Unfortunate that it's on such a high speed circuit where his pace is determined by 4 braking zones, but better than nothing. I hope he gets the drive in Abu Dhabi as well, Marina is a much better place to show his pace. How so? if anything its better for him , he will be able to qualify high and race at the front , it can't be easy to switch teams on such a short notice , the car handles differently (obvious) , but the steering wheel is also a challenge to get on top of , so such a circuit (when there should be minimal manual settings activity needed) is the best one to be competitive right away. If he beats Bottas , mama Mia , Ham stock will plummet , Ham is crossing fingers HARD for Bot to dominate Russel.

Yup with only "4 corners" this week, it will serve as a nice getting used to for Russell while Abu Dhabi will be an interesting benchmark for the future. For Mick Haas news, Kimi will be racing sons of 2 of his opponents next season. That longevity. Alonso will too race both elder and younger MSC

It's kinda grey right now whether it's a one-race deal or two, so I don't know if he'd get a chance to drive the Merc in Abu Dhabi. Edit: As a side note, I argue Hamilton has nothing to prove here. He has absolutely dominated Bottas in the time they were together. If Russell beats Bottas, that means Russell is great, not that Hamilton is bad.

I'll wait til the race to pass judgement as the racing might actually be interesting, but as far as quali goes, sector 2 is a nightmare. Absolutely impossible to pass somebody without being impeded. I'm actually super surprised they won't relax impeding rules, because literally everybody will be guilty of impeding someone if they are in sector 2 on a cooldown or outlap. As for Bottas, he actually put in a fastest lap in FP2 by a few tenths, but promptly had it deleted for track limits. That being said, he didn't get anywhere close to Russell on any of his other flying laps, so I think Russell has a shot at qualifying, despite Bottas' faster ultimate pace. Russell has been super consistent, so he's just gotta nail it while Bottas is slightly off and he has qualifying. I'd be surprised if Russell finishes lower than P2 without incidents though. Merc is just super fast in general.

Oh and Albon and Vettel are consistently subpar ... I don’t see Alex keeping his seat next year knowing the ruthless approach of RB management to their pilots

GR matching Bottas is a pretty sweet result, and Leclerc pulled some magic there. That was way higher than the Ferrari deserved, I have no idea how he got it that high.

Reading what Leclerc said about that lap was interesting. He said he watched Gasly's onboard and saw a way of taking a corner differently so he did it and that's how he hooked up that ridiculous lap. Russell performed about where I expected. It would have been cool to see him get pole but matching a guy who is able to beat Hamilton in qualifying is quite respectable. Doubly so given the circumstances. He was parachuted into an unfamiliar car that is not built to fit him (he's using a 3 year old seat and has to wear shoes too small for him to fit into Hamilton's car) and is against someone who has been at Mercedes for 3 years and he still almost beat him. edit: for the track itself, I've found it really dull. Hopefully it makes a good track for the race but both practice and qualifying on it has been pretty boring. It needs more corners and speed changes. I feel like unless Verstappen gets ahead into turn 1, Mercedes is just gonna Sunday cruise off into the distance.

Of course, I could be wrong and it ends up be the most boring race ever. I guess we'll see

Russell leads And &%E$^#$%@#%$#@#%@%#@#@$%@$%@%#$#^^#^$#^#%@#@^$$%#^ Bottas had a bad start, let Russell pass, blocks Perez, Verstappen, Leclerc. Kimi spins. Perez locks up. Leclerc crashes into him. Verstappen took evasive action to dodge them and into the barriers.
