OK, I lied, but I did buy the three first plants for my patio today! The big ones are heliconias. The small one is a peppermint plant that I will start turning into Mojitos once it's big enough. I really like them

So question is what to get next? Only three conditions:

1) Has to be potted, my patio is all tile & gravel.
2) Has to survive in a tropical climate.
3) Has to be fairly easy to maintain. Just watering & trimming preferably.

Bonus points for anything I can turn into a cocktail later like my mint plant.

I'm not much of a gardener myself but I've heard that basil is fairly easy to grow. Not sure of the cocktail usage, but I'm sure you could find some sort of culinary use for it!

Hmm that's not a bad idea. It's native to the tropics and is tasty in pesto sauce. I'll see if they have them at the nursery near my place.

I think I'll post an updated garden in a month or so including whatever new plants I buy as the result of this thread :o

Nothing is quite as delicious as a ripe homegrown pineapple. The pineapples they sell at the store here are brown and picked prematurely. It's hard to find something like this

All you need is a pineapple top to get started

Where do you reside atm? I'm fairly certain "tropical conditions" and those (date?) palms are not native to the Netherlands

Man, that is really awesome! Not necessarily the plants, but I really like the design of your neighborhood!

I would take pictures of "my garden", but that would take like an hour cuz it's like 2 acres of it

AVOCADOS!

No really, 1) buy yourself some avocados. 2) Peel them. 3) Eat them. 4) Buy pot. 5) Put dirt in pot. 6) Hide avocado seed in dirt. 7) Add water + time = Avocado plant.

The nice thing about this is that you can watch it grow (nurture it) and you can stick the sticky tags that come on the avocados onto the pot to be like "That's where he was born" when your friends ask you about your gosu gardening skilz.

D dunno if they actually make fruit (mine didn't :[ damm infertile avocados!) but its worth a try.

Oh btw, i didn't know the netherlands had a tropical climate...

I live in Singapore now. I'm dutch but have been living outside the Netherlands for 13 years (my whole adult life).

Have also lived in the United States, Spain, Italy, and Thailand in that time.

I like this thread. Can you grow peas? I'd guess maybe no since they are native to Europe. They are easy to grow in Sweden and taste very well though

Get some orchids. They are some of the most beutiful flowers in the world. Some simple vegetable plants like cucumber and tomatoe are easy to grow too.

I love gardening n_n Try to get some other plants that are more low-lying or shrub/grass like to give some contrast and backdrop.
Peace~
