So, I've never had much experience with this before ... I have been applying to some jobs, and I have a phone interview for this fellowship position at a NGO (US PIRG) ... Does anyone have any tips on how to prepare for a job interview?

Some things I figure I should do... some research on issues I'll probably be working on.

Aside from that, what else should I make sure I know so I don't sound like a tardfuck next week?

Do a mock interview with a friend and get feedback. Just do that over and over. Also, have a clear case laid out in your mind about why you should be chosen for the job over someone else.

If its a phone interview, wear a suit and sit in a proper chair. I've seen people who just wear regular clothes and slouch in a couch to do phone interviews and their tone of voice as well as their energy level reflects that they didnt take the interview seriously. it sounds stupid to do all that for a phone interview, but it helps.

From my experience you'll always get 2 or 3 of the really gay questions that go something like:
"What is your strength / weakness'
"Give me an example of a time uve had a problem and how you resolved it"
"Give an example of when a friend or coworker was a problem and how you resolved it". You basically just have to go Gandhi on their ass.
Morrow on ZvP: "I'm not very confident in general vs Protoss because of the imbalance (Yes its imbalanced, get over it)."

I just had an interview for a promotion and one of the panel asked me "If you're a cactus, why?" I was a little satisfied with my answer though. When I got home I searched in google and apparently that question has been asked around some but all the answers were crappy so I wonder what you guys think would be a good answer to that?

Also I hate the "How much should we pay you?" question.

Use the right dressing code, don't look like a slacker with pearcings all over(unless you're applying for a pearcing job). Try to convince them why you're the man for the job, even if u dont belive it ureslf you gotta sound convincing. yet sound confident and be preaperad, try to think of common question they would ask you. Use a firm hand grip when you're greeted. Try to mix in words or sentence in your conversation involving in the companys business idea/slogans, show them that you agree in what they're doing and that you belive in thiers ideas. Don't be too obvious about it though, it could have a negative effect.
Train this with a friend might help you a bit..

And remember if they dont call you and say u got the job ask them why you didnt get it, it's very important for the future job applications. maybe there was some missing pices in your Resum'e.

hope this helped u out a bit

Yeah, definitely look up some common interview questions like these and think of a basic answer around it. But make sure to not sound like you're regurgitating a precomposed answer.

In my experience, it's better to be a little more serious than it is to relax. Of course, when the mood is right, you can joke around a bit.

With most of those sort of questions you just tell a story of an example you demonstrated the type of thing they are looking for. Previous job experience + shows you can think, etc..
Stories are also more believable.

Be prepared to answer these 3 for sure
What can you do for us?
Why are you interested in the job?
What prior relevant experience do you have?

Research the company and the position your applying for so you are prepared
Maintain good eye contact
Make sure you dress profesionally
If they ask you if you have any questions make sure you have a few you can ask about them
Do a few mock interviews with friends

Do you know who is going to be calling you? Google them, check out their linkedin, facebook, etc. Just knowing who you're talking to can help you relax a bit, maybe help you hedge the conversation towards something they will find interesting. Don't tell them you did it or sound like a cyber stalker of anything but it can help being able to visualize their face at least.

Dressing up in a suit, treating it as an in person interview is very good advice to follow if possible.

Don't practice too much unless you get really nervous, you don't want answers to sound rehearsed. However if you don't generally spend time talking on the phone call lots of other people, catch up with old friend, family, etc. Try to be aware of and eliminate bad phone habits you may have like tapping your fingers, sighing, browsing tl and only half paying attention, etc.

Make sure phone is fully charged and you'll be able to speak freely with no background noise.

Take notes during the interview with pen and paper, no keys clacking.

Research the company, industry, relevant current events and have a long list of questions ready. Many of them may get answered during the normal course of the interview, cross them off as you go. Pretty much every phone interview will have "So, do you have any questions for me?" asked near the end. Having no questions to ask is very bad. Ask the best question, and after they answer ask if they have time for more. Don't make them feel pressed for time or hurried, but you gotta have questions. Show you understand how valueable their time is.

Get their contact info if you don't have it already, send a thank you next morning.
It's supposed to be automatic but actually you have to press this button.

Have an answer for "What is your biggest weakness?" That shows you know how to handle your own problems.

For example "I sometimes have trouble keeping track of all the little things I have to do throughout the day. So I started keeping a notepad and writing down all the things I need to do as they come up, then throughout the day I check my notepad to make sure I'm getting everything done."

be relaxed and professional at the same time, stay calm, but talk with a sturdy tone. as mentioned practice on ventrilo, record yourself, to a mirror, or both.

be prepared for questions you dont except. I know this is a tough one, but seriously, its nothing as depressing as asking "whats your greatest weakness" and watch the guy stumble and fall trying to make something up.

if its a "big company" u should probably also read a lot into the bridge meyers personality test, to put yourself in a good spot. Keep in mind that this is basically lying to those who are interviewing you....

Keep it simple. Don't lie, don't misrepresent yourself or your abilities. If you don't know the answer that's OK (unless it's an easy question, then you're fucked), but at least lay out your decision-making process and the resources you would draw upon to arrive at an answer.
