Well, I suppose I could start with this... I went to the most amazing concert last night. Holy shit. If you don't like metal just skip this paragraph. So, me and 4 friends went to see Between the Buried and Me at Sonar in Baltimore. They are by far one of my favorite bands of all time, and seeing them live is always fucking amazing, no surprise there. However, the 3 openers were insane as well. Scale the Summit, Devin Townsend, and Cynic. Unfortunately we were late and missed Scale the Summit and Devin Townsend, but I've listened to their music enough to kind of imagine what it would have been like. Cynic, on the other hand was absolutely RIDICULOUS. I had never heard of these guys and they managed to land 2nd place to Between the Buried and Me? I was astounded at how good they were. Everything was fucking SICK. Of course, doing some research led me to find that their front man/musical director (Paul Masvidal) played with none other than fucking DEATH back in the 90s (another one of my favorite bands, R.I.P Chuck Schuldiner). They played a 45-minute set, which consisted of about 7 songs, and it was amazing. I've been really into prog lately, and these guys I feel push the prog metal genre to new heights. Wow, so anyway.. then BTBAM took the stage, and... wow I thought the last time I saw them they were unstoppable, and they managed to top that performance this time. They played for an hour and a half non-stop, playing mostly their new stuff (Obfuscation, Swim to the Moon, Ants of the Sky, etc..), but they threw in some olllld stuff too (More of Myself to KILL, amazing song). These guys are like, technically perfect. So anyway, I was sick unfortunately (still am) but I stayed in the mosh pits anyway because they were insane. Sonar is a very tiny place and like every inch of this place was packed full of people. During the encore song (White Walls.. 14 minutes of fucking awesome) the crowd went INSANE. There were like 20 people crowd surfing simultaneously and about 5 different mosh pits. White Walls has a very melodic section for about 4 minutes that leads up into one of the most awesome breakdowns ever... so during the 4 minutes everyone was just getting ready (step out of this closed off circle...repeat repeat repeat, then he says get out of this closed off circle INSIDE (inside is screamed))... the entire crowd jumped in the air simultaneously and just went fucking insane. I have never felt such energy at a concert before. Ahh man good times.

That was a bit... long-winded. In other news, following up my last blog (http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?id=109437) I did it... and shit ended up great. No one at work cares (get a little teasing but it's whatever) and the girl turned out to be awesome. She's into nerdy things and we've actually watched some starcraft together lol. And well, we're sort of dating but both of us have relationship issues so we don't really talk about it.. it's kinda interesting, but whatever (btw fuck you arb). Turns out she's a great cook and makes me food (fucking awesome), and she even cleaned my room (also fucking awesome). But yeah, we have a lot of fun together.. not going into too much detail here.
Work has also been great, everyone I work with is cool as shit (I went to above concert with people from work), and I feel like I'll probably have lasting friendships from this place , which... is almost impossible for me normally. The pay sucks, but the people are awesome, which is way more important at this stage in life (and I have a side project that makes me decent money, so whatever).
A guy I work with is an insane drummer, and we have very similar tastes in music, so we're talking about starting a band, which is something I've wanted to do for a long time, and tried a few times but it's always failed because of lack of similar tastes. We also met a sick guitarist the other day who's interested in joining as well, so that's good, all we need is a singer/bassist and we'll be good to go. On a side note: I've actually rediscovered playing guitar. I used to play classical guitar quite well, but I had serious wrist issues which forced me to give up playing, and I never had the drive again. But, being around all this musical stimulation (talking, concerts.. etc) I actually want to play again, which honestly feels like my life has meaning again.
And, finally, school. Finishing up 2 degrees next semester which is going to be the most amazing feeling (computer science/math if anyone is interested). Too bad they're only associates degree's but I'm excited nonetheless. I was going to TU but my college fund ran dry and my student loans got declined, so I had to go back to community college for a year to get everything settled. In the spring I may go back to TU to finish up my BS degrees (would take another year and a half... ugh) or maybe go into the military, I don't really know yet. All I know is, for the first time in 15 years of going to school I can see an end in sight (albeit, a temporary one) and that feels great. I eventually intend on getting a masters at least in computer science and possible a phd, but I fully intend on starting a career or doing SOMETHING first/in tandem with.
I'm really tired and sick atm, and I'm gonna go sleep now. Thanks for reading this long rambling bullshit if you did. Peace.

