Dear Teamliquid netizens,

I have this huge problem that's killing me. Any advice or thoughts would be helpful. So here goes nothing...

I had 2 major exams on last Wednesday and Thursday. But I got the dates all messed up (BIG blunder on my part as I recalled it to be Thursday and Friday instead) so .... I ended up missing the Wednesday exam and preparing for for the WRONG EXAM on Thursday. I remember being so pissed off at myself and cursing throughout the exam.

Now, I did a little searching on google and it seems that other students have been through this before and they were allowed to sit for a deferred examination after being given permission from the professor. So, I tried doing the same but alas no success... the approval process to sit for the deferred exam is done by the faculty board of examiners on a single piece of application paper with two lines worth of explanations instead (apparently their very strict according to the administrators with this)(i'm currently in a uni in melb if that helps)

So my questions are:
would faking an illness help? even if its unaccompanied by any supporting documents? or should i just come clean? Would the dean of the faculty have any influence on the matter? (because right now I have no chance to explain myself/situation) Any ideas to help improve my odds?

TL;DR i fucked up big time and now i need good suggestions

SC2 is to BW, what coke is to wine.

Problem is, afaik, you need the medical certificate corresponding with the dates in question for the exam. Studying for the wrong exam and missing one is unfortunately on your head.

Sorry, but short of a miracle you wont be able to remedy this mistake ;_;

EDIT: what uni btw?

By exams do you mean college entrance exams or exams you take in college?
If its the latter I guess you could fake an illness... but then, the doctor's note should date to a day that's already passed... any doctor you know well?

I don't have advice for your current problem. Basically, you explain truthfully what happened to the relevant professors and ask if there's anything you can do to make up what you missed.

However, you probably won't make this mistake again! Everyone makes a major screw-up like this at some point in their life or they never truly come to understand the importance of taking school logistics seriously. I once walked into a college exam thinking it wasn't going to be until next class and hadn't studied yet :p

BTW, this also might show that you should come up with some kind of a 'system' to avoid problems like these. For example, I now use my phone's calendar for most things and make a paper schedule whenever I have an exam week or something like that to keep track of everything.

I don't have any good suggestions, but I think the better thing would be to come clean - if you were sick then you would have notified the examiners on the day of the Wednesday exam, so your story wouldn't be very credible. The medical certificate (backdated) is also a hurdle - I can usually get my doctor to backdate one day or so (by claiming I was really sick and couldn't make it in); but for any assessment situation I get a friend to haul my ass to the doc on the important day in question. Also, if I was sick I would probably have had my preparation for both exams suffer, and would have attempted to get the Thurs exam deferred on the grounds of recovery.

So, yeah, coming clean means you can't get exposed as a fraud, which would almost definitely have some very serious ramifications with a faculty-wide board (of your senior professors, no doubt). You might have to take the hit for the Thurs exam (that you sat and did badly on), but they might be gracious enough to let you sit the Wednesday exam at a deferred time.

Finishing up my Aus exams as well - one to go, tomorrow. So glad it's almost over!
Unashamedly nerdy.

Don't you just hate how universities have your whole grade dependent on one fucking final? I hope I didn't mess up on my final either man. GL to you.

I have not found that finals are 100% of your grade.

Do you mean that you hate that finals are an important part of the grade? Yeah you can make that argument but it's also difficult for Universities to avoid it except to more heavily weigh individual unit exams which isn't really better. For most classes an alternate solution makes it too easy for people to get lots of help.

Pretty much. I mean its a little ridiculous if you think how up to 50 or even 70% of your grade in a class can be dependent on making it to a single test in good condition. When professors decide to spring a quick one on you, you could potentially be in for a world of hurt just because of one test (granted I understand it is a cumulative test of your knowledge of the course.

Have a chat to your lecturer and they can give you special consideration or a supp exam. They will most likely check up on your tut attendance and assignments marks to ensure you are at least a trying student.

Beauty with Uni is that its a private institution and lecturers can pass any1 up to their own discretions.

