something i was talking about with mani gave me this idea, to save spam and redundancy i propose a "reccomend this post" feature for the website.
here's a link of an example of this tool in use
link
basically, the idea is when you see a post you agree with, rather than repeating that post you just "reccomend it"
so a post that 20 people agreed with would be 1 post with 20 reccomendations, as opposed to 21 posts saying essentially the same thing.
what do you guys think? i think it would really help reduce spam and rendundancy, less clutter and more room for the differing opinions isntead of pages of the same thing.

Seems pretty useful actually. Thanks a-game.

We've talked about it a bit, I think it could be useful in the Strategy forum in particular.
|
It'd be nice, but it would kill so many people's post counts.
|
the spam isnt even bad on this site, compared to gg.net and, well, like 90% of all forums ive visited
|
Good posts are already usually given credit in the next few posts, people usually already know which peoples posts to look for in a strategy thread for example.
Ones post though it might be right, or valid or whatever may not be seen as right to many people who dont understand a thing about what hes talking about, or who dont like the poster, or dont know him, whereas other posts with the same or less truthfulness could be recommended more out of bias.
Doubtful, wrong, hard to understand opinions lead to debate, which leads to a better understandment of the situation, a thread with 40 posts, with 10 of them giving out ideas and 30 of them debating their pros and cons, and reaching to a conclusion is way better in my opinion, than a thread with a single post recommended by 20 people, where the posters who dont understand or who want to add something, or whatever are afraid to post because they wont be noticed.
It wouldnt work imo, because it goes against the very essence of what a strategy forum should be, and the strategy forum is the only logical place i can think of where this could be implemented.

well on the bbcnews site that i linked for an example, i never read all the comments i just skim through them looking for the highly reccomended ones.
honestly i think 99% of posts on tl.net don't deserve to be posted or read, so if this feature can help me avoid even just a little of those crappy posts then i'd like it
it won't stop people from making bad posts, but it will allow people to skim through gigantic threads and just read the good posts.
it'll also allow me to simply reccomend those posts that i agree with, rather than adding clutter by repeating what someone else said (which happens a lot on tl.net ...)
knowing tl.net though, someone would post "LOL waffles" and then 30 people would reccomend that comment, seeing as this site has the average maturity level of a 12 year old

I think the admins/mods were discussing a post cap system. So if they recognize you as a crappy poster they'll put a cap on how many posts/day or posts/week you can do. If your posts improve then the cap will be removed but it's still just an idea.

Interesting idea with the "recommend this post" feature, thanks for posting it. There's been several similar ideas floating around over the years (this one just awhile back).
A slight disadvantage with just a simple number count though, is that you don't know who is recommending the post. And of course people often value opinions differently, depending on who's opinion it is.
A similar idea I've seen on another forum is to let user's make mini-comments on someone's post itself that show up at the bottom. Basically it just shows a little box with "username agrees" - but they also have the option to include a small sentence. Here's an example.
Anyway, fun to think about, but if I'm being honest it'll probably be a long time before anything like this gets implemented unfortunately.

no way, it'd mean so much more if posts were of quality, it's cos they're so crap and senseless so often that post-counts are so irrelevent and meaningless

i agree with the sentiments in the older thread that this idea is pointless
|
well they've been doing it on bbcnews for a long time and it's been helping me have a more concise reading experience for a long time. some of the arguments in the other thread were 'people know a good post when they see one'
true, and then they can reccomend it and the next person to read the thread won't have to sift through the junk, he can just go directly to that 'good post'
and instead of 5 people repeating the sentiments of that 'good post' it will just be 5 reccomendations on that post. i don't see how removing clutter and lessening the time it takes to read a thread is 'pointless'
in light of the new anti bad post campaign i think this suggestion fits into that scheme poignantly. that said the webmasters here work hard on a volunteer basis and that renders all suggestions of this nature superfluous
EDIT: one area that i wanted this in was the tracker thread, often times i think a lot of us want to thank the uploader for a new upload but don't want to bump/clutter the thread. i've always wanted a way to thank people for services without upping my post count or cluttering a thread. once one person said thanks, then the reccomendations could just pile on and gratitude could be shown in a very concise way.

I like the idea. Naturally if a post got a certain ammount of commendations then it would be highlighted in some way so others can see it more easily
