I'm in love with the Alienware m11x. It's small and light, maybe not quite a netbook but definitely ultraportable. Great battery life, has all the cool alienware lights, and has an awesome graphics card. There are videos of it running Crysis, Left 4 Dead 2, and yes, SC2. I would buy it in an instant but the only problem is that the screen is tiny - 11.6".
Has anyone ever managed to play on a small screen? The resolution is actually decent so that shouldn't be a problem, but I think it might be a pain using a tiny minimap. The keyboard is also slightly smaller but that could be a good thing since it would be easier to reach number hotkeys.

Personally, I advise against getting Alienware computers. My family has had 3 of them, none have made it past the 2 year mark (one was a laptop, two were desktops).
Lenovo laptops are pretty good, but as for gaming I don't know. I just suggest to people to get something other than Alienwares.

I played SC on my 10" Asus just fine. The smaller screen makes it easier to see the minimap.

well I haven't had a single laptop work solidly past 2 years. I actually have a lenovo t500 right now, but the graphics card died right before the beta came out >

Should I get a laptop or a PC for SC2
As a writer portability is nice but not supreme. Opinions?

yeah smaller has advantages like seeing everything at the same time, definitely doable imo

I play BW on a Samsung N120 (10,1" screen). It's not good enough to run SC2 (I've tried and failed), but of course has no problem running BW. It took some getting used to, but as long as you have a good mouse and a little patience, you won't have any problems getting used to playing on it.

just hook it up to a regular monitor when playing games

I think the small netbook keyboards are harder to get used to than the monitor size.

i have a netbook and played sc all summer with it and will be using it tomorrow at a lan too they are pretty good, especially since mine is about 85% of the normal keyboard length so its not that big of a deal. the keyboard is probably the main thing you want to worry about, it makes things a lot different

this was prior to Dell buying out alienware, this was when Alienware was their own company.
Took 10 weeks for my computer to be delivered to me from the time it was ordered, then died 2 years later :/
alotta $$$ down the drain

I play SC1 on a Lenovo X61. It has a screen of 12.1", and it's very manageable. I also have a netbook that's 8.9", but that one's way too small and not do-able imo.

I'm assuming you want a gaming laptop because your current machine is inadequate. Don't do it. Playing Crysis/most FPSes on that thing is nothing more than a gimmick... a screen that size makes it absolutely painful. Please don't tell me you're going to use something like that as your main machine.

one good thing about having a smaller screen is that you can run at higher detail levels without straining your gpu
