Notes: I'm bored (it's Wednesday) So if you're bored too then please share with me what the geekiest thing you're interested/involved in is.
For myself it's 'Tokusatsu' (part of the reason I retired from full-time coverage was to devote more time to this.)
There's more information about my hobby underneath the spoiler :D
+ Show Spoiler +Wikipedia definition of Tokusatsu; Tokusatsu (特撮) is a Japanese term that applies to any live-action film or television drama that usually features superheroes and makes considerable use of special effects (tokusatsu literally translates as "special filming" in Japanese). 'Tokusatsu entertainment often deals with science fiction, fantasy or horror, but movies and television shows in other genres can sometimes count as tokusatsu as well. The most popular types of tokusatsu include kaiju monster movies (the Godzilla and Gamera film series), superhero TV serials (the Kamen Rider and Metal Hero Series), and mecha dramas (Giant Robo). Some tokusatsu television programs combine several of these subgenres (the Ultraman and Super Sentai series). Tokusatsu is one of the most popular forms of Japanese entertainment, but most tokusatsu movies and television programs are not widely known outside Asia.' (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokusatsu.)As it stands I've seen; (plus most movies, specials, CMs and Extra episodes.) Kamen Rider:The more plot-heavy, 'adult' series out of the two which is marketed more towards adult fans and collectors of the merchandising due to it's complicated themes and emphasis on character development. Kamen Rider Kuuga. Kamen Rider Blade. Kamen Rider Kiva. Kamen Rider 555. Kamen Rider Kabuto. Kamen Rider Decade. Kamen Rider Den-O. Kamen Rider Double. Super Sentai:Basically, what the 'Power Rangers' franchise was based upon. It's more aimed at kids and families - there are a lot of merchandising elements, but there is still plot and character development. It's just that no one dies in these series (usually) and it's far less dark. Dekaranger. (not finished.) Magiranger. (not finished.) Engine Sentai Go-onger. Samurai Sentai Shinkenger. Tensou Sentai Goseiger. Misc Related Series:Ultraman Mebius. Ultra Galaxy Mega Monster Battle. Tomica Rescue Force. Tomica Rescue Fire. Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Live Action. Armor Heroes (Chinese take on Kamen Rider.) I was attracted to Tokusatsu from my childhood love of Power Rangers. I am also a big Asian drama/cinema fan (I studied it at University too.) The whole Gunpla/Mech thing doesn't really interest me, but masked heroes are a different story entirely. Before anyone asks - there is a quite large and very active Tokusatsu community for foreign fans. Most of us are between 15-30....and yes, I do buy the toys.

Well, either watching pro league starcraft or if I'm really bored and just want to lay down and relax sometimes I'll listen to people play role playing games in .mp3 format
|
I guess it would currently be pro BW.
As for things that I want to start doing again that I haven't had time for since I started college, that would be Warhammer 40,000 (tabletop) and D&D.
|
playing sc at school when i shouda been listening to commerce

Super Sentai is pretty awesome, it's sad how much they dumb it down when they turn it into power rangers for united states consumptions . It's pretty dramatic and compelling stuff in the original form, people actually die o_O
Oh, as for me, I definitely have to go with "writing for a pro-gaming website."
|
probably my psychiatry studying atm, followed closely by starcraft/video games. i'm currently trying to learn how to read body language and do clinical hypnosis, and i'm always practicing on my friends and the kids at the camp i work at (i made a game where i have to guess whether you're lying or telling the truth, they like it). it freaks some people out, but whateves.
many years ago, i also used to collect stamps too for some reason, if we want to be cliche about geeky hobbies.
|
|
Learning stuff for fun.... watching MIT / Yale / Harvard lectures on various topics.
|
|
Watching pro BW is probably my geekiest hobby. I kinda stopped playing once Summer began because I felt that I needed to devote more time to guitar/studying foreign languages (my cool hobbies). I might eventually end up buying SC2, but as it is right now, BW is just too exciting to stop watching.
|
i think the biggest thing for me, and most others here will the starcraft itself. simply because of the sheer stigma that goes with following the professional scene of a video game thats played in a different country. im not remotely embarrassed by it and love it to death. but i gotta admit its geeky as hell
|
collect MTG cards still when i have the chance at a bargain.
|
Watching documentaries and reading the Inquirer? Im a total geek... Only thing missing is an addiction to anime.
Video games isnt considered as a "geeky" hobby anymore IMO.
edit: Ohhh reading war books and other biographies.
|
used to be pokemon, now its just bw :D
or maybe reading fantasy novels? donno if this counts as geeky

does watching k-pop count as more geeky as sc.
|
my geekiest hobby was playing MUDS in junior high
|
Besides the obvious starcraft, I play around a lot with 3ds max and have been trying to learn C++. Also I've read 4 of the Starcraft books
|
Following professional Starcraft... or reading comic books for fun.
I'm a grown man, by the way.
|
Watching pro Starcraft games, religiously. There are probably other things, but I just can't think of them. Probably something about anime/kdramas though.
|
Playing and judging MTG, and my intense love affair with star trek: the next generation
|
Would probably have to be posting on forums like TL.
|
My entire life is a geeks life, Starcraft, Table top RPGs, Startrek, X-men, Anime, you name it. But unlike the stereotypical geek, I also exercise allot and maintain good hygiene.

