Some of you guys may or may not know that video games can cause motion sickness...Believe ir ot not...

Please read on if you are interested on how it affected me....

The only few times I would ever get motion sickness is on a boat, or on a crazy roller coaster ride. I have never had a problem with this consistently until I started to play Half Life 2 for the first time. It was quite unusual that it happened; Half Life 2 felt like any ordinary FPS games that I played that are just like it(Counter strike 1.6 and Source). During the first play around for about an hour, my eyes started to hurt, my body temperature started to rise, and a serious headache started to kick in. Being as naive as I was, I didn't even think it was the game causing it, and it was just me having a bad day of some sort...

However, after a few more playthoughs, I started to pick it up again! I started to finally believe it was the game causng this, because I am pretty healthy and never had this problem at all. I did some research and found out that alot of people were having it...talk about being late in knowing things...

http://www.warp2search.net/news/story/half_life_2_is_making_me_sick_literally.html

I'm getting quite bad nausea, cold sweats, headaches, and a feeling in my stomach that makes me want to be sick. This is exactly the same feeling I have got on an extremely rough boat ride. Once I have these symptoms, it takes me a few hours to feel better again once stopped playing.

I was quite suprised when I heard this. I've played games with gameplay that just boggles the mind, yet simple gameplay of a hovercraft shaking up and down just made my head go bonkers like I was actually on it!

Well, I eventually found out that the game had a different field of vision compared to other FPS games.

Taken from the same article...

Some gamers are starting to believe that the POV (Point Of View), which is the field of vision displayed on the screen, is the culprit. CS:Source's POV is set at 90, whilst HL2 runs at 75. Humans have a field of view of approx. 180 (degrees). This means that running around playing HL2 is like running around with tunnel vision.

Everytime I play the game, I have to alter the field of vision to 90 degrees now.

Anyways, I just wanted to let you guys know about this if you didnt know already. Also, if you ever had a similar problem, let me know...so I can stay away from those game...lol

Yeah, I have this with pretty much any game that has mouse acceleration. Or even just watching a mouse move around that has mouse acceleration on. I get a huge headache from after like 10-20 minutes of gameplay. Made it impossible for me to play Fallout 3. Interestingly enough I'm totally fine with games like CS or Gunz where the screen panning is instantaneous, but anything that has that sort of nausea-inducing acceleration is bleaegh.

I've never had motion sickness of any kind as well, I wonder what makes people predisposed to it.

Doesn't happen to me but I have a friend who gets motion sickness from half the games I introduce him to. So we're stuck with playing Counter-Strike 1.6 and Brood War. (Not a bad thing, by any means.)

Thats funny, I thought it was only me, but when I first picked up half life two, I stopped right after I got off the boat at the dock near the beginning of the story because I just wasl ike, short of breath, a little bit nauseated.

First four hours I played HL2 I didnt get motion sickness, but as soon as I did, I couldnt play more then 10 mins without feeling sick.

THe game was purposely designed to give you tunnel vision, so after I changed the view, I could play it for long periods of time.

One of my friends cousins who came from Iraq and just signed up for a third tour couldnt play CoD MW for more then 10 mins because it looked too life like for him and he would get motion sickness.

Yeah, I also feel sick playing games with low FOV, or motion blur / other disorientating visual effects. I don't think it's quite motion sickness, but headaches and general malaise enough to make me stop playing.

I think it really sucks that lots of newer games have really low FOV, combined with retarded visual effects (red jam all over your fucking screen comes to mind), that are either very difficult or impossible to turn off .

It creeped me out when it talked about pov.

People who play hl all the time are running around in tunnel vision shooting people.

That can't be good.

I have never even heard of anyone experiencing something like this. I've played a lot of video games that involve water and I've never had any sort of problem with it.

But sometimes if I'm about to make some sort of crazy jump or do a risky strategy in a game my muscles tighten and my buttcheeks contract in anticipation. It's kinda funny actually.

old news but affects many people. i get sick whenever playing any sort of FP game and it's gotten worse as i've gotten older i think. i remember how sick to my stomach i felt after a long play of half life 1 and 2 or halo as a kid. half life 1 was horrible as i could only play like 15 minutes before feeling gross. pretty much gave up on those games and play only sc, fighters and sports games. i heard mirror's edge is supposed to make you sick though.

Ive only adjusted FOV for angle perception and the distance of objects on my screen. And why is it called POV when its usually referred to "Field of Vision".
