I hate to be the first to say it, but I blocked the image of that appeal.

I'm already paying Verizon to use the internet. I have no tolerance for ads or solicitations. If I could do something to remove annoying billboards on the road, I'd cut those too.

Your opening post has absolutely no content, and it basically belittles TeamLiquid for running all of one ad. I don't understand how this warrants a thread.

Moved to TL Community.

edit: for those not understanding what's going on, we added an image banner for those using adblock.

here is the banner in question:

yes, it's meant to emulate the jimmy wales wikipedia banners lol

So, one little ad on the top of the site is completely egregious and off putting? It's not like the entirety of the page is plastered with them and the background is change to a giant car add too.

Seeing how ads is one of the better ways a site can actually make money, since they do not charge for anything.

I actually set an exception on tl.net 'cause of this banner. I was kind of aware that there were ads on TL but never gave much thought to it 'cause... well, because I never saw them.

Sure it's a little annoying having a flashy Razer ad for products I'll never buy being beamed at me, but it's a fair price to pay for a site I visit multiple times a day IMO.

These banners are a good idea, I don't mind unblocking the adds on sites that I support.

Would you prefer that there was no team liquid? if everybody did the same as you, there may not be one, and it certainly wouldnt look as nice as it does right now.

Ads help website generate revenue, and by blocking them, you prevent that from happening.

adblocking is stupid, especially to sites you visit frequently because it's the hits on the site that generate revenue from those ads. Ads make the world go round in every case (radio, tv, internet), without them all these free things you take for granted would be no more (the internet isn't free but many of the services on the internet are).

i love the site and have had adblock turned off for TL for a while now, does it only show up if adds are being blocked or if you just have adblock installed i keep seeing it and thinking i need to turn adblock off but whenever i check it is off for TL i just need a quick clarification.

Edit: Thanks fixed it had two versions of adblock installed for some reason and only one was set to allow TL through.

The ads are sometimes fun in the blogs section though.

Like the girl threads always have like some online dating service ad on the top, or cat threads have cat-related ads.

I'm already paying Verizon to use the internet.

So am I...so are lots of people. The people who aren't are likely paying other providers for their internet. You're not paying TL to visit the site. You're not paying Verizon MORE to have or not have ads. It's a little tiny bar at the top of the site...you don't even see it 99% of the time cause you're reading a thread or posting and it's scrolled to the top of the page.

It's not even an annoying ad, like the ones on Livestream that totally block your content or anything. Just a tiny little bar that you could un-block to support Team Liquid. I guess you can't "tolerate" doing just a little bit to help TL.

If you go to the adblock dropdown you can just click "disable on Teamliquid.net" and it'll un-block on any TLnet page (so far that I've seen anyways)

Is there a way to still see the horse mascot banner up there despite disabling adblock?

I still wanna see him up there despite my removal of adblock.

And then I got this ad:

It's because of how cute that Horse is, really. Anyone who's created a banner that loveable has got to have some shred of humanity.

usually a right click on the AddBlock symbol allows you to set a Check mark in front of "Disable on Teamliquid.net"

that should do it

PS: this is the only site in the whole of the internetz where I make that exception willingly.

Always disable adblock for TL. You should do it when you're watching streams on TL too. If they don't get the money from the ads then Rich won't be able to afford his wizarding supplies.

I don't think OP understands what 'the internet' is.

I love TL and would be happy to click on whatever ad banners I find of interest to me. I would also suggest that, for additional revenue, TL open up a gamer-focused apparel and gadgety shop. I know they sell a few shirts (I have 2) and referral links on amazon -- but the scope is too narrow and the shirts are farmed out to a press-on-demand company that I'm sure makes a far to healthy cut. Now that TL is fully for profit there is no reason they can't make a little coin off us without going too overboard.

If you're using Adblock Plus on Firefox, there should be a circle that says ABP in the top right corner of the browser. Click it and check "disable on teamliquid.net" in the menu.

Can someone help me set up a way so that ABP blocks those retarded ads on the livestream, jtv, ustream, own3d.tv etc, streams if I watch them on TL, but leave TL's ad's open?

