I generally don't like it when people use math symbols in normal sentences. There's no reason to write everything short hand, TL posts aren't your lecture notes...

yeah but the whole point is that the OP attaches random value to programming based inequality syntax, of which /= and <> are just as appropriate as !=. in other words they're both just as bad as using != when you're trying to reach the general public (i.e. TL) (although for me != or <> is just habit now really.. i never do =/= i think)
(\o/)  If you want it, you find a way. Otherwise you find excuses. No exceptions.

Plus =/= is understood by every1, but != only by ppl who had some contact with programming, try writing this to "casual" people (who don't know anything about programming) - they won't understand.

Good programming languages use = to test equality and := for assignment imo
However the vast majority of them (including all the ones I use frequently) use the stupid ==

in my opinion

That's some FORTRAN BS right there

I'm thinking that =/= is a placeholder for the not equal math symbol ≠ and != is read exactly how it is.

Lets see here, one requires the shift key, one requires an addition key press ... yeah I would say == is better than :=.

=/= is like any emoticon or bit of ASCII art: it's a makeshift arrangement of common characters to represent characters that are harder to type directly. It's perfectly logical, unlike your OP.

In that case you should be doing ≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠

not =/=

And once again, if i'm not programmer and my keybord DOESN'T HAVE ≠ button? But it does have = and /, hence i can make =/=
