So I'm here, working on setting my a server for my parents office. As for a certain server program, the permissions have to be set differently. Due to operating system + software issues, I had to do it manually...
As I'm sitting there, I make the worst typo of my life: sudo chown -R fmserver / *Presses Enter*
So...... Yeah. If you don't really get it, bottom line, I blew up all the permissions on the entire server, and right now I'm hoping and waiting for the permissions repair to work. If not... FML.

At least it wasn't an rm -rf.

sudo rm -rf fmserver would have been worse =)

Something where FML actually fits pretty good.

Technically, it's FileMaker Server, but I 100% support and prefer FakeSteve's.

What I wanted to write was essentially specifying a specific folder to change permissions for. Me typing a single slash targeted my entire directory, screwing up literally every single file in my computer, setting permissions exclusively not for a user account.
What that line did was change permissions to "fmserver" for the specified directory.
rm -rf essentially means delete everything on your computer. fmserver has nothing to do with that statement.
And <3.

What happened was the permissions fixed most, but not all of them, and especially not enough to make it fully functional again. I reinstalled the operating system over a network (No CD drive, which sucks), and all the software. Fresh start + paranoia/extreme care made it all work out, except for the fact that I got home about 20 minutes ago, without a chance to start on any of the work I actually had to do for school. Worked out well, I suppose. Just didn't get a chance to play SC or CS.