Haha if anybody knows TL blogs, it's that whenever a "life is good" blog comes, a "life sucks" blog is bound to follow
However, still nice to hear.
|
(huge metal fan) wow is this like a tour or something? i got to see scale the summits with dream theater last august, they're absolutely insane. it kind of sucks because they open first and have NO space on the stage, and they really deserve more given how skilled of musicians they are and do you have any idea if devin townsend was playing any of his SYL stuff?
|
Cynic is a well known band of something like fusion-death metal... is more fusion that prog or tech... but anyways who cares about genres nowadays... they had two edited albums... one back on 93 i think, and the other last year i think... external link... check that page if you dont know it yet... + Show Spoiler +http://www.bnrmetal.com/v2/bandpage.php?ID=Cyni you see masvidal played in gordian knot too, prog metal band (no voice) very good band... anyway i've never heard of your main band xd...
edit: metalcore ughhhhhhhhhhh

lol what is fusion about cynic? >.<

first album is so "jazzy"....

Dude I appreciate BtBAM SO much but I never listen to them i dont know why... I saw them live one time before I knew about them and it was a REALLY good show. For anyone who listens to metal you understand that bands you havent heard generally suck ass the first time you see them but damn they were good!!
Great blog it seems like you have your life together.
Careful though, what goes up must come down.

yeah ive been listening to cynic all day, nothing jazzy about first album. traced in air is more jazzy than first album.
btw arb that was mostly a joke because of your very angry post in my last blog (on page 3 iirc) s'all good.
and yeah, btbam fucking kicks ass and anyone who says they're metalcore should be shot in the face. seriously. one of the best live bands i've ever seen. scale the summit is awesome and i really wish i hadn't missed them. devin townsend (from videos on internet) played a little bit of everything, and did a lot of comedy lol. and yes, this is a tour going on.. dates can be found...http://www.myspace.com/betweentheburiedandme there, but they're moving to europe soon and staying there for the rest of the tour lol. but yeah, tickets were only 16 bucks and it was well worth it JUST to see btbam, nevermind the other AWESOME bands on the ticket (cynic was amazing, very proggy but very good if you're into that). Oh, and masvidal was in gordian knot too? that's awesome I didn't know that. anyways...

|
i like some of the stuff off the devin townsend project series of albums he's doing
|
I voted yes, does that improve my liquibet at all? No? ... oh well. Glad things have turned out well for you dude. Also, METUL \m/
|
Thanks for mentioning Cynic, now I got a good new band to listen to!
I'm happy things are looking great for you. Enjoy it, it's one of those periods in life you're going to remember with awe when you look back.

