Losing Internet Connection

Id say the past several months anytime I download a bunch of files at one time (say a dvd off rapidshare) my connection craps out and the cable modem dies for like 2-3 minutes. I think its been doing this since I installed a new router like 6 months ago. Any ideas on what the problem could be? Its incredibly annoying. It doesnt happen EVERYTIME but id say its >50% when downloading like 5-6 files at a time. I dont seem to have the problem when only downloading 1 file.

Id say just recently in the past week or 2 Ive been randomly getting lag in BW games too. The router/cable modem dies for like 10-15 secs then comes back.

I have a Linksys WRT160NV3 with a Comcast Cable Modem. I never had a problem like this with my old router but it just started to die and my parents lost their wireless signal downstairs all the time so I bought this new one. Ive put up with this problem but im just sick of it and want to see if I can fix it.

Thanks for any help. Ive tried looking on google but cant seem to find anything that would directly answer the problem.

I guess start with the obvious stuff like restarting it, unplug the modem and router for about 5 mins then plug them back in. Try changing your wireless channel as well, maybe a neighbors cordless phone or microwave or something is interfering with your wireless.

My router is connected directly to my computer. Ive tried unplugging the modem and stuff and it doesnt seem to work. Sorry I probably should have specified that in my OP =-)

i've actually experienced this. my wireless network would go out every time someone used the microwave in our house and it took weeks until i was able to figure it out and buy a new microwave.

Connect directly to your cable modem to find out whether its the modem or the router. You should see lights turn off if its the router. Then if this is the case call Cogeco and get a service call because its their issue not yours.

Figure out which one it is, they're two very seperate things. Or don't, it's almost certainly your router anyway.

Could try updating your router's firmware, if you haven't already. That said, cheap home-use routers aren't generally masterpieces of design and aside from that they don't exactly go through rigorous quality control tests, so it might just be a bad router. :/

I actually think this is something Comcast is doing. It has been happening to me also, as well as to most of my friends who use Comcast in my area.

If you didnt have this problem before but had the same company then its a bad router. Depending on how long ago you got it you can call and have them fix or replace it free of charge.

I say it's probably interference. 2.4ghz cordless phones are really popular for some reason and that operates at the exact frequency of most cable modems. Because of that you can get a lot of noise which can mess up your shit. Also microwaves and blenders do the same thing.
