Introduction
Quick background. I'm a top ranked platinum player. 2x winner of triple strike tournament and finalist in smuft's battle tourney. I'm on team Root with players such as Sheth/Joseki/Cauthonluck/Kiwikaki/nightwolf/catz/drewbie/Bubba/slush.
I don't have a lot to offer in terms of $$ or prizes as I'm a college student but the winner of our contest will get 2 free hours of coaching from myself. Interested? Read on...
The starcraft 2 map editor which was released today has a feature to allow conversion of BW maps to SC2 maps. The problem is that some of the terrain/textures/cliffs aren't properly converted. Many of the maps appear all black and don't necessarily conform to how their BW equivalents were.
As such Joseki and I have decided to host a little contest.
The Contest
We give you 5 maps to choose from. You pick 1 map and make it in sc2 as faithfully to the original as possible. We tried to choose maps that featured interesting mechanics from broodwar and not just generic terrain/base kind of layouts.
1. Destination - notable feature being stacked minerals in the back of each base. 2. Fighting Spirit - Does not feature any strange mechanics but an extremely solid map in general. 3. Medusa Stacked - temples + mineral patches 4. Blue Storm - Unique feature being the entrance to each base that only allows units of zealot size or smaller to enter. 5. Heartbreak Ridge - Stacked temple + repeated high ground as well as stacked mineral patches.
The winner of the contest as judged by Joseki and myself will receive 2 hours of coaching in SC2 from me as well as fame and fortune on the iccup tv program as provided by Joseki. We will also organize some sort of show match on your map but the details of this are still being worked out.
Contest Information
The contest begins today and ends in 2 weeks. April 22nd -> May 6th 11 59 PM PST
All entries should include the .sc2map file you created and should be playable as provided.
Email entries to sc2mapcontest@gmail.com with your teamliquid account.
The idea is to recreate the original BW map as faithfully as possible.

Clarifications - All gases should be split into 2 gas with half in each. For example. Where broodwar had one gas with 5000 your recreation should have 2 gas with 2500 each. If broodwar has 2 gases at a given base with 2500 your recreation should have 4 gases with 1250.
*** More to be added as necessary
GL HF to everyone

My first pick: Tau Cross. My friend just re-made Blood Bath. Those 5 maps are great.

In keeping with established SC2 guidelines, things like stacked minerals and stacked temples would probably become destructible rocks. Does that go against recreating the maps faithfully, according to this contest?

great idea
maaan how badly I wanna play desti HBR and neo medusa in SC2.

For the sake of broodwar nostalgia I would prefer to see stacked temples and stacked minerals. While destructible rocks are similar in nature they are slightly different in practice. The difference is that in order to destroy stacked temples you pretty much had to have splash damage while rocks can be killed pretty easily with a regular army.
Stacked minerals also worked differently as they allowed workers to create entrances where an army couldn't.
Part of the contest involves people figuring out how to recreate stuff like this.

I agree with you about the nostalgia bit, but stacked temples and minerals were a rough work around for Broodwar because the editor wasn't equiped with the proper tools to accomplish these goals gracefully, where SC2 has.
It's not very hard to stack minerals or "temples" (Since there are no temples and I don't see a way to import custom models it would have to be some other obstruction). In fact stacking objects is easier in this editor than it ever was in Brood War. I was simply wondering if the contest valued accuracy over aesthetics. I guess I've got my answer.
