Thanks for the nice recommendations yesterday, I'm still busy giving them a listen. Once again, five new albums, tell me what you like and what you don't!

1. The Knife - Silent Shout
What? Electropop
When? 2006
Why? Very distinct atmosphere, good melodies, very good album.
Show me! + Show Spoiler +

2. Mogwai - Mr Beast
What? Post-Rock
When? 2006
Why? Mogwai is a bit unpredictable for me, but this whole album is good.
Show me! + Show Spoiler +

3. Slint - Spiderland
What? Post-punk
When? 1991
Why? Difficult to categorize album, has some brilliant riffs
Show me! + Show Spoiler +

4. Dragonlord - Rapture
What? Thrash metal
When? 2001
Why? One of the best albums in the genre, nice and brutal.
Show me! + Show Spoiler +

5. Marco Polo - Port Authority
What? Hip Hop
When? 2007
Why? One of the best producers in hip hop, I always feel that producers should release more albums.
Show me! + Show Spoiler +

So, what do you guys think today? Any good recommendations you can make? Also, I realise I've now added to hip hop albums mostly because of the producer in a row... I dunno, I enjoy listening to good producers just as much as listening to good rappers. And when the two combine, it's just perfect.

Disclaimer: The title says that it is Daigomi's guide to good listening. That means its my opinion. Feel free to disagree as long as you provide reasons; I enjoy a good discussion as much as the next person. Also, I just like listening to music, I don't give a shit for the political implications of any music.

Mogwai! I love that classical sound, Caspian and Explosions In The Sky are also similarly awesome. Any lesser-known ones you'd recommend?

Check out the more indie post-rock too, specifically Moving Mountains and The Appleseed Cast.. great stuff

I did a guide to post rock way back which might have some recommendations. Everything on there I really like

I've got appleseed cast, but I've only listened to them once or twice, any specific albums you can recommend? Moving Mountains I haven't heard of before, so what can I try out there? Thanks for all the recommendations btw, I depend a lot on recommendations to get new music.

ahh cheers for that, any other albums by 65daysofstatic you'd suggest? they're fun

as for appleseed cast their latest album Sagarmatha is great, it's a more traditional post rock sound, listen!:
+ Show Spoiler +

their older stuff like Two Conversatons leans towards the indie rock/even emo side of things, I prefer it. listen!
+ Show Spoiler +

So yeah I'd recommend those two, really shows how much their sound has changed :p Moving Mountains rock, they've only released 1 album but they're all on last.fm to listen to so give them a try, Grow On, Grow Up, Grow Out!

+1 for silent shout. The Knife make interesting music. Something that's become rare now for some reason. Here's another track from silent shout:

Mogwai sound a lot like Sigur Ros, but with a more acoustic sound whereas SR is more electronic. They remind me of Bedhead.

Thanks for the great list.

So in this thread, I've seen three post-rock names I haven't come across before...fucking awesome (:

Gonna be checking out Caspian, Sigur Ros, Bedhead.

I always thought Sigur Ros was the most well-known post-rock group It seems like everyone knows Sigur Ros these days!

Wow, thanks for reminding me of Mogwai.

I've been watching this blog, there is always some pretty interesting stuff to be found, even if I don't agree with many of them. Thanks and keep it going

edit: Maybe I should throw in some recommendations too since you're asking for it and I used to be a lot into metal stuff. Check out
Uphill Battle - Wreck of nerves
Intronaut - Void
Callisto - True nature unfolds
Callisto - Noir

Erm, I could recommend so much stuff, but start with these and maybe I'll recommend more some other time.

Awesome, thanks! I'll have a look at the recommendations. Also, as long as your reason for disagreeing isn't simply that you dislike the genre, then I'm all for disagreement

I got into post-rock while finding bands in the same vein as ISIS, whom I found after seeing live at a Tool concert.

I found Red Sparowes first, since they're on the same label as ISIS. From there, I ran into Russian Circles, Mogwai, God is an Astronaut and Explosions in the Sky. I love post-rock/metal, but I don't know many bands in it :X

artists name is called "The Northern Lights"
i really really enjoyed this album. it's like hip-hop + ambient. i think you should give it a listen. here:

i want to make another post: perhaps you know an artist by the name of Shad K?
one of my favorite artists lately, from canada. he's really really good. i suggest you check both of his albums out. he is seriously one of the most underrated artists.

Red Sparrowes are still my favourite post-rock group, absolutely love them. If you like the heavier side of Post-Rock then you should definitely try Pelican (Australasia is a good starting point), and also obviously Godspeed You! Black Emperor. You might also enjoy something like Sunn O))), although that's more experimental metal than post-rock.

I have the same thing, where I know an artist and even have some albums, but then never listen to them until someone reminds me to do so That Marco Polo album is damn nice, mostly because I like his production style (very similar to DJ Premier's), but also because he chooses brilliant rappers to partner with (like Copywrite and Wordsworth).

Northern Lights is interesting, I'll give the full album a download and listen. The youtube song is nice, but it reminds me a bit of Mike Shinoda who I don't like that much. Will give the album a listen to see what I think though. An album is always better than a single song!

Actually I know all of those bands...just forgot about them. Pelican is pretty good, and I listen to them occasionally, but their writing seems a bit messy and disorganized sometimes.

I think Godspeed You! Black Emperor is...not a good band. In my opinion, they're just trying too hard and failing at it.

Sunn O))) I've actually never really had a chance to really listen to. They sound interesting, and actually they were recommended to me as a branch off of doom metal (along with Amorphis, oddly enough), but never got around to trying them out.

If you have any more recommendations, though, I would love to try them out!

About Bedhead - From what I heard they only made one album, What fun life was. I read that it was amazing but never made it to mainstream and that they didn't make any more. But from the looks of the stuff on youtube they seem to have made more material. The album is very mellow and laid back. Perfect for the mp3player or while doing work. No songs really stand out, but the album as a whole is interesting and unique.

I'm not a massive post-rock aficionado but I did have a phase at one point. Cloudkicker is a good post-metal artist I was recommended once, you can download all the albums from a link off their myspace.
I've heard good things about Mono's latest album, Hymn to the Immortal Wind, haven't checked it out personally but it might be a good listen.

That Mogwai song is amazing. As Espers said, the similarities to Explosions in the Sky is ridiculously similar.
I don't have mono anymore. Woooo!