I used to work in two comic shops so I'm actually a really big comics fan too. I'd read mainly Marvel, but I did venture in to DC for certain Batman graphic novels. I also read a lot of more indies titles like Walking Dead, 30 Days of Night etc.
|
Umm, roleplaying irl. <_<
|
def. starcraft lol but its okaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
FYI: actually now that i think about it i sometimes play magic a lil form time to time lol
|
I'm not sure if these are considered geeky these days but: video games, comics/anime, math jokes/humour(a bit).
As for the geekiest.. idk I guess following esports, mma or writing comic ideas haha.

I played Vampire: The Masquerade once >.> But never Magic.

Reading manga and playing Starcraft. I might cosplay this year (as Scar from FMA)...must learn to sew together a costume.
|
|
Definitely following pro BW. But there was one week that I spent learning about competitive Pokemon.
|
Painting and playing in tournaments with Warhammer fantasy miniatures and watching battle reports on youtube; playing TL's fantasy starcraft is a close second.
|
Playing and watching Starcraft. Also keep a healthy dose of MTG on the side, having quit from hardcore MTG a couple years ago.
|
I have always liked anime. In recent years, due to less time to watch, I got more into collecting.
PVC figures became my main collectible. If I really like a series, I look for promo posters of TV/DVD/CD releases, or the Japanese DVD/Blurays. Japanese are pretty good at making nice packaging =) I have also had my phases of Laserdiscs and shitajiki,
My latest trophy is a Yui Horie autograph on the promo poster of Bakemonogatari volume 5. Too bad I couldn't find the Fate stay/night volume 2 poster for Yuu Asakawa.

Nerdiest hobbies, hmm. Would have to say reading and learning. Those two by far.
The local library is a brisk five minute walk from where I live. It's only $5 to sign up (which pays for your card) and the only things you'll ever be charged for are overdues, using the music recording room and brand new or expensive books/materials. That may change in the future but at the moment everything's rosy.
I spend the majority of my time in the sci-fi fantasy and DIY sections of the library.
The thing I love the most about sci-fi fantasy is immersing myself in the rich fictional worlds and becoming absorbed with the characters and situations they encounter. As well as getting lost in the bliss of the written word as a reader, I'm inspired as a writer to breathe life into my own ideas, characters, plotlines and yet-to-be-born worlds. Reading great fiction inspires me to write great fiction and fans the flames of creativity.
As for DIY...I had huge learning difficulties growing up so I guess maybe that's why I enjoy mastering something new. I like to learn for the sake of learning itself because it makes me feel happy. I've done everything from beginner's pottery to amateur carpentry to baking for kids (and I've just started on Japanese too). As long as my eyes continue to hold up on me and my brain keeps ticking, I'll find something new to learn.

The rare ones(clear editions/different color editions/gold/platinum) are ridiculously expensive.
I only collect the small ones which are cheaper to collect than the bigger models. Average one costs about 7-10 bucks with shipping included. Rare ones go up as high as 100-200 bucks.

Thanks - I've gone from 4/73 down to like 4.66 in less than a day. Someone clearly has some kind of pathetic grudge and too much time on their hands.

I don't think its a personal thing, people go around 1 star'ing every blog on the front page...I've seen long blogs get rated 1 less than a minute after they're posted D:.

Awwww, NeverGG, you got me there... I am (I was?) a huge toku & sentai fan. Well, I'm not following the fandom anymore, cause of all those Korean things (you know, kpop, progamers, dramas, etc.), but I still love Kamen Rider franchise (it's too precious for me not to for some reason ;D).
+ Show Spoiler +By any chance, do you post in Henshin Justice or tokusatu lj? ^^;; Also, can I ask you which Kamen Rider series is your favorite. I love Den-O and Kabuto, lol. I also love GARO, no.. I freaking love GARO <333
As for the geekiest hobby, I think I always was (am) a geek, from head to toe.. first I started with videogames (all those emulator japanese rpg games, lol), then anime/manga/visual novels crap, then seiyuus, and then came toku and sentai stuff (alongside live-action musicals and stages in which tokus actors starring lol). I also experienced some japanese Harajuku style,'cause I love street clothing, but gosh, this was sooo expensive, so I had to stop XD ... and here I go again, following SC scene... (though I never liked the game, when it came, I just didn't like RTS). Look at me now.. not only following pros, but also trying to play... well, now I find it extremely cute, lol...

I collect Star Wars, Marvel, and DC action figures and Gundam models. Besides that, progaming such as StarCraft and fighting games.

