Over the past week, I have been experiencing the most atrocious internet ever. That makes gaming INTERNET BROWSING TEAMLIQUID BROWSING impossible. Yeah its that bad.
On a good day minute, it can be . and more often then not its like:
It is seriously atrocious. At first i didn't mind it, but it has since become a regular occurrence.
Refer to this for more of my ISP fail + iCCup lag. http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?id=116247
The lag is soo bad, the lag meter in LoL, is busted cause my ping is off the charts like what the fuck. + Show Spoiler + I'm paying like ~$40 a month for my high speed internet and now i don't think its worth it. my ISP is Shaw, which is based in Calgary. So what I'm wondering is, Is it just Shaw's internet that is retarded? If it is, What are other good, stable ISPs in Alberta?
I'm pretty sure that there is nothing wrong on my end. (but I'm not good with hardware related stuff). Like i changed my 4 year old router for a new one. (I don't know if that even helps). I asked them for help, but it didn't really help.
I hate it.
Like wtf. Super inconsistant.

I still think we coulda won if it wasn't for Afking Morgana :< more gank into push was needed and she was our only true stun :<
edit: thats true prolly coulda actually ganked and such more efficienctly and last hitted to stack your SoTO
This is my internet daily but atleast my ping is fairly decent :/ not like an unbearable 400 thats kinda rediculous for 40 dollars a month I pay 20 and get this and I generally am great :<

If i wasn't lagging it wouldn't have turned out as bad as it did.

That ok? Damn, had to go more than 700 miles.
I was going to post my speed meter (which is a bit faster then your fucked up one at it's best) but i noticed your ping is owning you badly.
Perhaps they are changing something and it gets fixed in a couple of days. In the mean time: read a book, go out and get some exercise and clean up your house because you know you never will.

Problem is that I'm used to fast internet, so when its slow it really pisses me off. I do all those, except I don't really clean up my house. (I have a cleaner person/maid). The thing is Teamliquid is soo addictive, so yea.

Hey cool I didn't know about this pingtest site, thanks
Umm my internet is basically always like this. There is a 100-200ms average ping whenever I try to play hamachi with my friends who are in the SAME CITY as me.
At least you can get 24 on a good day
edit: holy shit how do I have 20% packet loss lol, I should probably talk to my ISP about it
pangshai, you probably have it worst then i do. After i read the 3rd link, i was like wow i feel fortunate to be able to have fast internet, and that my ISP wasn't as bad as that one. Having that type of ISP would be torture for me. If i had a bit slower but more consistent/stable internet I would be fine with it. =(
so this is when my siblings have torrent on in the other room..
wait what the fuck.....jitter > ping?
Internet sucks bad here. sometimes it's also hardware.
Unable to test packet loss wow. If it is the hardware, i wouldn't know how to fix it. =X usually when I torrent my speed is barely affected, only noticeable when i try to game.
Hahaha, I don't have a certain Java Plugin they needed so yeah....but I bet packet loss with be more than 100%
Just wondering, is your connection is shared to your whole neighbourhood?
It's so hard to find good ISPs. Around here certain ISPs seem to only cover certain areas (maybe they have deals with each other, there's a convenient lack of overlapping) so people have a very limited choice, and that leads to no competition to motivate ISPs to improve their service.
So my ISP pretty much has a monopoly over this area, at least it's quite reliable and the speed is consistent.
Pretty sure its just my house, as my neighbors probably have a different ISP.
It's possible they share it over an even larger area, maybe it's just unreliable though.
I just think it's nonsense how then can legally advertise something as a 20 Mb/s connection when they really mean "Maximum 20 Mb/s" or "20 Mb/s 51% of the time" or "20 Mb/s when you're not using it."
Yea i know, and apparently there is a different between MB/s and Mb/s too. -_-

I used to think that there was just a *huge* overhead in my downloads. Then I divided my average by 8, then I was like, oh... Never mind.

When I lived in Calgary I was getting massive ping and loss on my Shaw line. I finally got them to send a technician around. It turned out the line had been rubbing against a tree outside the house for a long time and was almost stripped bare. The technician replaced the line (and told us to remind the landlord to get the tree pruned) and after that we didn't have any problems. So, if you think everything at your end is OK (fuck wireless, make sure you're hooked in via ethernet) it could be worth giving Shaw a call.
I see, thanks for the advice, i'll call them later.
o.O I live in Calgary but I use telus and it works ok. But my friends use shaw and whenever someone else in their house is using the internet, they lag like crazy. Like I can still play games while someone is streaming video, but sometimes my friends get huge lag if someone is watching youtube in their house.
The only thing wrong with this is download limits.
I should be free of those in a few months!
FIOS
PS. Probably going to get the 25/25 package from them in the near future.

btw if you're gonna switch, don't switch to telus. It sucks so bad at times. Like the whole telus network will go down and no one using telus will have internet for the whole day. Also its slower than shaw on average.
Oh shit, I'll have to look into other ISPs then.
How do I get a B grade when I can't game at all here at work. Packet loss is ridiculous.can't host games and lag to hell in any joined games.
evidently my ping reflects my iccup level =(
Lol your ISP is road runner. =X I thought hosting games had to do with ports and stuff.
On March 31 2010 04:33 Gao Xi wrote: Lol your ISP is road runner. =X I thought hosting games had to do with ports and stuff. It's mostly because of this belkin router that sucks ass even if I configure it properly. But also, our internet cuts out and lags every 15mins to an hour
I'm surprised I scored this well considering the distance of my adapter from the wireless router and the obstructions involved. Best result has been: 3.32 Mb/s down and 0.32 Mb/s up. Worst was something like 2.41 Mb/s down and 0.31 up. The ping test was super solid (A grade; 28ms ping; 2ms Jitter; ~250 mile away server) so, on the whole, fairly impressive for being on wireless and living in the middle of nowhere.
Definitely sounds like you need to get on the ISPs case about the inconsistency. Low constant throughput is one thing, but bouncing between 30 Mb/s downs and 2 Mb/s downs is pretty crazy.

fuck this thread make our internet service look like crap.

WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON WITH SHAW.
My internet is also slow as fuck, I get "Page Loading Errors" 80% of the time, it took me a good 20 minutes to be able to post here. I called Shaw already and they said "it should work properly", fucking idiots, and I'm the only one on the internet, I've tried resetting router AND modem and still nothing has changed.
HOLY FUCK IM RAGING ...
Same, it totally sucks. However i haven't had a huge ass lag spike/inconsistancy for the past day. So it seems i don't have to switch yet.
Sigh.. this is why I can hardly play sc2..
wow 1.7 rating. O_O You should switch ISPs, cause what you're paying is probably not worth it imo.
You guys are having trouble with Shaw?
well if everyone else is doing it I'll do it too ^^
Shaw line in Victoria.
BTW arcology, 24% packet loss is ridiculous... any application will have severe problems at that kind of level. If you're on wireless, you need to get closer to the router, have less stuff between you and it, or just get on wired instead; if you're already on wired you need to give your ISP hell until they fix it.
I've gotten 60 Mb/s at like 3 am, since there a lot of people are my university its worse around 8-12.
Surprised how close mine is to what it should be. xD
Someone in University of Western Ontario post one of this is there are anyone who go there?

Shaw's been working fine for me. There's been a couple times where I couldn't seem to connect to the Internet at all, but that hasn't happened for a long time.
I guess it might only be my area that is affected, that sucks. I'm gonna call them and see whats wrong. Probably the wire or w/e.

Bad lag is probably a localized thing anyway -- maybe there is a hardware problem in your area, or maybe several of your neighbours are hardcore torrenters.
