I'm really quite lost here, and i have no idea what to look around for. I know absolutely nothing about these newfangled gadgets, and would like some suggestions on what to buy. I play to be buying this on or around black friday because the prices are always so great.
The only requirements are that the hard drive is fairly large (I've currently got 59.1gb of music and 35gb of movies) So 100GB+ would be great, And also that the price not be rediculous. I can do about ~200 USD at the max, but after that it's just kind of stupid.
Suggestions? Edit: Also, i don't give a fuck about being able to call people while playing super nintendo emulators and downloading porn. I just want to be able to listen to music+watch movies.

Ipod Classic can come in a 120-160 GB harddrive that isnt too bad but Ipods are somewhat overrated.
Zune has a 120 GB media player that also nice, probably be able to find it for a lower price than the ipod but expect somewhat less support.
http://www.bizrate.com/mp3-media-players/archos-5-250-gb-internet-media-tablet--pid982748040/ The archos is a favorite of mine, but its also the most expensive and somewhat out of your price-range. This is the 250GB monster, so you might be able to find it with a smaller harddrive for cheaper. It has a bunch of options and extras that the others don't, internet access for example.

Your finding were about the same as mine. I guess i'm going to buy the 160gb classic, because i'd rather the extra 40gb of space for only $5 more than the zune.
If anyone has any better deals, please post them! :D

The archos is up for 240 USD on amazon, you just gotta love em. http://www.amazon.com/Archos-250-Internet-Media-Tablet/dp/B001D0E4DA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1258709535&sr=8-1
Pretty average customer reviews though

You have to consider screen size too though the Zune is 3.2 inches and the classic is 2.5 Yeah but 40 gb for 5 usd difference is worth it

i feel so out of touch with technology these days, i've been using my 2gb ipod nano for four years.

The Zune's screen is much superior to the IPOD classic's screen if you want to want videos.

I bought my 80g for the same price and literally 2weeks after they came out with the 100 or 120. Made a fella quite angered.

For me personally such a huge capacity isn't 100% important. I figure, I can keep my library on a netbook/laptop or even at home, and copy whatever i am interested in right now. Granted, having it all in the player is better, just not that much better that I'd give up small size and light weight or pay too much for it. I also like the idea of players with removable flash card storage, with SDHC at 32GB and the micro versions at 16GB that gives plenty of space, and i can even carry several with me and swap them out - unlimited storage. Would've been good if I knew of some gadget or case to keep the spares in without losing them or messing up which is which.
For me there are more important features though, namely synchronized lyrics display for the songs, browsing both by filesystem and by tags, supporting unicode text everywhere, and both on the go and on the pc playlist editing and saving. Simple things, I thought, but turns out there really aren't any candidates to provide them to me. It's been a while since I last took a look at buying a player though, maybe there are some good options now? Especially the first point seems to be disappointingly rare... maybe I am just one of a few weird guys that want it?
I am also interested in some more unusual features, ideas for which have been floating around for a long time, but i've not seen them in products. Players that can act as usb host devices, so you can plug external usb devices such as other players to copy files over seem like a nice idea, great way for sharing music on the go if you don't have your laptop. Even better if it could play the music directly from the external storage device without copying. Players that can exchange files over bluetooth or wifi are also interesting, and for wifi even more so if they could connect directly without requiring an access point. Players that can use wifi or 3g internet access to fetch lyrics, info or even whole new songs, and allow normal web browsing as a side bonus can also be a great hit - I guess that's finally been covered by the new zunes and ipod touch players.
I have decided that I will buy a Zune HD as soon as it hits our god-forgotten country, but I don't even know if it has the features that I want in a player yet - I will be buying it mainly because I am interested in developing apps for it.

A lot of the time these things can be less obvious than they appear.

also, you know on black friday, most of the time selected models are on sale. you dont get to pick and choose to see whats cheap.
cowons have the best sound quality hands down. they also have a very good touchscreen for video and they play all different codecs (flac, avi, mp3, etc etc etc) dont go with an ipod unless you go with a classic, buy the adapter so you dont use the headphone jack and an external amp.

How do you think I felt when I bought my first gen Zune for $260.
But regardless of that, Zune software is quite annoying, but the player is reliable as shit. People who bitch about how "big" it is or how there is no touch circle shit are faggots. Really. Suck it up. I think Zune is so much better than the iPod.

Cowon A3 sounds close to what you're looking for. It has a few quirks though.
