I mean, I've heard of Turtle Rock and Echo for years now. It's like still using Lost Temple in tournaments today. Is it just really difficult to make a balanced War3 map?

It's like still using Lost Temple in tournaments today. Is it just really difficult to make a balanced War3 map? Depending on the league and tournament, some maps are still used and some aren't. LoTemp was taken out in general. Echo and TR are still somewhat used. Melting Valley is an interesting new map that HUs have a terrible time on. And yes, it is somewhat hard to make a balanced War3 map (it is in SC/BW too, it's just there's a bigger motivation with the Korean e-sports scene), namely because there are more factors involved for the dynamics of a regular War3 game that isn't relevant in SC/BW. The neutral creeps, neutral shops/taverns and the heroes, especially the first 2 can and does determine the win/loss-ratio on a lot of maps and complicate the making of the map. And there are no really balanced maps at the high levels, I think the closest you get is Echo Isles based on the various replays I have watched, the games on there are typically close and winnable for either player.

Evenstar is one of the Korean commentators and "won the first place at Korea Blizzard Worldwide Invitational and Prime League Season IV in 2004" back before he retired. They are only playing one map though, on MV. http://www.sk-gaming.com/content/25028-ToD_to_feature_in_GWI_exhibition_game
