It's pretty much free for Harstem anyway Idk, people who are qualifying for a tournament are usually in good shape, while that is not certain for invites. So maybe Harstem just played the qualifier, hoping that he could have one opponent more being invited instead of qualifying and thus potentially weaker.
Or maybe he's just a good friend and wanted Dennis to save some money

I hope people like Stork can still come even if they don't win the paid trip although I feel like it's unlikely :/

Yeah same for viOLet and Polt. Since they are teamless, I don't think their sponsors/agency would pay a trip to Germany.

Maybe they can do something like paying 50 % of a plane ticket and the player pays the rest (that's what we do for high cost ticket at least )

I scanned this thread and haven't found an answer. But what's the policy if a player declines because they can't afford or don't want to pay for travel? Are they simply replaced with invitations?

I know, I'm not going to pity him But it can be understandable for a player, even if he won good money in the past, to not want to lose too much money at the end of a tournament (I'm sure the airline ticket must cost at least 1500$).

That's how it has been in the past, so yes, probably.
