocz) which removed the pain in my right hand since it has large support grooves for the 4th and 5th fingers. I also recommend getting a foam or cloth support for your wrist on the keyboard.
Eventually though the only thing that solved my RSI was to quit gaming for hours in a row. It wasn't worth having the pain in my wrists since I program for a living, not to mention future medical bills. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but I couldn't keep good posture while gaming since I'd get really focused. After a few months of not playing SC, most of the pain went away.
Good luck, don't treat it lightly.

Good luck, don't treat it lightly. Yeah I was planning on that, I honestly would gladly do anything for a full recovery. Do you have any advice on how much normal computer use a day 1 hour or less?
