So, another day where I don't have too much to say. Hope you like the selections!
1. Kalmah - They Will Return What? Melodic death metal When? 2002 Why? Great guitars on this album, I really love it when metal bands allow themselves a few catchy riffs. Show me!+ Show Spoiler +
2. The Maccabees - Colour It In What? Indie When? 2007 Why? A nice, friendly indie band. A bit like Vampire Weekend without the African influence perhaps. Show me!+ Show Spoiler +
3. Don Caballero - American Don What? Math Rock When? 2000 Why? A very nice instrumental, jazz inspired album. A bit technical for casual listening perhaps, but very good. Show me!+ Show Spoiler +
4. Fuck Buttons - Street Horrrsing What? Post-rock When? 2008 Why? Like a train driving over múm. Beautiful sounds mixed with a very deep drone. Show me!+ Show Spoiler +
5. Ill Bill - The Hour of Reprisal What? Hip Hop When? 2008 Why? Similar delivery to Vinnie Paz, with slightly more varied production. Really kick ass album. Show me!+ Show Spoiler +
Since my music computer is back online, I can listen to the music before I add it again. Hope you guys enjoy the selection. Also, if anyone can tell me who sings the chorus on the Ill Bill track I would be super impressed!
Disclaimer: The title says that it is Daigomi's guide to good listening. That means its my opinion. Feel free to disagree as long as you provide reasons; I enjoy a good discussion as much as the next person. Also, I just like listening to music, I don't give a shit for the political implications of any music.
Day 4 - Eti307 - Wale sampling Yann Tiersen Day 8 - - Name a song that samples Rodriguez's Sugar Man. Day 9 - - Which arcade game's music is sampled in Percee P's 2 Brothers From The Gutter? Day 14 - ZZangDreamjOy - Cake's Long Skirt/Short Jacket as Chuck's theme song. Day 17 - ZZangDreamjOy - Max Cavalera in Ill Bill's War is my Destiny.

No problem! I get lots of recommendations, so it's very useful for me too

I love the riffs to "They will return" but unfortunately, the singing is just horrible to me. I really got to get used to screaming, missing a lot of good songs
Haven't posted in your guide threads yet but I really feel like thanking you for the effort now, I've been listening to most of them every time I've seen your post and have found quite a few that I've enjoyed very much.
jeeeez that Ill Bill video is sick. I think that's the first time I've heard shouting in a real hip hop track.
Liked fuck buttons when I saw them posted in that other thread too

Unfortunately I dislike this kind of screaming as well and I think I never will since I'm generally open minded about this stuff but still dont get used to it after such a long time.

Haha, I think I'll start listening second albums by artists at some point, but for now I'm trying to keep it to one album per artist, and like your initial link suggests, Silent Shout should be everyone's first The Knife listen!
On March 15 2010 06:21 WaveMotion wrote: the fuckbuttons song was annoying... sorry?
Haha, it's one of the albums that's quite complex I guess. To me, it's like four styles of music that I know by heart mixed into one song. I dunno, maybe because I know the genres so well, I don't focus on the single sounds (like the drone or the growls), but rather on how they go together? Still, it's not an album that I would expect everyone to enjoy.

Definitely! Some of the best sounds are in metal, it's all about getting over the harshness of the music. I can promise you that if you listen to some of the lighter metal regularly for a while, you'll get used to it. It's like drinking beer, takes a while to get used to but it's worth it

So thanks for the effort and hope you keep going.
Awesome, it's good that people are enjoying the music. I'm intending to keep going for as long as possible. As it is now, it's not taking me too long to do, and I get to listen to some of my favourite music while writing it, so I'm enjoying it

Haha, that is very impressive. I'll be honest, when I listened to the song I had it on the tip of my tongue, but I couldn't figure it out. Eventually I checked the filename to see :p It's such a great combination though, it's almost surprising that fewer true rappers don't make use of metal. I mean, you get those shitty rap-metal groups, but they're almost always the worst of both worlds.
On March 15 2010 07:14 yes9111 wrote: Oh fuck yes Kalmah! Will listen to the other recommendations but I second Kalmah
Haha, if I'm not mistaken, Kalmah is one first five metal artists I ever listened to, so I'll always have a soft spot for them. The song I linked was the second growl song I ever liked (I'll post the first ever growl song I liked tomorrow ).

