OK so recently, i've played many (i mean many) games of Starcraft, mainly as zerg. However, alot were against friends (or non-ladder/people who asked to game on TL). All is going good right, i'm improving by the week, playing at B- level in some games (and C in others).
An example: Ver (the best poster ever) and i had 2 games on heartbreak, i went in not warmed up, and thinking i'll lose since he is a rusty B player, but instead i play the games of my life and win.
Another example is playing another player (KrazyFol) Offraces (or main races, he doesn't know what to play vs z). I play games where i defend with flanks i've never done before, and somehow win, playing better than my rank suggests.
So basically, i play so well when i play non-ladder, or for practice really.. but the problem is now.
Whenever i try to ladder, i struggle so bad against the varying builds and cheeses, as most do, but not just that, what also sucks is that i, without trying, play like a fucking idiot.
If i play my standard ZvP against a C protoss friend, i'd more than likely win and do it convincingly. However, if i play a C protoss on iccup, i do so many things different without thinking and lose.
I would just like to ask one thing - do you guys find it harder to ladder over playing people non-ladder? If you find it easier to ladder, what are mind-sets you go in with?
Poll: Do you play better Laddering or Non-Laddering? (Vote): Ladder (Vote): Non-Ladder
Thanks

Just scout more. If you play the same people too often you get into really bad habits of being lazy on your scouting just because you know that person doesn't like to deviate from his normal build.

i think it was day[9] who said this but when you ladder you aren't so trying to get wins so much as prevent losses. its a totally different mindset then when playing casual games with friends. i personally think i perform better in casual games because i am not afraid to try new things, and am more confident playing someone i know.

I think your comparison is a bit unfair, you should be comparing either non-ladder 1v1s against random people vs ladder, or non-ladder 1v1s vs friends and ladder. I'm sure that the difference lies at least in part in the fact that you are playing people you know or playing multiple games.
Personally I definitely play better when the pressure is up. In practice games I almost feel like I am offracing, I just don't care. But if you place +130/-75 on the line, I feel like I play a lot better. I play best against the toughest opposition (sometimes...) and I play best when under more pressure (I am getting kinda hooked on CSL so I get really into it). I literally have not won a PvZ in a week, and the only one I won was the CSL match, and while watching the rep I saw that I played a lot better than normal.

Cam just pulls out BO luck in friendly games lol.

I play pretty bad while laddering. Generally because I cope with cheesy fairly poorly. QQ

Playing non ladder games to me is strictly playing for "fun." Without the prospect of earning points, there is no motivation whatsoever to win. Without inspiration to do well, it's hard to do great...

7 times in a row zvz?
Also Caller, that was a nice explanation.
@Fanatacist yeh it's a bit unfair, but i ment sort of like... non-ladder practice games vs ladder games vs randoms, not like vsing friends with offrace or trying new things.

I don't ladder at all anymore. So I voted non-ladder however I've always loved laddering just don't have the dedication for it currently. On an unrelated note I JUST noticed that your name is easy to mistake as camilto. JUST now.

i play ladder because there is more pressure. if i don't play ladder i start relaxing. my apm drops to like 20 and i play really retarded. before i play a game on iccup i make sure i'm ready to play a good game but if im just playing against a friend i don't really care...

Hehe an hour ago cam was telling me how he was getting rolled by mech

no it was proxy fac -> proxy 2 port wraith so my suicide ovie did nothing -> me misplacing spire and him picking it off.
I also started with 9 pool because i forgot my ovie, and he blocked... these are the things i do laddering T_T.
FML.

No, thus I won 3 of those 7 games. ;P.(LWWWLLL)
On topic, I play better on ladders because vs friends etc I generally just fuck around and try out new builds rather than playing to my strengths, and playing to win.

No, you haven't won 3 times? you actually count the one where i didnt know gas fucked up on the othello posotion and i stuffed build up from typing my rage at it, and left at 2:05? lol....
It's (for you) LWWLLLLL<--- last loss today.
And besides, your wins came from when i barely played zvz, now i've had around 100 zvz's since then (literally, playing outsider vs koreans and playing harem brings alot of zvz's.)

ive always played better laddering i think. i just do random builds i think of that will over-come cheese and do well. laddering is a really good mental exercise though, because it keeps your will power up.
