Hello teamliquid!
My current job is providing quite the complex for me in my current situation. I work for a small irrigation store, making minimum wage, while going to college full time. I have been working at this small shop, as the only employee, for roughly 18 months now.
During this time, I have asked for increases in pay, but due to the small profit margins of the shop, they were unable to do so. I can understand this with the current situation of the economy, but something else came up that really discouraged me. I received no Christmas bonus this year, while I did get one the year prior. I understand bonuses are just that, bonuses, but this really got under my skin considering the length of time I have worked there, and the things I do for the business
I am basically on call for this business, and do everything they ask me to do with a smile on my face. I have only called in one sick day as well for the entire time I have been employed at this location.
I know jobs are slim at the moment, especially in the small town I live in, but should I begin looking for another job? Would love feedback. Thanks

secretly begin looking for another job, once you have some fallback plans tell them straight up u need some sort of pay increase of you're quitting, give them a direct non negotiable number too
do not approach the situation as if you're angry or irritated or anything, just state that you have needs and if they are not met you will go where you can find them
if they give you bullshit excuses and don't give you what you want, quit (but still give them time)
if you don't hear from them for a few days take ur new job
thats what i would do, i've only worked one normal job in my life though lol

i think Rekrul pretty much summed it up.
it depends on where you live, what are you capable of doing and how much time can you spend without money.
maybe the reason why they didn't give you the bonus is because they think you will never quit (even tho i doubt that).

A buddy of mine has worked about 5000 hours (4-5 years) at his family shop, as a butcher/cleaner/accountant/cashier and doesn't get paid.
I'd just look for a new job while working that one, and when you find a better one just do it.

fuck them. they are getting proffits with your work anyway.

Rekrul gave the best advice.
Do not approach the situation from the stand point of anger. Right now the market is really, really bad and it's probably not going to get better until late next year at the earliest (Bernanke's economic forecast calls for yet more small banks to go under in 2010).
If you plan to jump ship, make sure you have another job lined up first. Because once you quit a job, you should never go back. That's called career suicide.
Rekrul's advice of calmly asking for more pay once you have another job opportunity lined up is also good. You can make the businesses compete for your labor. And if the job you are currently at truly values your work, they will find a way to offer you more.