I don't mind 1 banner on TL at all, but I can't stand 30 fucking second streams getting in the way of gameplay when I'm watching stuff.

Unfortunately, I will admit it, I will not watch 30 second upon 30 second turn into hours of my time watching completely irrelevant ads on ustream and stuff in exchange for the 1 banner.

Same here, I'd gladly whitelist TL if the stream ads were still blocked because those are way too intrusive.

I tried setting it up so that it blocks on pages from teamliquid.net/video/streams/ but that actually didn't do anything T.T

I love tl and will support them, but i wont support those ridiculous ads, and each time I want ot watch a stream I don't want to have to go to the direct link sometimes.

I'll check this thread in the morning to see if anyone can help out, otherwise sorry tl =\

Nice use of the D&B horses to appeal to the user of not banning TL Ads. Don't block ads for websites that you frequent regularly, every website is entitled to cover their costs.
Venture Capital is better off spent on lottery tickets rather than investing in E-Sports; you'll get a far better return. The difference is simple: Koreans are tryharding at the game, foreigners are tryharding in real-life.

My visit still nets them pageviews, which earns them as much as they would anyways, because I never click ads. And as I use Chrome's Adblock, my browser simply hides the ad rather than preventing it from loading so if they recieve payment by ad impressions there's no change there.

In short, I'm not causing TL any more monetary loss than if I didn't run Adblock.

Zlasher - why not just go directly to livestream/ustream/jtv/etc? I usually just do that and open a new tab for TL.

Also - Ad block off for TL

I read through your post history. You've got a lot out of TL from strat section - specifically people analysing your replays and providing a platform for you to voice your opinions on balance. This isn't a service one pays for - but every ad impression contributes to the server/maintenance costs, and our ability to build new features....The sense of entitlement in this OP is astounding. Instead of banning you, why don't you just leave.

This happens if you have Javascript disabled as our ad providers use Javascript to display ads.

I use noscript as well, but if it blocks financial gain for TL then I would want to ensure ads display properly just for teamliquid.net. noscript doesn't have the option to unblock everything whilst browsing a site so that sucks. (or I suck at interpreting the option screen.)

Or are there view credits for people who script block the ads?

Unless you've never updated AdBlock, this isn't the case, if you're on version 2.0 or later then it stops it from downloading. It used to just hide them after the fact because Chrome didn't support a Javascript hook that Firefox did that let you stop resources from loading, but that got fixed a while ago.

Instead of banning you, why don't you just leave.

he was banned i just saw. Well, I guess sometimes ppl feel entitled to too much since they pay for internet access and dont understand websites arent run by the money the Service provider is given and rather that the websites need to pay for their server costs on their own.

also to anyone still reading this dont forget to add an exception to your antivirus program if it has a banner blocker I had to do it to mine so that I could support TL

Zlasher - why not just go directly to livestream/ustream/jtv/etc? I usually just do that and open a new tab for TL.

Also - Ad block off for TL

Like I stated earlier, on the regular streams I watch I will either go to www.gamescast.tv and for user streamers that I regularly follow I will go to their sites directly, but many times if there are new streamers, i thumb through ones that might be interesting at the time, being on the TL page is much easier in that sense because I can switch from pgae to page no problem, if I forced myself to watch a bit every time it'd be user stream, direct link, back to TL, user stream, direct link, back to TL, etc. Not worth the hassle.

I'd rather just go on TL, user stream, user stream, user stream, etc.

I love TL and would love to support their harmless ads since they do a great service to all of us by not throwing full page ads in our faces. Which is why I'm trying to find a middle ground to help these guys out, something that wont interrupt my daily routine

I usually just have Adblock activated, but after seeing the banner, I just had to disable it (just for TL of course). Asking to just have ads up to keep the page running isn't asking for much now, is it?

Can you clarify if TL gets income from Ad clicks or just views? I wouldn't mind clicking on a Ad once per day to support the site.

In fact I didn't even notice the thing until this post lol O.o

You realize that's what the ads on most sites are for, right?