OMFG
I SAW THE EXACT SAME TOUR SHOW IN SAN DIEGO WITH MY FRIENDS
AND IT WAS THE MOST FUCKING AMAZING CONCERT EVER
it was my first time hearing any of the bands other than btbam.
devin townsend is a great showman, he brings life onto the stage.. and he has a GREAT voice and very smooth transition between growl/screams and cleans
cynic was incredible... i really need to check them out more... very technical, great atmosphere-setting music.
by then, the crowd was enthusiastic...
but the moment btbam opened up with obfuscation, PEOPLE WENT FUCKING NUTS!!! i almost lost my shoes like 3 times and my glasses countless times, but my god it was amazing!!!! every time i listen to that song and hear "THIS IS WHAT WE CALL A BRAAAAAIN" i relive the charged moments of the concert.... everybody was pushing, shoving, and i used that to my advantage to get to the 2nd row from the front.... and my god it was incredible!!!! between devin and cynic, i was telling my friend "dude" i wanna hear ants of the sky live soooo bad... cuz I got into btbam probably a year ago, after colors was out for a bit (and consequently missed the colors tour)... AND THEY HEARD MY WISH!!!! my heart leaped with joy as they announced that they were gonna play ants, and it was fucking epic!! SLEEEEP ON, FLY ON, IN YOUR MIND, YOU CAN FLYYYYYY~~ SLEEEP ON, FLY ON, IN YOUR MIND, YOU CAN FLYYYYYYY!! always gets stuck in my head. im not as partial to their first album, so more of myself to kill wasnt as exciting for me (but still good!). alaska was an unexpected treat and was sick to hear live. and of course, EVERYONE wanted to hear swim to the moon live... who the fuck DOESNT wanna hear a 18 minute long btbam masterpiece?? and lo and behold, they play it for us! i was going so crazy that i had to stop jumping/cheering/rocking out once in a while to catch my breath... and at the part where it builds up before he goes "LOOOOK INTO.. THEEE PICTUREEE"... you could feel the energy just rising for that moment in the crowd. the song ended, and they went offstage, and everyone was going fucking crazy for 1 more song.... and the gods answered our call, and came back to encore with........ WHITE FUCKING WALLS!!! like, swim to the moon, the white walls right after? THATS ALMOST TOO MUCH EPICNESS FOR MORTALS TO BEAR!! and omg, seriously, theres so many parts of that song i just LOVE.... *step out. of this. closed off. circle. we are. part of. we are. part of. get. out. of. this. closed. off. circle. get. out. of. this. closed. off. circle AH CIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRCCCCCCCCCC!!!!*insert fucking sick breakdown*"THIS IS ALL WE HAAAAAAVE WHEN WE DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIE" we will be remembered... FOOR THIS!!! *breakdown* WHIIIIIITE WALLLLLLLLLS!!!!! WHIIIIIIIIIITE WALLLLLS, CMON!!! WHITE WAAAALLLS! WHITE WAAAALLLLLLLS!!!! *insert fucking epic instrumental break*
i saw them for the pre-misdirect tour in san fran, where i also had the privilege of white walls closure... but the crowd was soooo much weaker than at the san diego show.... it was just soooo amazing being surrounded by hundreds of people that were so into it
my only complaints were that 1 - they didnt play a feed from cloud mountain.. the 2nd half where they go "WEEEE MUST MOOOOVE ONNNNNN" is one of my favorite parts from the album... but im guessing that cuz it goes up to a full voiced, non-light sounding high A in the vocals, tommy didnt do it... when i heard him go up to the high A full voiced in all bodies, his voice was dying on it... not to mention he has to repeat it several times... but i was MORE than happy with the setlist they played.... obfuscation -> disease injury madness -> ants of the sky -> more of myself to kill -> alaska -> swim to the moon -> white walls.
2 - whenever they play white walls live nowadays, tommy doesnt finish with the keyboard outro....it just feels incomplete without that descent into the octave leap at the end :/
but these are small matters..... BTBAM FUCKING ROCKS!!!!
did you get any merch off of them?

hahaha, i was just praying they'd play mordecai. that song live would be ridiculously epic. but yeah, WHIIITTEE WALLLLSSS was fucking amazing, second time I've seen that song live and it's great. the crowd was sooooo insane. I didn't get any merch stuff cuz I'm fucking broke at the moment, and i already have 2 shirts of theirs. They played all bodies for you? lucky. Ants of the Sky was fucking awesome as well..
I was verrry pleasantly surprised with cynic. i was really wishing I could see scale the summit cuz their instrumentals are fucking epic on cd and I've heard great things. Devin Townsend is.. Devin Townsend lol, coulda gone either way, but he's fucking awesome.
In any case I've been a fan of BTBAM since silent circus so I really wish they'd play more silent circus/btbam. I mean, I realize it was only an hour and a half long set, but they coulda thrown one or two old songs in, especially cuz they're shorter than their new songs (5-8 minutes compared to 9-18 lol). but i digress, they're fucking amazing either way.
