So next year I will be attending the University of Texas at Austin. I haven't even arrived yet but I'm already making an attempt to find the StarCraft scene there. So far, I've only really managed to contact 2 or 3 other people going to UT as well who are kinda into StarCraft.
So basically, not too much success yet. Which is quite unfortunate, because I have a lot planned!
I want to host tournaments, but not stop there. I want to make the spectator sport scene come into play. I want shoutcasting, dramatic intros, dual commentaries, the crowd, everything. And I'm willing to work toward making it work too. Even today, I was brainstorming music to use for the intros, and Austin is a GREAT place to get some footage.
I just need to find the people. Anyone out there go to UT and know about the SC scene? Or does anyone have any advice to help me get this stuff started better/more efficiently? (Setting up tournaments through LAN or other networks, etc)

Haha I'm not talking about bringing it to the world, I wanna bring it to UT (if it's not already there. If it is, I wanna be part of it!)
But yeah, I do plan to do SC2 as well when that finally gets released.

CSL team was pretty decent, but then the members irl got busy and the team disbanded... I think some of them are also graduating this year too
should be a LOT of people who play casually though
|
I go to UT and I play SC2, but I'm don't know anybody else here that follows the scene. I know there are some because we had a team, but I think a lot graduated. There was a BW lan a few months ago as well.

Yeah I recently contacted the guy who made the last(?) UT LAN tournament but I think he got busy with stuff or something.
It seems like a lot of the major players are graduating soon, but I think this gives us a new opportunity to bring SC2 at full force. I'm really trying to get people together asap though so we can start working right away.

i'm currently playing hon and sc2, peter and allen were two of the big sc players here but they're both graduating i think
that's all i really know, i don't really keep up with this shit ;p

Texas Tech is where it's at! All the pros go there, like HeavOnEarth and I. haha

I'm at UT and play both BW and SC2 Beta. The people above are right though; it'd be much wiser to focus on SC2. There's a noticeable lack of PC Cafes around Austin, but I know that at one point we had a very solid CSL team. Anyway, I think a SC2 group would be great, but somebody needs to be pro active at organizing games/tournaments/etc!

i like how people get interested when i graduate. i cant tell if this is a coincidence or irony. because i never cared for english class.

ah I thought this was gonna be about some unreal tournament mod
|
Am i the only one expecting an Unreal Tournament Starcraft mod because of the topic?
edit: ah, i'm not :D

Haha I'm sorry for the deceiving title. That would be quite interesting though, no?
Anyways, after hearing your responses, I do believe it would be best to focus on SC2. New wave, new faces, new opportunities. And I plan to be heading the movement significantly.
So is there anything else I should know about setting stuff up at UT?

UT had an ok CSL team, you should be able to find them.

haha sad day, i'm graduating and this happens. there are some great players here, depending what dorm you live in youll have different success. I know where i live the quad, there are semi frequent lans, ive hosted a couple in the quad but other than that youll see nubs playing or watching youtube videos
if you are a cs major join acm ( i think, ill ask around) but they have building basement with computers and they usually lan there.

Yeah Unfortunately it seems like I'm coming a little late. But hopefully I'll still be able to find the next wave of UT gamers. I think I'll probably start the SC2 student organization in order to figure out what we are and aren't willing to do as a group instead of me deciding it all.
Any places in particular that you think would pretty much be open or willing to let us host tournaments most of the time?
Current Plans of Action: -Create an official SC2 student organization -Set up a tournament -Decide whether or not there will be enough of a crowd to have casting -Find a suitable location and time for the tournament -Shoot and edit an awesome intro for the tournament -Suggest and brainstorm the possibility of a "UT Starleague" with player stats, official rankings, teams if there are enough people, etc.

You're aiming for something that basically nobody in the US has been able to accomplish, let alone a few university students. Don't get me wrong, we go to a wonderful school with a ton of students that could potentially be interested, but I don't think you'll ever reach the kind of participation that you're listing (live audience with commentating, etc).
I think that setting up a group that plays regularly together, hosting tournaments, and maybe doing a few videos would be a great way to start.

Yeah it's a ridiculously tall order to be honest. It's more of something I'm going to work toward than anything, and over the course of the 4 years, not all at once.
Most likely, the key items that will work out for the first year would be the regular tournaments, so to at least establish the community. I'm probably going to pitch the ideas of the others early on though, especially if I feel like we have a decent number of people. I feel like the videos (like pimpest plays, tournament highlights, intro videos, etc) and ranking systems might entice more people to join the scene, which would hopefully spark a larger interest in watching as well.
But like I said, all working toward. I want at least the regular tournaments, and I'll probably just make the videos because I want to haha.
