I am a disabled male, so my free time is all day whenever I want as long as I am not in the hospital. Because of this, I decided that I wanted to become good at something. In my mind I thought, if I can devote as much time as I want to something, there is no reason why I cant become top notch at something. I really enjoyed broodwar around 2001 while I was still in high school. I played with friends and on the galactic interweb when I could, I wasnt very good, but not terrible either. But I was a jock, and couldnt devote that much time to the game, it was just a game to me back then. I had more important things to devot my time to, like weightlifting and football. I wanted to get a college scholarship.
But in 2002 I became Ill and in pain, rushed to the ER, and found out that I have a chronic illness, my football career was over, the scouts my highschool coach had lined up to watch a game, didnt even get to see one of the players they wanted to. I gradudated high school in 2004 with decent grades, enough to be accepted into the University of Cincinnati. I went for a semister but due to haveing to go the the hospital and have surgerys and put on pain medicine, I couldn't concentrate and missed to many days. Shortly after leaveing school I got Disability benifits.
Now everyone wants to do something with thier life correct, everyone wants to be good at something, for me I knew I wouldn't be a doctor, I wouldn't be a professional football player, I wouldn't even be a normal everyday person who works. But I still think I can be good at something, and once I heard SC2 was comeing out, why not that I thought to myself.
Fast foward to when the beta comes out, I registerd to get it, but no email. I dont have that big of a income so I wasn't going to buy it on ebay for $175, So I did what alot of people did, I watch as many games as I could on youtube, I got my old BW disc out and played some of that. Although I didn't know what iCCup was and just played BGH on b.net.
Then one day I read that if you reserve you game at gamestop you will get a free beta key. Well cool, I had my reservation there for over 8 monthes at that point, I went that day and got my beta key. I downloaded it took around 4 hours to get it and the patches, and wow I was ready for my first match.
Now what race do I want, I think to myself and I had to choose my best race from BW right. Ok I choose terran, I had watched plenty of games on youtube and knew some stratagys. So I was like psssh I dont need no practice game Ill just go and do my placement matches. I choose terran, and wait for my frist game to start. Player found. He is playing protoss. Map is Scrap Station. Awesome I saw a very cool stratagy on this map for PvT I am going to do it.
The game starts and I do a split on my workers 3-3, and am feeling good. Make my depot at 10 so I dont get supply blocked and cant continue makeing workers. I get my rax, as it is going up I get my gas, and send my worker out to scout. I get to his base and see him makeing his gateway, ok I know I am not getting rushed. I pull my worker out and go to his natural, to the platform right behind it and as soon as I can I make a factory right there. Get my second gas going, and any extra minerals make a few marines. My factory is up and I have enough to make a armory, get it going and get the tech lab on the factory. Then I start my thor. While it is going I pull 7 scv's out of mineing along with all of my marines. My thor comes out and I send him in with scvs repairing him and marines right infrot drawing fire. He sees this and doesnt have much and I win my first SC2 beta game.
I continue playing my placement games and go 3-1 with my only loss to zerg. My fifth placement match is TvP on scrap station. Oh man I got this. I do the same thing as the first placement match, but I get to his base and uhh there was a imortal and another getting chrono boosted out. Hrmm my thor goes down. But not to fear I killed both of his immortals and saved 3 of my scv's and have my second on the way. I get there and bam another immortal there, but this time I dont have the marines there to help kill the immortal and not as many scv's repairing. Boom my second thor goes down, this time without even killing the one immortal. Crap what do I do now. What anyone would do I gg. I went 3-2 in my placement matches and get place in silver. I play a few more games in silver before I go to bed since it was late in the night at this point. I wake up the next day and the ladder was reset. So I get to do all my placement matches over. This time I went 3-2 again and went into silver. But now I got my hotkeys down, some basic strats and soon am promoted to gold league. My goal quickly became to make into platnium. I would play 40 so games a day, and wasnt going anywhere, I was rank 20 something in gold.
So I decide maybe terran isnt right for me and start playing random. I played ramdom for alot of games. And what did I find out? Terran was my worst race.
Im going to stop here for now and if a few people read this and enjoy I will finish part 2. And continue going. Well to be honest Ill continue going either way just so I can put my thoughts down. Anyway thanks for reading.
