I would probably suggest the following:

Catcher in the Rye
To Kill a Mockingbird
Lord of the Flies
Of Mice and Men

Those are great books that I read especially To Kill a Mockingbird and Of Mice and Men. Depression Era books (or books that were written about/in the depression) are some of my favourite books to read.

looks suspiciously like my reading list for year 12 english/literature...

Did not enjoy any of these, probably because I had to pick them apart and analyse them.

Although catcher in the rye was just so annoying the first time around. And it got worse with subsequent reads.

The breif and wondrous life of oscar Wao - Juniot Dias

This book is magical, and full of great nerdy references, which i know you'll love. i'd try to describe it, but i really can't find the words, might just be the beer talkin' though, whatever read this book you will not regret it.

I easily get paralyzed by book threads because I read too much, I always think that theres too many books to prescribe just a few, and OMG I haven't read some of the books mentioned above!

If you want "A Long Way Gone" is a great book about "getting through" stuff, it is written by an ex-child soldier.

I'm reading A Game of Thrones right now. I'm about 2/3 of the way through and it's awesome. It's been recommended many times in past book recommendation threads, so be sure to check it out if you're into fantasy.

Two self-biographies I just read:

Diary of a Teenage Girl

Found this in a used bookstore and read the thing pretty much from beginning to end. It can be at times a little uncomfortable if you're a guy, but discomfort always keeps things engaging and interesting.

The Volunteer

About a Canadian-born man's career in the Mossad. Quick, easy to read, highly regarded (it was mentioned in some newer espionage books as essential reading, but I can't remember at the moment which recommended it) and very interesting if you're into that kind of stuff.

That's weird, those were the last 2 books that I finished and would recommend. I would recommend Outliers more though.

I'll vouch for this. My dad read it and thought it was brilliant, I'm gonna read it next
