Background: This summer, I had two leases. For the first half, I had a lease on a house that lasted until July 2nd. For the second, I was going to sublease a friend's apartment from July 2nd until the end.
For the sublease, another friend was going to sublease the apartment for the first half of the summer. There's a fee you have to pay to officially sublease it, so we were just going to split the cost, and when she moved out, she'd just give me the key and I'd (for all intents and purposes) "be her." this way, we'd save money. Anyway, I ended up losing the key she gave me (fuck), and had to go to the apartment main office.
So now, they know that I was originally planning on illegally subleasing from them (had to tell them which apartment I wanted a key to). They were like "ok, we'll ignore that for now, just fill out this official sublease." So I did (paid the fee again...), but they told me that I had to wait for two weeks for the paperwork to clear. This means that I couldn't move in until the 13th, so I'd have a ten day period in which I wouldn't actually have a place to stay. They specifically told me that I couldn't stay in the apartment.
Anyway, the other lessor of the apartment was planning on leaving about when I moved in. She would pretend to "forget" to hand in her key, and just give it to me, and I'd just pay for the late key fee. She did this, so I was able to move into the apartment the 3rd (illegally, of course). However, they told her that they'd change the locks between subleases.
So yeah, here I am, on the eighth, illegally sitting on this couch typing this message, hoping people don't come in and try to clean things up.
I walked back to my apartment today, and found a message on a sheet of paper in my door about some kind of apartment announcement (apparently some people are dealing drugs in this building, and they were letting people know the police were getting involved). However, I looked at ALL the other apartments in this building, and none of them had the paper in their door.
So am I too paranoid in thinking that they might be "testing" to see if anyone is living in the apartment? I replaced the paper in my doorframe as I went inside.
T_T...I've been really stressed out these couple of days haha...I keep on expecting to turn my key, only to find that it doesn't work anymore. That, or walk in and see a cleaning crew or something. I also still haven't figured out how to return the other lessor's keys to the main office, since she told the office that she simply forgot to turn in the keys and would be mailing them in or something.
Sigh. Any advice?
