Recently my computer had been shutting down very often. Once or twice a day, usually during "intense" work (SC2 + 10+ programs running). Considering my specs, it should run perfectly fine, but it didn't. My computer would just shut down randomly all of a sudden, my whole computer went whacky.
But tonight was the final straw. My comp shut down thrice in a short frame of 25 minutes - once while processing photos on Lightroom 2, once while browsing Facebook and last while editing a photo on Nero PhotoViewer. Fuck this shit, I told myself. I think it's about time I cleaned my fan.
So, off went my power, earthed the CPU box and took out the CPU box from the corner of my room.
Holy shit.
It was a huge pile of dust. It had 4 fans, one at each side, one at the back and one at the bottom. Only one side was clean (because it was the only one facing "outside"), the rest were being blocked by 1) the desk, 2) the wall and 3) the floor.
Just took me 2 hours to clean this piece of crap, and the end results?
![[image loading]](http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/9976/img6396f.jpg) A cleaned CPU box and.. what's that? ![[image loading]](http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/4344/img6397df.jpg) All the dust =/ ![[image loading]](http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/4453/img6398e.jpg) D:
my comp runs like 500% faster now holy crap. No joke.
So, TL. Have you cleaned your computer today?

My laptop kept overheating whenever I played SC2 for longer than 20 minutes and I was reduced to putting an ice tray beneath my computer. Then my friend told me how silly I was and that I should try cleaning it. To my surprise my video card's fan was caked in dust. After cleaning it, all is well (almost).

bought this swiss-made gel thingy called cyberclean that you use to clean between the keyboards and mice, trapping all the dirt and nasty stuff. i then clean the surface with an antibacterial cleaner afterwards.

some tips while cleaning:
- ALWAYS earth your CPU before proceeding to clean it, even if you've already plugged out the power. - use a toothpick to slowly dig out chunks of dirt from the fans. the dirt trapped there is EXTREMELY hard to clean out. - use a SLIGHTLY damp cloth to clean the blades (and between them) of the fans. - some light tapping helps to shake off the dust. - if all fails, use a blu-tak to stick all the dust.

My Laptop is shutting down all the time now, whenever I start a computer game and sometimes when I just browse the web (while watching a stream or sth)
My solution was to move to the basement, since it was most likely just caused by the ridiculous temperature in germany right now, hopefully it'll be fine now

Im not sure about singapore, but in Canada you can buy pressurized air in a can that sprays out really fast. Its amazing stuff for cleaning out your computer and all of the small areas that dust can collect. However, when using it on your fans, you MUST hold onto them with your hand, and not allow them to spin when the air blows out. The pressure of the air will blow the fans much faster than their limits allow, and will most likely break the fan. I learnt that the hard way lol.

My computer is 90% dust. Last cleaned it a few years ago. Should probably do it again some time...
|
Havn't cleaned my pc in about 2months, prolly time to do so soon. You can tell it's a bit dusty due to the fan-sound, usually it is super quiet, but now you can hear it.
|
Thankfully my new computer's case has washable air filters behind the 2 front intake fans and on the optional side panel fan mount. My old desktop when I opened it after having it for years just had balls of dust everywhere (probably because it only had an exhaust fan). Cleaning a computer probably improves performance as much if not more so that defragmenting the HDD (which is another good thing to do about every moth or so).

The problem ended up being too much dust in the fan, cpu, and heatsink. Cleaned that stuff out (there was sooo much) and now the computer works great!

ugh, motherfucking fucking fuckshit

Guess I have to unscrew my fucking laptop now or something? Or is there some other way to make my SIX months year old laptop be less of a piece of shit?
|
It's impossible to get inside my HP dv5 laptop to clean because of how the case is set up. I am pretty convinced I need to break part of the frame to get to the guts.
Discouraging because I really want to clean my laptop so it isn't hot like dickens even on power saver but I'm reduced to trying to blow out the dust through the vents.

Software wise, uninstall anything that comes with the computer or do a Clean Install. Hardware wise, if you've been using it a lot and suspect there will be a lot of dust, go for it.
It's not hard to do, remove battery, unscrew everything, when removing cover/keyboard be VERY Careful. There is not much wire length. There is connectors for the Screen/Keyboard that you can usually disconnect and remove and have easy access to everything.
Cheers!

You'd be surprised how little dust you'll get if you just put your computer on top of your desk with the intake fan pointing over the desk vs on the floor, or just raising it 3-5 inches off the ground.

My graphics card had an overheating problem 3 hours ago...
I love you.
I clean my PC of dust alot but it was hiding a fan in the front to suck in air, 3 years on and the filter for it is totally caked in brown dust not 1 particle of air could every fit thru.
So now all clean and i even got a program from another TL'r called RivaTuner, my 8800 GTX was stuck at 60% fan speed, after making some profiles ( namely one at 100% ) my card now runs at 59 degrees Celsius on high settings when watching replays.
Yay for no more black boxes spamming my screen.
Now i gotto wait to test it ingame and not just on replays.
Love you! best day this year!

OK I deinstalled some programs and lots of Steam Games (basically all the games I just bought via the steam sale)
Now I've had 3 SC2 games and it didnt crash once. Before it would crash at least in the 2nd game. Guess there's no need for me to unscrew anything yet. Makes me wonder what the point of something like a big ass 700gb (I know, some people have way way more than that) hard drive is when the computer stops working when you actually use that space.

I hear its not good to keep your case open, as it messes up the airflow (without the walls, the fans don't circulate the air well through the whole case).

What Model is it? By Model I mean the sticker on the bottom of your laptop.
This is general instructions for opening a sony. You need compressed Air, a screwdriver, and a paper clip. Remove every singly screwdriver that has an arrow pointing to it. You'll have to remove the CD drive, and the latch covering your ram (those are really easy).
Take off your keyboard by pressing the latches with a paperclip. They should be either around the function keys or the spacebars.
Then you can take off the cover.
From there use your can of compressed air to blow off the dust. Make sure you hold the fan still.
Here's how I opened mine: http://laststandb.blogspot.com/2010/07/how-to-open-sony-viao-pcg-7t1l.html but you might want to find a guide specific for your model

I would, but I have no idea how to take a laptop apart without breaking it :/

Will try, good idea as my computer was shutting down during the beta very often. Thanks for the reminder

I just did this, and a lot of crumbs/tiny pieces of whatever came out. I decided to remove a few keys to see what was causing it and when i saw how messy it was inside, my jaw nearly dropped. Thus i began my 2-hour quest to clean my keyboard of this filth. After those 2 hours, I was able to get most of what was in there out (although there are still some tiny bits left). I also took this opportunity to clean my keys while i was at it, as they looked like someone let mold grow on them. =\ My fingers hurt from removing/replacing keys, but its well worth the clean keyboard now. In fact, it looks relatively new. It probly might play better too now that most of the filth is gone. =0

Since this was pumped, I might as well... 2 year old dual-GPU cards have a habit of getting dusty... my 9800GX2 was hitting 115C after ~20 mins of SC2 = no good
Unfortunately, that invovles taking the card apart... Nintendo DS for size comparision + Show Spoiler + Front/Backplate + Show Spoiler + Some Dust (only part I took photos of... there's a lot more, trust me): + Show Spoiler + Cleaned Fan! + Show Spoiler +
It only hit the mid 70s in SC2 after this... YAY!
