Ladies and Gentlemen,
It has been a while. It is a new year, and Heart of the Swarm is just around the corner. The first tournaments of 2013 have been played, and it is time to show you something that we have been preparing for quite a while. We are incredibly pleased and excited to announce the first (of many) Dutch Barcraft of 2013!
Hal16, Utrecht Archimedeslaan 16. From 18.00 Facebook Event
Yes, you are seeing that correctly. We will have a League of Legends area. We think that with the addition of this popular game, we’ll get the chance to grow the Dutch gaming scene.
We have decided to go with an entrance fee to be able to support the Barcraft events on long-term.
This pricing is set at 6 Euros pre-sale via LINK COMING SOON 7 Euros at the door
How awesome is it to have Steelseries as our sponsor? They will be providing plenty of goodies for giveaways, and we will ensure that our events live up to their standard of quality.
In the future we’ll use this space to add more news about our event, including some projects that we are very excited about. Stay tuned and we’ll see you on the 17th of March!
Update 1: Are you afraid that you might not get home on the 17th? Well don't fret! We've figured out where you can sleep safely without looking like a bum.
The B&B Hostel in the centre of Utrecht will take care of you! http://www.hostelutrecht.nl/ Mention Barcraft and you'll get 5% off on your reservation. It's not much, but it's something.
You have classes on monday? Just drive back (Or take the train, your choice) the next morning!
Update 2:
On March 05 2013 03:22 HungoverIsAChoice wrote: Since organising a Barcraft of this size isn't easy, Pimmeh needed some help in setting it up. Makes things easier. Se there's me. Nice to meet you.
Anyway, enough with the formalities. Here's a newsupdate: we've been in contact with Blizzard, and even though we couldn't do the HotS release party on such a short notice, Blizzard still agreed to send some of their stuff our way. I haven't got a clue what though. So here's a challenge: guess what they will send us, and you will get a goodie in return! What goodie? I haven't got a clue. I'll let you know when it arrives. The person with the best guess wins, so guess away.
Oh, and Pimmeh, perhaps you should put this in the main post as an update.
Update 3: Giveaway! So Steelseries has some awesome products.
The Steelseries Siberia v2 Frost has everything. Comfortable design, lightweight materials, and a sound quality that cures every ailment. You want this.
Alternatively, you might want to go for the Steelseries Sensei Frost. With a grip that will never let you go, and incredible precision, you will have to keep your old mouse to throw around when you ragequit. You want this too.
Good news, everyone! As of this moment we've started a contest (click me!) to see which one of you receives one of these prizes!
Go to the post on our facebook page, and maybe you will take one of these home after Barcraft!

I'll be there, last time was a ton of fun

Not that I mind the entry fee, I think it's fair, but can we get a breakdown of where it's going? For the sake of clarity, is it an attempt to cover the costs or is someone pocketing the money?

Short answer? Operating costs
Long answer? We need the beamers, telivisions, cables, and the rent for the location. In the past we have been able to get that for free but such is no longer the case. When we reach above the break even point, we'll add this into the production value of the event, adding more decorations and such.

So no profit, fair enough.

What would be wrong with making a little profit on the side? It shouldn't be the primary goal, being community driven, but why not reward the people who are organizing this event, and presumably put alot of hard work into this.
It makes organizers more willing to take the time to do these sorts of things, and should grow the dutch scene, which i assume we would all like to see.

I wouldn't mind if there was money left at the end of the day, but it's a matter of principle. Sure, I don't think a community event should be netting big profits but far more importantly; it should be open and transparent. Hell, I have friends at DUH events, I'll be at The Party next month casting. I'd be all for them sleeping in mattresses filled with money ;p For a community event it's much better to state "hey, this is where the money is going" than to hide it, because people will feel taken advantage of if they find out you are after the fact.
Esports is barely big enough in the Benelux for people to work in it as is. If you know your scene, you know we're years behind on US/Germany/what have you. We have a lot of catching up to do before events like this is profitable, for now we're heavily reliant on breaking even and people that contribute because it's their passion. Give it 3-4 years and a serious climate shift, as is, Dutch companies are much like their people: Way too sober for idealistic concepts like esports :p We'll have to convince them the model works first.

Our scene does kind of suck yes D: I do agree with you on basicly all of your points though. Didn't quite look at it from that perspective. Now lets get hype for that one event us fans can actually attend
|
While I understand your worries about the financial situation, keep in mind that a successful event needs two things:
1. Repeat value, where the guests will want to come again and experience the same if not better moments. If we can charge a few euros for entry, just to make the event better, it would be foolish of us not to actually make the event better. People wouldn't come again, and Barcraft would vanish very quickly.
2. Healthy financial situation. We need to be able to actually pay for the event and our expenses. If we can't do this, there won't be a Barcraft. With location renting there is already money that needs to be put on the table, and we also need the proper equipment to handle 250+ people watching a game. Nothing in this world happens for free, and that goes for every aspect of what we are trying to achieve here.
I believe that there was a big riot about MLG and their paywall for their streams. Sundance, or someone similar, adressed these issues with a really simple statement: Without money, nothing will happen.
Our scene does not suck, it's just underdeveloped. With initiatives like the DSCL, Barcraft, and The-Party hosting bigger Starcraft II (and e-Sports related) events, it can only get better. As we've seen with our Barcrafts, the Dutch are extremely enthousiastic, and are willing to drive for kilometers to attend. How awesome is that? Aside from Meltdown, we're the biggest Barcraft in Europe, and I think that is fantastic.

I was with you until you quoted Sundance. Compromises the integrity of esports far too much ;p
I think we all understand that there's costs and they need to be covered. That's why it's good to state that the money does indeed go to covering costs. I'm sure everyone'll be happy.

Would love to go to one of those, but unfortunately dont see myself going to one on a sunday any time soon with work the next day
Hope this will be a success and we actually get a proper big esports scene, something which has been missing in the netherlands since i started online gaming in 1998

Awesome! Never missed a BarCraft and will surely attend this one! Don't mind the fee as well, since it all supports the growth of our scene.
Cya there!

That's not exactly specific, is it?

Well, you cant really be too specific right? I mean i could guess that they will send a 2 collectors editions, with the autograph of BitByBit and Nada, and 2 shirts worn by dustin browder himself. But guess what, thats not going to happen lol, being that specific almost nullifies your chances xd

Considering you're the only one that replied, I think you're in the clear on being too specific. Maybe this helps; Off the top of my head, for WoL they had an SC2 puzzle, marine&zerg figurines a larger Jim Raynor figurine, SC2 stickers, SC2 badges and yes, the generic SC2 shirts and posters. Oh and I guess the SteelSeries mousepads&Razers hardwire line, but I doubt Blizzard would hand those out.
