Well, how about some background first eh?
I'm quite new to TL. I love playing starcraft, but I hardly have the time. I'm terrible at it, but I'm better than my general group of friends. I'm Asian. :p I do really well in school, and I'm involved in lots of extracurriculars, but I have no life. Like, I'm a huge nerd, and if you saw me, you could easily beat me up. Oh, and I'm a sophomore in high school, so a bit younger than the general age group of TL, right?

Anyway, I suppose this story starts around January. See, there's this program in my school known as Honors Mentor Connection. It's a district program, but my school can only send 6 people to it. I applied... but there are a LOT of people who are really qualified. Essays, Resumes, and Letters of Rec. were all required. It was basically like applying for a College. Now, why do we want to get into this? Because HMC is a prestigious program where we get the chance to work with an expert in a field of interest, conduct research, and really stand out amongst our peers. The problem is... the field that I wanted to go into was economics, a field in which I hardly had ANY experience. Sure, I've talked about it with people, read up on the subject, and by then, I'd taken a course on it... but that's nothing special. I had no experience, and I really like economics, so I would've loved to get into HMC. Too bad though, as my writing skills are horrid. >_< You can just tell by this blog. =/ So I suppose I depended upon my interview(yes, we needed an interview too) to let myself stand out. Unfortunately, my interview went horribly. I was nervous, and I didn't express myself well. So, this is where I get to my current situation. 2 of my friends have received emails(I think?) telling them that they've gotten in... but I don't know who else has. T_T For all I know, the 6 spots are already filled. This obviously is cause for upset. I mean, I know I should move on, but I haven't gotten anything, not even an email for denial. And they received theirs like 8 hours ago. T_T I just want to make it in... Idk.
Also, I realized that lately, my community service hours have been... bad. I forgot to turn in my hours from last year for that president's award thing, and I haven't found another place to volunteer consistently at.
Furthermore, I don't really know how well my grades in other classes will hold up. I'm getting low As in English, AP Euro, and I think Math... This freaks me out as well. I don't know, maybe I just don't feel that great right now... Like, I see my academic career kind of falling apart...
But I thought I'd blog it. =/ Anyway, if you read this mess, thanks. Also, happy Chinese New Years, Valentine's Day, AND President's day. Haha, what a great weekend eh?

Hahahah, Im an asian honors kid sophomore in HS too!
My grades are really shaky right now, and I can only pray for all A's on my report card. I always feel pretty bad about my grades mid semester, theyre usually really low A's or high B's, and the stress is enormous.
Side note: I fucking hate AP World History, and it's gonna be my first B for sure. T_T

Sorry about how your interview went. Competing with other HS students is pretty nervewracking.

I hear you man,

I know the feeling of failing an application. I didn't get into HYRS when I applied in Gr.11 where I can work in a medical labratory to learn medicine in a practical setting. You just gotta keep working at it. Now I have worked at a labratory for two summers now and its a great experience.
Interview skills can be inproved through just speaking with people more often, or taking speech classes/clubs. I study hardcore cause I'm asian but I really like talking to people. I also took speech classes because I knew that in the future if I needed to do an interview or a presentation then I would be more adept. Try a debating club first.

Low As are fine for now anyways. Just worry more when your in university. I on the other hand am starting to sink into the B range lately so I shall work even harder to bring it back up to my usual A.

As for volunteering, I really don't know about volunteering for any economic jobs, but you should find something you like, but also allow you to socialize with people around you. I tutor and teach classes for my volunteering job and boy is it a great opportunity to talk about what you know lots of. Since your smart, you should seriously consider tutoring.

You dont have to take any of my advice but just putting it out there.

Ugh, I know. The feeling is just horrendous. >_< I wish I could get some experience in my field too... I just don't know how. Sigh... And Idk, I thought I was good at public speaking because I do Mock Trial. I speak in front of a judge on a pretty regular basis, lol, but that stuff is usually memorized. =/

Yeah, I should go tutor. Thanks for the Idea. There are tons of schools around here, hahaha. I just need some time I suppose. Thanks

Oh, I'm sorry about the WH thing. Yuck, yeah, I would never take World History. It's too broad to me, and I would be WAY stressed out by it. =/
And yeah... it was. It was a group interview too... so I'm like T_T lol. :p
Thank god for TSL right now. My savior atm. ^_^

I'm currently a high school senior, and I kind of know what you're going through right now. I'm also Asian, and went into high school with a great, well-thought out plan (it can't hurt, right?). Well, life decided to give me a big "fuck you!" (as life is known to do) and went the other way. I wanted to write for the school paper, but that just kind of never happened. I applied for this internship where I'd be programming C++ with the Navy (Office of Naval Research), and I got rejected from that. I thought I'd keep straight A's through high school, and I was pretty devastated when I got a B+/B, first in European History and then in US History. Meh. Yeah, a lot of people will look at those things and comment on how I'm some overachieving kid complaining about things I shouldn't be complaining about, but they mattered to me.

It's okay, though. I recently got accepted to UChicago, pretty much got accepted to Columbia (no CSL team, awwww), and I'm waiting to hear back from other colleges. I got National Merit Finalist stuff, and life's looking good. You just have to know that no single thing will screw up the future (the world is resilient like that). So you may have this great dream to do the HMC and get 4.0 throughout high school and a bunch of other stuff, but know that if, despite your best efforts, one or two of these things fall through the cracks, you're still good with whatever else you've got.

And yeah, find happiness in the little things in life, like a funny replay or a Flash eye twitch. Life will turn out good, because it takes a special kind of person to fail miserably at everything.

All I read was: Falling Apart, sophomore in high school. I laughed and posted this. No matter what your future goals are, no matter what your parents say, and no matter how hard the classes are: it is still only high school in the U.S. Shit isn't that serious, or that hard.

This is 100% correct. Failing to get into some HS honors program or getting *gasp* low A's is not gonna kill you. In the grand scheme of things, nobody cares/remembers.

He's asian in high school being watched by asian parents. It's a phase in life where A- is basically F.

thread winner lol.

but in all honesty getting a few A-'s in high school isn't going to kill you. in fact, i doubt it'll really even matter. and about the honors program.. i'm sure there are other options for you to get experience in the econ field. just be proactive about looking for stuff. finally, regarding community service- not turning in your hours? lol. if you're doing community service for the sake of doing good and helping the community, then what difference does it make whether or not you turned in your hours? if you're doing it for something to put on a resume though(sigh), not submitting your hours isn't a big deal either. while colleges do look at your extracurriculars, what they look at more seriously is not only what extracurriculars u did but the position u took in them. whether you had an officer position in said community service club (eg. treasurer of blabblah community service club.. was responsible for budgeting club's money making deposits etc etc) will be looked on a lot more favorably as opposed to member of blahblah did X hours. i really doubt they're going to look seriously at the # of hours u did in your soph year lol. chin up boy chin up

It really breaks my heart to see younger kids talk about being stressed over grades. The education system society has created is truly a flawed system.

Life is full of spectacular failure. A's and F's mean nothing. It's sad that the system emphasizes getting A's, not making mistakes, and memorizing information. These are probably the worst things you can teach someone to make them a productive, creative individual.
