Help me with my Journalism application!

So, some background on me first. I'm a tenth grader with a decent background of art (did art basically all of Middle School and got into the 10-person Masters program in 8th grade). However, stupid school restrictions forced me to abandon electives for 9th and 10th grade so I am trying to get back into art. The journalism program at my school is going to have a large number of their senior artists leaving so they are looking for potential candidates over the next week.

My portfolio has several drawings, and I also have to write an essay explaining my qualifications and what I will add to the program. The Journalism teacher is also my English teacher this year so the essay doesn't worry me; however, I want to make sure that my pictures are as perfect as possible and I know that TL has a number of great artists. Hopefully, you can help a fledgling TL artist out

The very first thing I noticed about your hand was the base (before even looking at the reference photo), the part that is supposed to connect to the wrist. Comparing the drawing to the reference and thinking about how shadows work in real life, the fact that your hand lightens up and fades away slightly disconcerts me. Also, looking at the reference the eraser caught my eye--I enjoyed the little bits of lead infused with the rubbed rubber, and I feel like that'd make your picture more engaging if it had the actual lead shavings on the eraser. One last thing--the way you have your middle and end joints drawn for your pointer finger makes the finger seem disproportionately wide at the bottom, and that makes the top look very think indeed.

Otherwise, the drawing itself is fine--good work.

Thanks! I was worrying about finishing the bottom of the hand because I don't want the picture to have too much unbalanced white space on the top. I'll definitely do that now that you mention it though.
