I understand people saying +1 rank of current, I do the same thing because people just leave.
Why say A- when you are B- ? Both are terrifying for newb player.... if you are B- say B- ffs. Or lie and say C- to not scare away newbs but why A-? What's the point? This is what I don't understand...

He is real A-... I ask his rank and he says a rank... further discussion reveals 72-21 a- which is EXACTLY what he is, was really cool manner korean, is in movie's clan (movie is leader of clan on west, so he says, I trust him) we had good chat and games. Why can't it be like this always T_T

It's a retarted question to ask about some1's rank. Don't expect to get an honest answer. It's like some1 here said u have no obligation to answer such a question. It's like asking a random -player about he's race when the game starts just to get an advantage.

I mean it's an internet game played by youngsters. If some people find it fun to tease others into thinking they're better than they are then they will do it. There doesn't need to be a more complicated reason than that.

probably happens because when people ask about rank, it's just like... why the hell do you care.
For example I played some D+ zerg and beat him with 1 gate scout into expo.. and told him was A- when he asked lol. It just seems like the most pointless question. Why would you ever care about the rank of someone who beat you enough to ask them in game? The replay reveals all about their strat, and then its up to you to see what you could've done about it. Of course, if you win and you were playing far above your normal level in a very close and tense game, then that's another matter.

It's obvious that the Starcraft gene that makes Koreans so good at Starcraft is also responsible for the affinity to lying about Starcraft rank. The same gene may be a contributing factor in liking horrible music but I won't make any unfounded statements.
