WCG Guatemala was this weekend, here are the results taken from the Guatemala WCG page
1. Chivu.gt 2. Warlinker (previously wS.Warlinker) 3. Kawoq
So Chivu goes to the grand finals again (he won in 2003 and 2004 as well). Guatemala isn't known for it's great Starcraft players but more than 70 people played in the qualification. I wish Chivu the best of luck in the grand finals, hopefully he can show some real skill!
* in 2003, Chivu used the alias macm20, in 2004, he used MAURO

Cool. Who are these people though?

The only Guatamala player on ICCUP with any games in the past season is Nightmare.gt who might be Chivu in an AKA? http://www.iccup.com/profile.php?lookup=139200
How has Guatamala done in the past in WCG's? I can't seem to think of any players have a name for themselves.

that is a different person I believe.
in WCG, Guatemala has yet to win a game in Starcraft. Hopefully, this year they can do this

I thought it was more to do with the actual organisers of the event in the country, as opposed to some sort of united board that decides which country gets slots for which games. Correct me if I'm wrong.

H_ is correct, plus Guatemala is closer to the US than any of the other countries mentioned above and this is the only player Guatemala is sending. So everyone shut up

The sponsors in your country decide what games to give spots, technically I think every country has a spot in wcg for every game, they just need to find a sponsor

everyyear someone says shit like this without thinking or reading up.
the spots have to do with sponsors, not the actual country itself.

This is what happens. If your country didn't get a spot, it is because your country organization didn't give you one.
That being said, what is the best way to get a spot in WCG? Have SEVENTY fucking people show up! Damn that is awesome, good job to whoever got the word out in that country. Keep it up!

did you go beside? were all of them actual players or a bunch of guys who just wandered in there and decided to play? 70 is pretty ridiculous, especially for such a small bw country
|
negative, I don't live in Guatemala. I think it was only the top 16 done offline, the rest of the qualifiers were done online.

I dunno... I'm sure that if countries like France or the Nordic countries had a SC spot in WCG, there would be at least 50 players who would attempt to qualify , and probably more.
Especially if they pooled the nordic countries together to give 1 spot to nordic... you'd have a lot of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland (probably less from Denmark, Finland), but it would still add up to a lot of players.
So it has partly to do with being able to amass a lot of people, and partly to do with the organizer of the event itself (I'm sure a lot of uninformed WCG organizers think BW is an ancient, dead game, so don't feel the need to add a spot), and partly due to sponsors (IE... sponsors don't want to pay for BW players because they think "wtf is this game my grandparents used to play")

Completely agree. Chivu might not be known as an outstanding player with the rest of the world, but hell, I don't think I could get such a feat done. And ONLY ONE was chosen too. Very nice and good luck to Chivu