I got Tarot Sport yesterday, but I haven't listened to it yet Will give it a listen soon though! How's it different from Street Horrrsing?

The whole Ill Bill album is awesome, I've had at least three different favourite tracks from it. At the moment, War is My Destiny is just insane to me. I mentioned it earlier, but I really wish we hap proper rap-metal.
Also, like I said earlier, I really think growling can grow on you, especially if you're willing to give it a chance. I remember liking metal but disliking growls for at least six months after I started listening to metal. After a while you can start ignoring it, and a while after that, you find yourself enjoying it and distinguishing between styles of growling. Haha, maybe it's easier to start when you're younger and you don't mind disliking an integral part of the music for a long time :p

Well I've gotten accustomed to certain types of singing. Like when I first got into heavy music I didn't like Machinehead because of Flynn's voice. Or when I started listening to Isis I thought "this band would be amazing if it wasnt for the dude with the bad voice and his growling". All that's long gone now, but most of the death metal stuff I still can't get over. But isn't this screaming and not growling? I always thought growling was more low-pitch than this.
Btw. went through an earlier blog post of yours that had K-Os in it. Sweet I really liked that guy's album although I only very rarely listen to HipHop nowadays, completely missed that he released a new album in 2009.
Oh btw your album date for Hour Of Reprisal seems to be wrong, according to a certain website I went to after reading this it was released in 08

oh wow are you in for a treat — Tarot Sport was one of my favorites from last year. I think the biggest difference is the hooks: Tarot Sport has more melody to it, it's much easier to hum along to. The best tracks (Surf Solar, Lisbon Maru, Flight of the Feathered Serpent) each build toward an epic synth line that soars above all the loops and layers.
Oh and let me also give you a little recommendation, since this was basically the only HipHop album I've listened to this year. I guess listening to his album wont do much for you since most of all he's a brilliant lyricist rapping in a language you don't understand (German) but maybe you'll enjoy this song, since this is one where the emotional aspect should shine through even if you dont know exactly what he's saying. (Since it's rather obvious what it's about )
edit: Ahhh so the dude in "war is my destiny" really was Max Cavalera, I thought that the voice sounded like his.

To be honest, I have no idea if it's called screaming or growling anymore. I think growling should be fine, but I haven't engaged in any metal discussions in about 5 years, completely out of the scene. These days I just listen on my own, so there's not a need to make those distinctions :p
The K-Os album is really something interesting in hip hop. Very worth a listen! It's actually the first album I've listened to by him. Are his older albums any good?
I'm fairly sure Hour of Reprisal is a 2008 release. It's also listed as 2008 on Musicbrainz, so I think the other site probably made a mistake.

Ahh great stuff. I love listening to Street Horrrsing, but it only works at specific times and specific moods. A more accessible album will make me listen to them even more!

My German is just about good enough to keep up with the lyrics (I lived in Germany for a year when I was younger), although sometimes I just can't decipher it fast enough :p I found a youtube video with lyrics which was very useful! How's the rest of the album? That song is seriously good.
Yeah I said the hour of reprisal was released in 2008, your OP says 2004 though
cool that you understand german I do think that that Prinz Pi song is the best one on the album but it is still overall strong, not really any weak songs on it. this is another one from it: + Show Spoiler +
Although one of my favourite tracks of his this one:
jeez, it's 12 years old now, I still remember the first time I heard it, far from the super clean production of present hiphop but I love the raw energy and his awesomily insane conspiracy theories, one of the classics of German Hiphop
The only K-Os album I have is the one before the newest, Atlantis - Hymns for disco. Like the title implies this album has some seriously catchy songs, which arent really hiphop anymore. Really good stuff though
