I usually prefer silence when studying, but when I'm bored I put on instrumental stuff. Basically, anything without vocals. Someone gets singing and I am immediately distracted. =(

Also, yay for Touhou listeners!

music without vocals could be okay.

the music shouldnt be too loud either.

Perhaps not some really complicated epic music. Just some chilly sort of simple music.
Like some slow really simple piano tracks (chopin made a few of these). Or maybe some classical chamber music.

basically any instrumental type music. Or a language you cant understand lol

Overall, music does distract at least me, since i will always just drift away and start focusing on the music

I always studied while listening to music when doing classes that I just needed to practice calculations in like physics and chemistry courses. Works great keeping me somewhat entertained while doing stuff that I find pretty boring for 2-10 hours. Couldn't make it without music.

In classes like anatomy, psychology, or anything else that I need to make sense of what the book is saying I can't concentrate too well with music.

It strangely depends on the subject I'm studying for. When I learn math related things, upbeat music really helps me study and gives me this uplifting feeling whenever I understand a concept. Otherwise, like in longwinded history/biology chapters, the music can be distracting as, I'm usually bored by those things even without music and I don't need a reason to not pay attention.

I don't really pay attention to lyrics when I listen to music overall...which might be why I have such a hard time listening to more vocally oriented music.

To tell the truth, though, I don't really mind whether there's music or not. I tend to do best with post-rock or post-metal, like Russian Circles or something of the sort.

Classical, tbh, is distracting for me. It demands attention when I listen to it. I also cannot stand trance or techno of any kind.

Classical music and even the normal music I listen to (underground hip hop) has always helped me when doing work or drawing. But when I play SC any music or other noise always makes me play worse.

But i think it depends on some other factors as well, sometimes I don't wanna listen to any music at all when im doing shit on the computer and I find it really distracting to have something playing while typing forum posts (especially talk radio or something).
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

Instrumental = Good
Music with heavy lyrics = hard to concentrate

When i write code I must listen to music. This is because I need to get the curtains down so I can really concentrate. I guess earplugs might work good to

Familiar, instrumental music is hardly disruptive at all.

Unfamiliar music with lyrics is quite disruptive. Classical good, Radio bad.

Classical radio: meh

Your teacher is right, but that doesn't mean its a bad thing. Listening to the same music before you take a test or whatever can help stimulate that part of your brain to help you remember. Though try to use relaxing music, my friends did a scientific study in high school and found more relaxing music like classical helped while more erratic music like metal tended to lower scores. Of course that was just an amateur study, but they had highly contrasting test scores come from it. I never found out from them whether the individuals listening to metal actually liked it or if they were irritated by it.

As for me personally, I can't listen to music until I achieve a high level of concentration on my studying or homework. To get that I usually require a quiet environment to begin with. So I rarely listen to music as it makes it harder for me to start studying.

i can listen to any kind of music for things that require anything mindless like doing up good drafts or note taking etc. But anything that requires thinking it just seems easier to have it quiet, but that's mostly because i like to talk to myself when thinking.

I like silence when studying, but if its in an area with even a little bit of noise (like people shifting about in the school library), i'd rather be listening to music. But the music has to be music that I have listened to many times, not new music.
