Ip Man was awesome and I also recommend the good, the bad and the weird. what part of the movie is this? i must have completely missed this.

The main problem I have with this movie is that at times it adheres to realism (besides the plot, which is fine), at others it is not. For example, in the hallway fight scene, he starts wrecking house but he gets swarmed, realistic... but then they let him up, not realistic... and stab a fucking knife into his back but he continues to be able to fight somehow... not realistic. The best part of the movie is where he takes the cigarette from that street punk, and his interior dialogue goes, "can 10 years of training actually work in real life?" and then he beats all of them up, and the interior dialogue says, "apparently, it can." I mean that's fucking great stuff, and its a shame the movie didn't continue along that line. Also, at the very beginning when Dae-Su is totally drunk and in detox, that's great stuff too.

Can anyone recommend a few good ones in the same "genre"? really obvious but just in case you havent watched em: the other two movies of the vengeance trilogy The director Chan Wook Park also just released a new movie: http://uk.rottentomatoes.com/m/10011304-thirst/# seems to be a bit different though as it's a vampire movie :p cool idea though with the vampire being a priest, I'm definitely gonna watch this one. Has a pretty badass trailer at that: + Show Spoiler + CJ!!!!

Seriously, Ip Man is like a carbon copy of countless martial arts movies. Man has been wronged, must take revenge; wasn't anything original or creative about it. You could say that it was "done well", but really, there was no meat to the story and the action wasn't nearly good enough to overcome the lack of substance.

Conclude: Overall a good movie, but nothing spectacular. The plot was better than most movies though.

I might be a little biased because I love War films but who doesn't love war films? And it beats the shit out of Saving Private Ryan

Haven't seen Oldboy yet. But I'll probably take Day[9]'s seal of disapproval to heart.

Since my friends recommended the movie to me, I thought I'd ask them to explain the movie. They couldn't, which led me to the conclusion that it's just good psuedo-intellectual bait (ooh it has subtitles and some weird artsy feel to it!). Dunno, maybe the movie really is good. My Lady Vengeance was pretty cool though.

Maybe I've seen enough brutal movies since then that I would feel differently. It reminds me of Ebert's review of Aliens. I don't know how else to describe this: The movie made me feel bad. It filled me with feelings of unease and disquiet and anxiety. I walked outside and I didn't want to talk to anyone. I was drained. I'm not sure "Aliens" is what we mean by entertainment. Yet I have to be accurate about this movie: It is a superb example of filmmaking craft. By now it probably would not be considered a huge shocker of a movie, and people might also feel that its plot was predictable. Saving Private Ryan's opening scene is enough to make it a better movie than Tae guk ki, though that says more about the former than the latter. The elite north korean team meleeing the south koreans in battle broke my suspension of disbelief.
