This will be the Coaching Update blog #4:

Coaching Update#3 - Deals / other info

Customer Reviews

Things are going fantastic. I have witnessed and help cultivate some tremendous improvement with my students. But as cliche as it sounds, I have learned a lot as well! Nothing like grinding out the same bo for 2 hours to learn the very nuances of the build. I am extremely proud of those I have worked with and I am excited for what the future holds.

Some business:

I will be maintaining the deals I had before. First time customers get a 2 hour session for 15$ and every hour purchased as a bundle after 4 hours is half off. So for example 6 hours is 50$ as oppose to 60$ This has been received with tremendous support and I think it makes my lessons more accessible while still being worth my time!

The Dark Horse Tournament:

In conjunction with POLYGONREVUE (knf) we will be hosting a tourney called the "Dark Horse Tournament." This is a tournament that is only open to my past, present and future (sign up!) students. A full announcement will be released shortly by knf himself but essentially this is a tourney for those who don't get to play in many tourneys. PsyonicReaver and Huskythehusky will cast the semifinals/finals and hopefully make vods of those games as well. Full interviews and graphix will be made of the 2 top contenders as if they were in a big cash league! For prizes we only have lesson hours to give at the moment but we plan on running 2 more tourneys with the intent of growing the concept so eventually we have hardware or cash prizes.

I think this will be a nice tourney for people reviewing my sessions as it offers my students a chance to show what they have got/learned and observers can see them in action as well. Additionally it will just be another tourney to follow with some nice reps and commentated matches for everyone to enjoy.

Coaching contact:

As usual if you have any Q's please post in here or PM me. I am happy to discus whatever it is you would like. This has gone tremendously well thus far and I'd love to continue to grow this venture.

Strategic Discussion:

I'd like to open this thread to strategic discussion. If anyone has any questions they feel I could answer or someone else please post them here and we will discuss them!

Good luck and I hope this news gets some of you excited!

Just an idea: I think it might be interestng to have the final winner have a match (maybe bo3/bo5) vs you in the end. Sort of like the best student vs master type of thing, although I don't know exactly how low/high the skill level is of the players you're teaching.

Good luck with the coaching.

That isn't a bad idea at all but for this tourney I think I will allow the students to combat.

And you can remove the "if you are going through with this" it has been in the planning stages for over 2 weeks hehe.. it is certainly happening!

The tourney will have some pretty high level matches if I might say so myself. I don't like to name names when it comes to my students but rest assured the quality will be high. Especially at the upper levels of the tourney.

Congrats on the progress of this endeavor. It would be interesting to see the improvement rate of the students, via iccup ranks, to get an idea on exactly how beneficial it is to the average student. Anyways, props on the work done so far.

Oh sweet POLYGONREVUE is cool he's done some awesome audio interviews with some top players for the TSL and other things. This should be fun... I wonder if more people will take lessons now just to be able to play in this.

When you get caught opening 12 pool vs 12 hatch you need to take a risk or two to equalize the openings. I will usually make a pair of zerglings or so to force them to think I am making more and then I will drone behind them. This is dangerous however because they will have more larvae available to them so you need to play it right and keep them on the defensive.

Some ways of doing this are: keeping the lings OUTSIDE making him think they might be a part of a larger group or at least wanting to counter. Additionally you will probably need a sunk and to switch over to lings at the natural if he goes heavy ling. Use drones in conjunction with said forces for defense when the time comes as you will most likely be a few behind. But sunk+positioning + workers SHOULD hold it off if you matched the lings enough. The idea here is that you force him to go ling heavy while you sneak a drone or two and equalize the economy.

The most important thing is to not panic though. Yes their opening is better but NO you are not dead yet. Try and get a drone in or two on them and rely on the distances between bases to make up the ling difference.

Customer OPINION here, inc might have something else to say...

Lessons are mostly to tell you any major glaring flaws in your gameplay, tell you how to fix those flaws, but then you have to fix those flaws on your own time. It's really helpful for people who have played like 500 games but are still D-. Such players probably are doing something really fundamentally wrong and some tips can really benefit them.

There is no substitute for actually playing the game a lot. I mean even in progamer houses the coaches don't talk to you after each and every practice game and tell you each and every single weakness in your game.

Just like actual school, it's different for everyone. Some people can figure everything out on their own and improve by their own ways, others can really benefit from having someone point out their mistakes and how to fix them. But even in the latter case, even after you are told what the mistakes are, it takes time and practice to slowly iron out those mistakes and refine your mechanics.

I think, personally, Incontrol's lessons would be most beneficial if you're someone who just seems to be stuck at a certain level on ICCUP after playing a TON of games, and you just CANNOT figure out what you're doing wrong. Then he can point out the major flaws and can give you a set of guidelines as to how you can fix those flaws, and then with those ideas in mind you should be able to slowly fix those mistakes and push up the ranks.

That's my two cents.

This is a good question, unfortunately there is no "rule" on this for development. Each person learns at a different pace. I have one student who has played bw for maybe 6 months and was quite unskilled at the game but after 4 sessions or so he has figured out macro for the most part and was always kinda fast so he is now maxing a protoss army at 15min mark or faster and with that kind of macro he is kinda good at all 3 mu's heh.

There have been developments like this all over the board but there have been others who have taken longer to make smaller strides. It comes down to the student, their problems with scbw, and how much they practice between sessions with the information given/concepts discussed.

This tourney will offer you a better idea of how far some have come. Obviously you won't know their starting abilities but you will get an idea of where they are gaming at and perhaps the interviews will answer your questions at a more in depth level.
