Hey TL! On Friday night I recieved an SC2 Beta invite, and over the weekend I and a couple friends have played ~100 games. Currently I am just a hair under rank four in a silver league. These are my impressions so far as a zerg player.

General

The build I've been using for the most part is 13 or 14-pool into lair and hydralisks. It does extremely well, as long as I can get my opponent to play it cautiously for the first few minutes. It fails against aggressive bio builds, and having good knowledge of your opponent's base/unit composition is a must. Zerg seems to have a very easy time containing players; around 50% of my wins had the opponent contained to his main, or his main and nat.

Also! I find the speed upgrade for Overlords very useful, and at 50/50/50 it is dirt cheap and fast. I get it almost every game.

ZvZ

This matchup I have the easiest time winning, though early aggression tends to screw me up. Tomorrow I'll try spawning some zerglings/roaches before teching to lair. If I can get my roach army going, though, roach speed and ranged attack +1 usually wins it for me; the hydra transition that seems to be popular just folds to it.

Can anyone explain to me the theory behind using a nydus network to backstab when I attack my opponenet's main? It's happened 2 or 3 times today.

ZvT

This is the match I've played the most. With maybe one exception, the only thing that's beaten my current build is an MM(M) timing push as my hydra tech is about to kick in. Though I've seen the theory, it seems that scans are still very useful, as those usually precede my demise before the ten-minute mark. If the T does not push before then, mass hydras tend to eat everything alive; in the last few games, I've gone even hydra-roach for my first battle, and after that switched to exclusively hydras.

ZvP

I have not played against a very good protoss yet, sadly. Some Ts and Zs have kicked my butt out of nowhere, but Ps tend to have no idea how to counter my Hydra mass. When I win my first battle I drop a spire and expo (again, as the case may be), and when I see his first Colossus I stall and build some corruptors. After I beat his army again I tech to hive for hydra/moustache pwnage.

Sadly, I have not seen HTs in any army compositions in my ZvP forays. Mostly it's been robo bays, with a smattering of void ray/stargate builds. Most of these I've managed to contain easily.

basically, hydras are pretty awesome and very few low-level Ps or Ts know how to counter them. Roach play is overrated, my silver and bronzed brethren! To the hydra den!

Terran

My friend played quite a few games as T over this weekend, trying to perfect a banshee rush. It wasn't quite an all-in, but depended rather heavily on the opponent failing to find the starport before the harass started. The build basically went like this: tech straight to starport, research cloak and build banshee. After 1-2 banshees, make a seige tank and seige.

Problem is, seige tends to finish about half a minute after your opponent has countered and made his way into your base. I'd like to see a build that went banshee->seige mode->cloak->seige tank or something like that; even switching the seige tank and cloak, maybe? It seems to me that the banshee would do just as well uncloaked until the opponent started turreting, and then it wouldn't really matter.

That's about all for tonight; what do you think, TL?

Edit: Feel free to add me if you're on the US server! My nick is reciprocate.eloen

I dunno if the people I'm playing are really inexperienced or what, but I just go 2 starport banshees and cloak after like 4 of them. Usually they try to counter me with 3rax marine/mara and I make bunkers to defend. It's worked out pretty well, but I'm not sure how much cloak plays a difference here. Probably would be able to snipe a lot more scvs, but with a faster banshee pump I can pick off turrets and deal more damage over time. This could be a completely shit build, I've only played the beta for maybe 10 hours lol

In TvT most of my opponents go 2 starport banshee . You can try opening with reaper harras in to 1fact / 1starport and start massing tanks and vikings , works pretty well for me . Most of the time i just rally my starport with reactor to his base and kill the banshees before he even inflicts damage . You can take your expo safely since you have air control add a second starport and a factory and just play it like Broodwar with tank/dropships wraiths(vikings) .

The main thing early game in my ZvT is to deny scouting. If his peon hits my mineral line, I surround with workers and kill it. If I have a queen out when he comes, it's dead already (I usually have two Zerglings in base as well). Always spawn 2-3 lings to take the observer towers in the middle of the map. They are OP and underused in silver leagues.

Now my build:

10 ovie
14 pool
15 extract
15 extract
15 ovie
15 queen (right after ovie) -> START LAIR
15 2 larva to lings

After this, I usually pump drones with a few lings and suicide a couple to scout his base. I tend to overlord around 24 because I don't like getting supply stuck. As soon as lair pops, drop a hydra den and research overlord speed. Once speed is finished, give his base a good scout. Before my den finishes I get two overlords and then start pumping hydras. I tend to expo either as my hydras move out or when lair is upgrading.

Now for eventualities:

If I'm feeling particularly cocky or just stupid, I'll drop an evo chamber while lair is upgrading and start on carapace. Usually, I drop my evo after I feel secure with the number of hydras I have.

If in my early scouts I see him 2rax or 3, I'm thinking about building a roach nest at 15 instead of upgrading lair, because atm this build is weak against early pushes (same w/ zeals, only Ps 2gate is usually faster that Ts bio push).

GL HF man. I hope you teach terrans to fear the zerg! I wonder how 5pool works versus protoss since their gate comes later...
