Hey guys,
in 2010 I finally decided to get serious on learning Korean. I'm currently teached by a friend and famous Teamliquid user :p! As for now I can read quiet a bit and also write. The main problem is that I lack vocabulary right now I guess, and that Korean has so many out of the rule stuff. (exceptions for the lose;)
If anyone here speaks Korean fluently, please write something and I'll romanize it and the other way around, you can also put the translation in spoilers if you want and don't mind :-)! I'd love to work hard to improve fast.
Edit: Since I'm at work right now I can only read and translate from Korean to English, because I can't type Korean at work.

sad that i can only read names...

I'm korean and I can READ, WRITE, and TALK in Korean. The sad thing is my vocabulary is so limited I don't know what I'm reading, I can't write anything I don't know, and I'm forced into Konglish(Korean + English fill ins) to make up for the words I don't know.
Sad sad life... one of these days I'll get it

새 (in this case) = bird 한 (in this case) = one 마리 = ending used when describing how many animals there are

Already fixed I think. ㅎ is H ㄱ is G or sometimes K (when romanizing) How do you think its overall~ I'm trying to read since like 2 days now.
|
po-ghi-hae? I think its po-gi-hae? ; Why is there an additonal H.
|
gi = ghi, well close enough, I think he put the extra h in to emphasize the fact that it's a "short i" not a "long i".
po ghi hae = poh ghi hae = po gi hae... whatever, I give up! xD

the h is silent and most of the time you'd romanize it as gi anyway.

Well there's no h typed.. so I would not romanize one haha. But thanks for the clarification. :-)!

I want to learn how to read and type Korean. Hopefully I will have the time and motivation to learn like you Naruto.

Its actually not too hard to read and write, learn the alphabet and you are good to go, at least most of the time-___-;

Romanizing Korean is terrible, don't do it.
IF for some reason you still want to do it, please follow the official rules: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revised_Romanization_of_Korean
There's really not point in romanizing if you don't follow the rules. How are you supposed to check if it's right if everyone has their own system?
If you want to practice romanizing I suggest using this site: http://www.kawa.net/works/ajax/romanize/hangul-e.html
The site will automatically correctly romanize Korean for you. But I'm not sure why you'd want to practice this.

Haha marc-___-; I know its terrible, but its the easiest way to let someone confirm if you are correct.. I mean. Lets take "열심히 해" for example. I can't just say, hey does "열심히 해" mean "열심히 해" I have to somehow confirm its correct. (yeol simhi hae??).-_-
I know I need to learn these rules you already told me^^!
Edit: I want to romanize just to get used to the letters :-)

This is also good I think.

You got most of the second line correct. And yea it's "ollin"(basically korean way to say all-in..he's saying he's going to go all-in on his exercises tomorrow to make up for eating that much in the korean restaurant lool)and that last part was meant to be the curse word in korean "shipal" not some random number he decided to stick in there. Basically if u understand the context of the sentence u know that "18" is there cuz he's dreading having to exercise tomorrow but I can see why u missed it since u didn't understand the sentence.
edit: after re-reading my post i feel like I'm going too deep into the explanations and if it feels like I'm stating the obvious..just tell me to stop and i will lol. but i wasn't sure whether or not u understood the full meaning of what he wrote so I wanted to tell u as specifically as possible. And I find translating to be really fun and sometimes i get too into it :x

Out of curiosity, what are the Korean learners in this thread's motivations for learning Korean?
I'm not being sarcastic or anything, I think it's really admirable to learn new languages, I'm just curious. Planning on moving there to work? Enjoy their shows/movies/music a lot? Korean relatives? Just like the language itself?

Korean is syllable based, while German/English are word based. I find it really interesting and think Korean sounds really good. I'd like to learn Russian too O_O.

The site zatic posted is really really good, but one thing REALLY confuses me there. They are saying: 근 = gun/kun and 는 nun
I for my part think it has to be geun/keun and neun. Just like this 한글 would mean hangeul and not hangul. Shouldn't you use ㅜ as u?;
|
Korea (South)17174 Posts
neither are right
only can the true pronunciation be written with korean characters, not romanticized, whether or not its gun or geun is always up to the site and or person based on how fucking retarded they are
|
Zurich15315 Posts
The site just uses a different romanization system. There are several system, one of which (the one you are refering to) is the official one, as in sanctioned by the Korean government. If that is confusing all the more reason to drop romanization. It really doesn't get you anywhere. Get some (audio) material to learn how to pronounce hangul, the romanization can't teach you pronunciation anyway. Then learn the actual language from material in hangul.

whats the difference between 이/가 and 은/는 markers? i know 이/가 is supposed to be used for subjects but half the time it seems like 은/는 is used pretty much the same way
|
On January 14 2010 20:00 IdrA wrote: whats the difference between 이/가 and 은/는 markers? i know 이/가 is supposed to be used for subjects but half the time it seems like 은/는 is used pretty much the same way
From a Korean on a forum:
이/가 put emphasize on the next word(a verb, a noun, an adjective), and -은/는 put emphasize on the subject. 한국말이 *재미있어요*. Korean is INTERESTING. *한국말*은 재미있어요. KOREAN is interesting. These above aren't very natural to say by theirselves as the two words are emphasized with no giving the context.
이것이 *연필*이에요. This is A PENCIL. *이것*은 연필이에요. THIS is a pencil.
Korean speakers don't always use postpositions. Just know some situations you should use it. When you introduce yourself to people, "저는 Avann이예요." is most natural. By now, you'd know '는' emphasizes '저' in it. To put emphasize on something earns a profit in general. Getting attention from other people. And if you're going to say something opposite to what someone has said right before you speak, using one of postpositions would make your Korean shine. A : Who broke this? 이거 누가 깨뜨렸어? (to B)You did it, right? 네가 그랬지? B : I didn't do it. 내가 안 했어. If B answered "난(나는) 안 했어.", this implies someone else did it. Hope this helps.
