you dont know much about game development do you?
developing a 3d game, modelling 3d figures are much more flexible then drawing sprites.
You would need high resolution sprites which look good on high resolution screens [this is not 640 480 anymore], making those is years' work. If you want to modify something on a character, you have to change that on every directional sprite [omfg thats disgusting to even think about] but if you use 3d models this is a simple job.
Thats why even fighting game developers slowly crawl toward 3D.
