From my last blog, you can pretty figure out that I have very low self confidence (but I have read Travis' post). But I have been thinking that I have some over confidence in me. An analogy is when people say "ack bad macro" when they lose countless games, rage and never get past D+ or something. They overconfident in the fact that they can macro, but they never improve.

But I am confused: how can you be over confident AND have low self confidence at the same time? If it is then I believe im a classic example.

Basically he's saying when you play SC and aren't up to par on something (i.e. macro, rine splitting, reaver micro, whatever), but you think you're just fine at it, then you won't improve.

I do this a lot, like I think my macro is just fine, but it could definitely use some refinement. I need to work on a lot of little things that I don't think matter all that much when in fact that's how you get better.

That's not overconfidence, that's being dumb.

Its like having an inferiority complex but it manifests itself as a superiority complex perhaps? Like when someone feels out of control so they overcompensate by being really controlling.

I'd work on building your confidence. Just do small things that make you proud or happy or accomplished. Try to get more friends. Be around people that you can be "yourself" with. Worked pretty well for me.

Well... imo they're both just a kind of low self confidence. When you say you're overconfident when you don't improve, perhaps you're just not confident enough with yourself to admit when you're doing something wrong. Take Day[9]'s casts about himself... he loves to point out his errors in them, but he's a very confident guy. He's comfortable enough to know and admit his mistakes and change them. Perhaps you aren't?

I'm not sure if it's overconfidence in this context, maybe just being lazy?

Don't feel bad (assuming English isn't your 1st language) because he didn't say it very clearly at all...

OP: I know what you're talking about I think. Even if overall you lack self-confidence you can still be overly confident in certain areas and in certain situations.

Interesting thread.

After thinking about it, I believe it revolves around confidence, knowledge and the balance between those two things.

1°) While one doesn't know shit, he still can be very confident. It's easier to make a choice, less options to chose from, or he can just act. That "fake" or "naive" confidence makes him very annoying for the wise.

He can also be more shy, less confident. He doesn't know shit, after all. This humility is easier to accept.

2°) On the other hand, if one does know his shit, you expect him to be confident about it. He's the man, after all. So his display of confidence, supported by his knowledge, is accepted.

But when said person appears not confident, it's also annoying for everyone (him included) because his behavior weakens his words/actions.

Hope it, somehow, makes sense.

You feel confident about your abilities as a gamer but when you have no faith in winning against better people but when you lose to someone you think you should have beat than you blame it on the first excuse that comes to mind but not the fact you were noobier

there might be another reason not mentioned here:
if you have low self confidence it gets easier to put everyone else down. its sort of a way to manage your low self confidence by falsly raising it.

could also be projection (psychological term)

You compensate for your low self-esteem and put up a facade to the world. It's not real and cracks easily.

I'd say you just feel defensive and want to hide your insecurities by acting like you don't have them, which might result in arrogance (though that's a strong word). I'd say to overcome your problem you need to build up your confidence, by acquiring new skills, or performing better on your tasks, or even by figuring out who you are (corny, sorry). Anyways, this blog I read, facingtheworldbook.com, talks about situations like yours and how to overcome them. Maybe the writer can offer you a few tips since he's researched a ton on the subject. Hope this helps

I remember something that's describes this, finally found it.

Dunning-Kruger effect

This leads to a perverse result where less competent people will rate their own ability higher than more competent people. It also explains why actual competence may weaken self-confidence because competent individuals falsely assume that others have an equivalent understanding.

See also Downing effect and illusory bias/superiority bias/illusory superiority

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illusory_superiority

Edit: and here's a part accusing you of being nerd with adjustment problems
A longitudinal study found that self-enhancement biases were associated with poor social skills and psychological maladjustment.

I don't think the example is really explained so well. You mean that you're over confident in your ability to outsmart your opponent and so you tell yourself it must be macro? This is more an example of taking an easy way out than of over confidence imo, but i guess is still in some way over confidence.

I've only taken one psych course, so someone may correct me here but, as far as i know your brain is extremely complex and it could very easily teach itself into somehow rewarding thoughts that mask your lack of confidence through an illusion like this. Your brain does a lot of predicting rewards and then giving actions higher priority that give it more rewards (through neurotransmitters that are pleasureable)

confident people are fully aware of all of their strengths and weaknesses and are okay with them all

insecure people either a. only think about their weaknesses or b. dont acknowledge them at all and only focus on one area where they are confident
why so 진지해?
