Because it's traced back (more or less) to Latin, which also has noun cases. Although in Latin there are three cases (including a neutral case).
French is not the worst. I have heard that many East-European languages (Finnish and Russian?) has more than 10 cases.

french is gay/hard/discouraging, i suggest you stop learning it right now to save yourself time in the future.
edit: when i first tried to speak french to some french people they thought i was mentally retarded LOL
