Like many kids of my generation, I'd tune in religiously throughout primary and early high school to Channel Ten every night to watch The Simpsons. At some point I stopped, due to growing up of course, but also due to what I felt was the declining quality of the show. It's been years since I've seen a Simpsons episode but tonight I watched Bart After Dark after seeing that .gif of Abe Simpson walking into the burlesque house and walking right out again after seeing Bart working the door.
Friends, I had forgotten the amazingness that is classic Simpsons. In today's environment filled with overt aggression, silly gimmicks and political agendas in our cartoons, this episode reminded me of how wonderful The Simpsons really was; I found it refreshing in its simple celebration of life, and the way it injected ribald humour that was just shy of inappropriate (a lost art, I am sorry to say).

haha no you're not alone. Not always from the intro alone, but generally within the first 5 seconds or their first line it instantly comes to you what episode it will be.
Fox 8 plays Simpsons at the same time as Channel 10 so if Channel 10's episode sucks I just switch over to Fox 8 and they usually play old episodes (plus Futurama is on straight after)
It's what I tell everyone. Series 3-8 > every other comedy show ever made.
Best, most intelligent, most creative comedy ever = these three episodes:

And laugh at how comically deep they are, with a constant barrage of jokes. Guaranteed you missed 99% of the jokes the first time through. It's outrageous how many amazing jokes are crammed into these episodes, enough for another show's entire series.
Like said above the classic simpsons was some of the best stuff on tv, even If I were to watch a super old episode again now I'd still laugh at jokes I never noticed before.
My friends and I decided that the show should have ended after Season 11 because that season ends with "Behind the Laughter" which would have been a fitting end to the show. There are a few gems from Season 12, but that's still overall a sub-par season and they are all bad after that. One friend who bought DVDs of the show stopped after 11.

You're exactly right. Unfortunately I think people like us are in the minority. Virtually every episode from each of those seasons is an absolute gem, then they lost their best writers like Conan, Cohen, and Schwarzwelder. Even the characters themselves sound different, for worse in my opinion. If you listen to the DVD commentary where they have some of the voice actors helping out, they'll say themselves "wow I used to do Homer in a much lower voice".
The episodes you listed of course are classics, I'd also add Homer the Great to that list, and Lemon of Troy, King Size Homer, and The PTA Disbands.
I mean modern Simpsons is not as good as it used to be but I still think its still a very good show and especially compared to all the current junk they are playing.

i recently rediscovered the simpson's as well, i had stopped because of how bad it got. i started watching the new episodes out of a whim and for some reason they were good again. pretty awesome
