I just recently seen this as well and liked it, but this must be the most twisted movie I have ever seen haha. I wont spoil it for anyone, but this is a great movie. I thought the story line was pretty solid and the characters did a good job.

some parts are NSFW so be careful and enjoy

Meh, it was ok. I didn't really like it that much because I completely expected the twist from the beginning. It really is over rated.
Social Justice is a fools errand. May all the adherents at its church be thwarted. Of all the religions I have come across, it is by far the most detestable.

Mainly that fight scene, the octopus scene, the music and the fact that you can hear someone playing BW at one point.

Ip Man was awesome and I also recommend the good, the bad and the weird.

what part of the movie is this? i must have completely missed this.

The first 30 minutes or so are great, but then the plot starts getting really convoluted. The motivation of Dae Su's tormentor is very lame and it takes 2 hours to get there.

The main problem I have with this movie is that at times it adheres to realism (besides the plot, which is fine), at others it is not. For example, in the hallway fight scene, he starts wrecking house but he gets swarmed, realistic... but then they let him up, not realistic... and stab a fucking knife into his back but he continues to be able to fight somehow... not realistic.

The best part of the movie is where he takes the cigarette from that street punk, and his interior dialogue goes, "can 10 years of training actually work in real life?" and then he beats all of them up, and the interior dialogue says, "apparently, it can." I mean that's fucking great stuff, and its a shame the movie didn't continue along that line.

Also, at the very beginning when Dae-Su is totally drunk and in detox, that's great stuff too.

If you take such things as plot, style (camera etc), music, creativity and acting into account, you simply cannot hold that ip man, as a movie, is better than or even close to old boy. Old boy is superior in all these aspects. Ip man is just another kungfu movie.

I love movies like this. I'm not sure how to classify them, though. Can anyone recommend a few good ones in the same "genre"?

really obvious but just in case you havent watched em: the other two movies of the vengeance trilogy

The director Chan Wook Park also just released a new movie:
http://uk.rottentomatoes.com/m/10011304-thirst/#

seems to be a bit different though as it's a vampire movie :p
cool idea though with the vampire being a priest, I'm definitely gonna watch this one.

Has a pretty badass trailer at that:

Didn't see much in Oldboy and even less in Ip Man.

Seriously, Ip Man is like a carbon copy of countless martial arts movies.
Man has been wronged, must take revenge; wasn't anything original or creative about it.
You could say that it was "done well", but really, there was no meat to the story and the action wasn't nearly good enough to overcome the lack of substance.

I saw this movie without ever having heard of it before, and I got a very positive reaction to it. I thought it was some kind of B-rated movie, but I was proven very otherwise. It had quite a few good fight scenes, but the main thing about it imo was the plot twist at the end. Never before have I seen such a sick and weird fucking twist in a movie, which left be both in disgust and a sense of awesomeness for the writer.

Conclude: Overall a good movie, but nothing spectacular. The plot was better than most movies though.

I didn't like Oldboy much either. I might not have been as disappointed as you but it was certainly not a great movie. Watch 'Seom' instead if you want a good korean movie!

I thought Oldboy was pretty crap... the plot was completely predictable, and so overly dramatic. Perhaps part the point was to be ugly and over the top, heavy handed etc to give the distasteful feeling... so I guess that was done well, but nothing else i could say was interesting about this movie.

If you guys want a good K-film, go watch Brotherhood in War (Tae Guk Ki)

I might be a little biased because I love War films but who doesn't love war films?

And it beats the shit out of Saving Private Ryan

I liked Memento.

Haven't seen Oldboy yet. But I'll probably take Day[9]'s seal of disapproval to heart.

I didn't really like Oldboy. But I didn't really understand it fully either.

Since my friends recommended the movie to me, I thought I'd ask them to explain the movie. They couldn't, which led me to the conclusion that it's just good psuedo-intellectual bait (ooh it has subtitles and some weird artsy feel to it!).

Dunno, maybe the movie really is good.

My Lady Vengeance was pretty cool though.

It was really good in a theatre. Maybe it loses something on video or a monitor. It felt like it drew me in enough that its brutality and violence made it impossible for me to find it predictable.

Maybe I've seen enough brutal movies since then that I would feel differently. It reminds me of Ebert's review of Aliens.
I don't know how else to describe this: The movie made me feel bad. It filled me with feelings of unease and disquiet and anxiety. I walked outside and I didn't want to talk to anyone. I was drained. I'm not sure "Aliens" is what we mean by entertainment. Yet I have to be accurate about this movie: It is a superb example of filmmaking craft.

By now it probably would not be considered a huge shocker of a movie, and people might also feel that its plot was predictable.

Saving Private Ryan's opening scene is enough to make it a better movie than Tae guk ki, though that says more about the former than the latter. The elite north korean team meleeing the south koreans in battle broke my suspension of disbelief.