The only ads I could ever feel justified blocking are ones that disrupt the user experience by obscuring content. There are a lot of ads like that these days but it's not anywhere close to the majority of them.

Just had an argument with someone on IRC about this topic. his reasoning behind keeping his adblock on was because he thought his "impression" (something about cost per thousand impression or something he mentioned) was so significant to the overall ad revenue that it was ok that he had it blocked.
In my opinion its this kind of self-entitled attitude that i thought wouldn't exist on TL. As though you're special enough to block ads while everyone else has them on to support your browsing of TL? It doesn't matter how often you post, but if you're getting value from this great website, and that site requests you turn off ad block, and you dont, you're a bit of a dick. Just had to get that off my chest

Obviously the 9,011 bytes was just too much for him I mean if he had a 5gig monthly cap you just used up one ten-thousandths of one percent of his cap nearly 2 ten-thousandths of one percent if you round up!

As long as teamliquid doesn't make the white space that fills the sides of this site fill with ads, which would only be bad if you could accidentally click them which all ads are, i mean what kind of ad doesn't allow it self to be clicked. in other words i really dislike sites that do that *cough*hardwareheaven T_T

I would suggest getting flattr account for the teamliquid site (test it a month or two) and see if you can earn some money that way ( url - http://flattr.com ).
(At least I have an flattr account and would gladly share money that way)

Enable adds:
Ad block: (left click icon and) add an exception to teamliquid.net
Noscript: (left click icon and) add an exception to trian.net

Look, I REALLY want to help out TL, which is why I'm sure someone here is familiar enough with ABP to let me know how I can unblock all of TL except for www.teamliquid.net/video/streams/.

If anyone has that solution, or can set it so that all the streaming sites prioritize blocking on sites that are set to exceptions, then let me know.

ad-blocking is ridiculous.

how can you support what YOU ARE USING if you disable the ads?

for annoying ads, ok, but for everything else... non sense.

I agree Zlasher that is my issue as well...I disabled most of the main pages I visit here on TL but have not done it fully because of the stream ads.

Tough decision because I like the horse banner but eventually I disabled Adblock for TL. It is probably the easiest way to help out without doing anything special.

Seeing that banner made me realize that I still had AdBlock enabled on TL, so I turned it off. I thought it was a pretty nice way to go about it too, instead of the banners like "You're stealing from us! Stop blocking ads! Seriously!" that other sites go to.

I really do hate those "take up 80% of the site"-ads that many sites have so I always use adblock. Can't stand commercials or ads, but when I saw that cute horse with the text I immediately made an exception for TL :- ) Just to give that small amount of support.

As soon as I saw the horse banner, I disabled my adblock for TL.net, but I'm still seeing it occasionally (and no ads in general, if the horse banner is not there).

Are there some additional ad-servers that need to be unblocked? TL.net is whitelisted in adblock and noscript.

It might be offtopic, But can someone PM me on how to disable advert blocking for www.Teamliquid.net only?

I'm a google chrome user and im using the Extention AdBlock - Versie: 2.2.23
& with that, Can i also disable the ability to click on adverts? the main reason i use adblocks is because i misclick on them (And that they bite quite some in the loading speed of pages.)

Didn't realize adblocks stopped the revenue generated from the ads. Though the biggest reason I have adblock is not to block the random ads on the website but to block the commercials in streams, am I going to have to disable it there too? It's annoying to have to have to watch a bunch of ads in preparation or have to watch extra ads if you want to close and reopen streams.

I saw the banner with the stuffed horses and my heart just melted. The horses are too cute to just ignore. Besides, the ad isn't even that overbearing. It's like a small rectangle that is barely even noticeable.

Good idea however, I didn't even realize I had it on on TL 0.o! Off now.

I never thought of turning my ad-block off for TL until I saw that horse. My eyes were attracted to it, because in the space where there is usually nothing, there was now a friggen' horse! So I read the text, then looked more closely at the horse. I stared deep into its beady black eyes. They seemed so sad and forlorn, it was like the horse was saying: "Please Mr. Wiggles, please turn off your adblock. TL needs your help, you can help us!". So with tears in my eyes I thought, "just for you Horsey!", and moved my mouse over and turned off Adblock for Teamliquid, "just for you Horsey".