I forgot Garo. Damn that series was excellent despite the dodgy FX. I love anything out of Japan with a Gothic horror edge to it. Also Fujita Ray is one of my favorite random drama actors. I don't usually hang out at the communities, but I dl all my stuff from TV Nihon :D
My favorites so far are Kabuto and Double for KR and Shinkenger and Go-Onger for sentai. I tried so hard to watch Ryukendo, but it's so awful :/

nothing imho. But people who don't understand will claim computer gaming and mtg. (true stereotype ftw)

Airbrushing gundams. I put way too much effort into these things but not as much as others. I've also recently started to make lightsabers(yes light up with sounds and kaiburr gems and whatnot) from everyday materials lol.

The first thing people notice when they walk into my room are all the nerf blasters hanging from the wall. I modify them, paint them, and use them in an on-campus 'nerf tag' game simulating a zombie apocalypse. I helped found the organization that runs the campus game and it has since spawned a cult-like following. It's essentially a giant larp...
I'm constantly looking for both the most awesome and the most beautiful film and videogame scores out there. I also listen to a lot of new age music, so when people hear my selection they're confused since I listen to a lot of music without words, yet still find the same amount of meaning.
And then they hear that I don't watch watch sports, but professional Korean Starcraft and practice the game on a daily basis. Whenever I say I play a lot of starcraft one of the first questions friends ask is 'aww man, me too! do you use hotkeys? can you beat the computer?'. It's hard to explain that I'm D+ on iccup, so I'll usually just play a few games and murder them! One time a did a 4 player free for all and was hit with about 50 lings at 7 minutes and then mass carriers at 20. It's fun when it essentially becomes a 3:1 and you still win! It's also fun to see the looks on people's faces when they see my 130ish APM at work!

Programing in fortran differents problem i've encountered during my studies. And once i've finished a program, making it bigger and more complex so it can solve more problems.
More specificaly i am writing a program i want to be able to solve a vast array of thermal/mecanic/ fluid mecanic problems using finite differences. And later finite elements if i find enough courage.
I guess it is pretty stupid/useless since there are a lot of professional softwares able to do that which are way more efficient than anything i could write but it's fun and relaxing.

Depends on what you view as "nerdy". From the perspective of "normal" people, everything I do in my spare time is rather "nerdy". Play video games, read, watch anime, writing on a play-by-post RPG, listen to video game music...
I suppose watching Gundam would be about the most "nerdy" thing I am doing right now. Afterall, science fiction is still seen as purely a domain of "nerds" compared to video games, who are now a lot more widespread.

Moderating TL I suppose. I program stuff for fun from time to time but I wouldn't consider that a hobby.

porn & masturbation
Seriously. I watch porn movies every day (I masturbate at least once every day, too. Sometimes twice). And I love it. Wouldn't it be socially awkward, I'd talk about porn with all of my buddies. "Ey Dude, you know who is hot? Annetta Keys, damn I'd love to fuck her. Go check out 4tube.com, there is a vid where she is sitting on a stair.. " "Oh you mean that with the purple dildo" "Yeah exactly, damn so hot"
But no. I can't talk about it. I mean, for me porn is not only random people fucking. After watching so many dicks being plugged into so many pussies, a man fucking a woman with his random 8 inch cock has become more or less an animalistic(?) act which amuses me. Of course it can and still does turn me on, but not so much like it did a few years ago. When I watch a porn movie today, I look at all kinds of different things like the ambience, if one can see the scars from her boob job.....
I used to collect a lot of porn, too. A quick look at my explorer tells i have 26GB of porn movies & pics which I of course never watch because there is too much new shit being uploaded every day. And I can't wank that much.
So yeah, now you know it. Other than that I think I'm quite boring. No strange manga/hentai/weird asian fashion fetish here

Er... I'm quite a normal guy. I'd have to say watching Korean progamers is as geeky as it can get, for me. (well, I code and make websites for a living so that's not just a hobby for me. But of course, coding is one of the geekiest jobs out there, or hobby if you don't make money out of coding, yet)

too crave for playing MagicTG the next day when store opens after 8h this day.

Magic: The Gathering. It just gets a horrible reputation when you go to a Friday Night Magic in a shitty store filled with fat, middle-aged people. I try to avoid telling friends about it.

You can DL decent enough HK subs from Veoh. Just install their Veoh player for free and look up Kamen Rider Kuuga. They suck compared to TV Nihon's, but they're better than nothing. I need to finish Dekaranger, but I keep getting distracted by bitching over how lame Goseiger is.

It's either in high school when i saw we had a DnD club and went that is a cool idea, or the part where i joined the DnD club then stopped going to my cross-country after school that or the part where we had an idea to go about LARP in the park.
I find my obsessive MTG and joining the MTG club in school not nearly as bad.

For me, that would probably be modding. That kind of thing gets you into all kinds of geeky stuff. Voice acting, 3d modeling, scripting, writing, the finer points of game design and balance...
Don't confuse mapping with modding. You can't begin to put the kind of stuff you use in a mod into a map. Arbitrary size limits and all.
