Just an idea: I think it might be interestng to have the final winner have a match (maybe bo3/bo5) vs you in the end. Sort of like the best student vs master type of thing, although I don't know exactly how low/high the skill level is of the players you're teaching.
Good luck with the coaching.

That isn't a bad idea at all but for this tourney I think I will allow the students to combat.
And you can remove the "if you are going through with this" it has been in the planning stages for over 2 weeks hehe.. it is certainly happening!
The tourney will have some pretty high level matches if I might say so myself. I don't like to name names when it comes to my students but rest assured the quality will be high. Especially at the upper levels of the tourney.

Cool, now you'll have to edit yours to correct the edit I made in my first post.

I will not lose this tournament...
+ Show Spoiler +what's that saying about you're a winner if you have fun?

Congrats on the progress of this endeavor. It would be interesting to see the improvement rate of the students, via iccup ranks, to get an idea on exactly how beneficial it is to the average student. Anyways, props on the work done so far.

absolutely, Time to go into uber practice mode!

Sounds like an awesome idea for a tournament.

Now I wish I had the money to be your student :D
Good luck to the participants!

What's the best way to play vs a 12 hatch when you open 12pool/12gas/12expo in ZvZ?
|
I have been following ur blogs and I am interested how much ur students actually students actually get better iccup rank wise. Lets say 20h amount of coaching will get u were, etc ? Compered to regular gaming.
I am not potential student I am just wondering. Customer reviews didnt really tell anything.

When you get caught opening 12 pool vs 12 hatch you need to take a risk or two to equalize the openings. I will usually make a pair of zerglings or so to force them to think I am making more and then I will drone behind them. This is dangerous however because they will have more larvae available to them so you need to play it right and keep them on the defensive.
Some ways of doing this are: keeping the lings OUTSIDE making him think they might be a part of a larger group or at least wanting to counter. Additionally you will probably need a sunk and to switch over to lings at the natural if he goes heavy ling. Use drones in conjunction with said forces for defense when the time comes as you will most likely be a few behind. But sunk+positioning + workers SHOULD hold it off if you matched the lings enough. The idea here is that you force him to go ling heavy while you sneak a drone or two and equalize the economy.
The most important thing is to not panic though. Yes their opening is better but NO you are not dead yet. Try and get a drone in or two on them and rely on the distances between bases to make up the ling difference.

Lessons are mostly to tell you any major glaring flaws in your gameplay, tell you how to fix those flaws, but then you have to fix those flaws on your own time. It's really helpful for people who have played like 500 games but are still D-. Such players probably are doing something really fundamentally wrong and some tips can really benefit them.
There is no substitute for actually playing the game a lot. I mean even in progamer houses the coaches don't talk to you after each and every practice game and tell you each and every single weakness in your game.
Just like actual school, it's different for everyone. Some people can figure everything out on their own and improve by their own ways, others can really benefit from having someone point out their mistakes and how to fix them. But even in the latter case, even after you are told what the mistakes are, it takes time and practice to slowly iron out those mistakes and refine your mechanics.
I think, personally, Incontrol's lessons would be most beneficial if you're someone who just seems to be stuck at a certain level on ICCUP after playing a TON of games, and you just CANNOT figure out what you're doing wrong. Then he can point out the major flaws and can give you a set of guidelines as to how you can fix those flaws, and then with those ideas in mind you should be able to slowly fix those mistakes and push up the ranks.
That's my two cents.

This is a good question, unfortunately there is no "rule" on this for development. Each person learns at a different pace. I have one student who has played bw for maybe 6 months and was quite unskilled at the game but after 4 sessions or so he has figured out macro for the most part and was always kinda fast so he is now maxing a protoss army at 15min mark or faster and with that kind of macro he is kinda good at all 3 mu's heh.
There have been developments like this all over the board but there have been others who have taken longer to make smaller strides. It comes down to the student, their problems with scbw, and how much they practice between sessions with the information given/concepts discussed.
This tourney will offer you a better idea of how far some have come. Obviously you won't know their starting abilities but you will get an idea of where they are gaming at and perhaps the interviews will answer your questions at a more in depth level.