And that's the story of why there's a coupon advertisement at the top of my screen now.

Gogo TL!

The horse banner is just amazing, kinda tempting me to leave the adblock on. Nah, just joking, disabled it now, I usually forget to disable it on the sites I like, for example Rock, Paper, Shotgun I've had it on for a while until I realised that I had it running there - immediately disabled it after that. I like to support the sites I frequently visit, so removing the adblock is not a problem. Especially with TL.net where there's like 1 add on the whole page

I immediately disabled my AdBlock for TL.net ... If that helps them, not like I'm actually clicking on the links, then it wouldn't hurt me, since I'm already delighted to be a tiny lil' particle of this community.

I mean, whatever floats your boat - that goes. My boat can float with seeing TL.net with ads, since they politely asked me to disable my AdBlock ... I can't see a reason to just go with whatever you want and don't make a fuss about it. Ads or no ads, this site is of infinite value !

Would any admin shed light on exactly how they receive payment through ads? Is it by pageviews, ad impressions, clickthroughs, or something else?

Sometimes it's based on how many clicks to the ad but usually it's just a monthly fee paid to the site. Sites with higher traffic can charge more per month. (I think, not 100% sure)

I was kinda wodering something similar, simply because I'll turn AdBlock off for TL, but I don't understand how that can help? I can't recall having ever clicked on an off site advertisement link, and will having it just not disabled benefit TL in any way?

(For clarity I've disabled it at any rate to show my support for site and the community, just curious.)

I've honestly never even noticed that AD until I saw this thread lol. That's how little the ad space is... sigh smh

I just disabled my adblock (I'm pretty sure.. lol I haven't ever tried before so we'll see if it works). I also didn't even see the horse banner (weird.. but if it's not on the minimap I just ignore it). So at least this thread has done a bit of good .

Tbh I didn't even think of disabling it until I saw this (although the horse banner would have convinced me.)

TL has a mix of ads, some pay per click, some pay per view. This is why even if you never click on ads, disabling adblock still helps to support sites with ads.

Teamliquid is one of the few sites I turn off adblock for.

I mean, the banner is tiny, it's not like some sites that have massive annoying side banners or something.

I had my adblock turned off on this site until I started watching user streams. I hate having the ads pop up while I'm watching the videos embedded from streaming sites. The worst part is Teamliquid doesn't even get money from those ads (as I understand it). I think my solution will be to have adblock turned off here, and rather than watching the embedded streams, just click the link to watch it on the streaming site itself, where I have adblock enabled.
It's easier not to.

My confusion is, does TL make money just for having the ads load, or only when the ads are clicked? Because honestly my brain is so wired to not click on popups/advertisements that I pretty much ignore them now :/ I mean if it will help you guys to have the ads just there, then by all means I'll gladly leave AdBlock off. I just don't understand how the whole advertisement banner system works.

And someone pointed out that the horsie is so cute it gives a reason to block ads. Could we ad-observing users get a little message of appreciation from the horsie next to the ads? PLEASE???

I'm not sure if youve just switched it to always show or it's my iPad but all I'm getting now is the AddBlock banner. Maybe it's the lack of flash support or just the plain weird connection string, but safari (mobile or otherwise) isn't that odd so it can't really be jscript.

So just a heads up that your missing out on views from the iPod/one/ad line. Every little but counts ! And don't want to put everyones good faith to waste by blocking a whole user base

Some ads are flash based, but they usually do browser detection to check for that. The horse banner is always shown if no ad loads, it doesn't specifically try to target adblock users.

I used to block TL because I watched streams here, then I realized I could watch streams on livestream or ustream and block those sites instead. Not that they don't deserve to make money, but their ads are really intrusive and annoying.

Although I do still get the horse banner.

I don't have adblock/noscript installed, but sometimes the horse banner is loaded instead of ads.

Sad horse staring at you until your soul melts far enough to disable adblock. Sniff.

Hokay, good deed for the day done, lets keep on messing around

[Edit] Untill is one l too much. Silly me.