That is a bad situation.

Basically you have to decide on a case-by-case basis. Who your professor is, how well you know him (how often did you seek advice from him), what kind of guy he is (does he play by the books or make his own rules) all changes how you should act. There really is no RIGHT answers.

For the missed exam, definitely try to salvage it. If you've been to the professor and he knows your name+face, you might want to seek him out (don't call or contact, see him face to face) and PLEAD with him (but beg like a weak fool, plead with confidence).

For the exam you took on the wrong day is more difficult since you actually took the exam (which may have or may not have been a better outcome). Most professors aren't inclined to give you mercy if you already took the exam, but non-the-less try pleading with this guy too.

Faking illness is risky since you require documented proof (doctor's note), and once you go this way there's no turning back... but if you've hardly ever spoke to this professor throughout the year and he's sort of a stickler to the rules and seems like a very hard guy to convince, going this route might be the better option.

Good luck mate

nope sadly

And thanks for the advice everybody. and Micronesia optimistic as always : ) yeah, I guess I'll come come clean... as anybody working in any education institution can smell a fraud a mile away~

i went to Melb Uni, got in a car accident on the way to an exam, they let me sit a deferred exam (like 2 months later) without much questioning, they didnt ask for any proof like that, but it was honest.

this was department of commerce, but i did have decent assignment grades (pretty much half the assessment) so there would be no reason for me to no show the exam.

hope this helps.

Go and beg the professor or who ever is in charge.

If your grades are decent and they remember you from the classes then you have a good shot.

I missed one of my first year exam because I overslept, I bribed a doc to produce a sick certificate :D and got a defer exam.

You need to say you were sick.

You have a better chance begging your doctor than begging your professor.

Uni Law says no final make up without legitimate reason. Messing up dates is not legitimate. Profs care more about their job than some random kid's grade even if they care.

So ASAP go bribe doctor.
Multiply your efforts.

I was looking into the standards set by your uni, this is what they say about deferred examinations specifically:

Deferred examinations
Deferred examinations are those examinations held when students are
unable to sit for a scheduled final exam. Such examinations may be
provided at the discretion of the Unit Co-ordinator.
In this unit, students seeking a deferred examination should lodge a request
in writing to the appropriate Unit Co-ordinator, together with any evidence
relating to their inability to attend the scheduled examination. Such a
request may be lodged up to a week after the date of the scheduled exam.
The Unit Co-ordinator may then approve the request and, if granted, will
ensure the student is advised in writing of the date, time and location of the
deferred exam at least two days in advance.
If you are unable to attend the deferred exam, you should contact the Unit
Co-ordinator to negotiate an alternative sitting. This will be arranged at the
discretion of the Unit Co-ordinator. If such arrangements are agreed to, no
further alteration will be possible, and failure to attend will result in a fail
grade for the exam.

I was under the impression it had to be done before, but yeah you had a week to submit a good excuse...

Hopefully these exams were just on the wednesday and thursday past?

Not true. At University of Toronto the instructor does not have the authority to give make-up exams. Everything has to be done through the registrar's and boy are they picky

I actually prefer that the final exam makes up a significant amount of your final grade (50-75%).
Though this is probably the case because i'm one of those kids who does shit all during the year and has terrible assignment marks.

now if you hadn't already talked to them, I would have said to pretend to be sick, even then it probably has to be within 24 hours (it does at my school). But since you did already talk to them, they'd probably be suspicious of this sickness. If you want to try, DEFINITELY have a doctor's note, just explain the sit to the doctor.
How's the weather down there?

At UofT, you can have 1 bye course though. I forgot what it's called but you're allowed to take away any 1 mark within a certain period of time as if it never existed.

That'd be nice in this case.

If it was up to your professor, I'd reccommend being honest. I've made a similiar mistake before (came in on the wrong day for an exam) and after a quick email he left me make it up the next day.

However, if you have to get board approval.... good luck man, but I doubt they will have a heart.

Here it's totally up to the registrar's office and unless you have a medical note you're completely fucked
