If these two games were coming out at the same time, I'd probably be a bit more excited for D3. i've played d2 for 4-5 years, and from what i've seen, this has everything I liked from d2 and more. to list a few:
- physics engine, meaning destructible objects/environment
- new drop system, so barb items go to the barb, etc
- b.net 2.0, so I'm expecting D3 to be pretty much maphack, botting, duping, and hacking free. d2 used old coding and really suffered from this, probably its biggest letdown.
- a lot more balanced character classes
Now about SC2. I've played sc for about 3-4 years (I moved onto sc after I quit d2), and i've probably seen every piece of media released on sc2. I'll most definitely be playing it all the way until d3 is released (ie. late 2010), unless something goes really wrong with the game that I haven't seen yet. However, when both come out, it'll be a tough decision but i'll probably move onto d3.
SC2 obviously has the competitive skill factor that d3 will never have, but d3 is a lot more relaxing and laid back. I found it more enjoyable hanging out and playing with friends on d2 than sc from experience.
In any case, just hoping to get some other opinions. I don't really know anyone who's played both d2 and sc (and looking forward to sc2 and d3), so they're either really bias or not interested

im too old for sc2... don't have the super competitive spirit anymore

Either way when both are released the rest of my life the previous hasn't destroyed the latter will finish off.

This. But i'm inclined to think D3 is going to do a much better job of ruining my life. It's going to be like when fallout 3 sucked three weeks of my life into oblivion but since its online and i can do it over and over with more and more characters it will never end.
But SC2 i'll probably just be addicted till i become good enough to newb bash :-/

In all honesty, Diablo 3.
Starcraft is one of my favorite games of all time, but the Diablo series has always been just pure fun. Starcraft has epic competitive moments but it really isn't that great when you want to just sit down and relax, quite the contrary, I find it tends to get people (myself included) too riled up. Huge APM requirements to play effectively are bleh.

Diablo 3. I get the feeling that SC2 is going to be horribly disappointing.

To be honest, I'm probably only going to play SC2 2v2 ladder for kicks, nothing serious. Diablo 3 will probably take up most of my free-time/rainy day times. I'll probably have to set aside time for SC2
BUT
If talking about SC2 on a whole, campaigns and future UMS maps included, then I'm more excited for SC2. UMS maps held/hold my interest still to this day for SC.

Same. However, i still would hate a 'casual' SC2 just the same. D1/D2 were great. Hopefully D3 is as good as D1 but with having more gear/char customizations like in D2. Then that would be epic.

I feel sc2 just can't live up to the original and I like things the way they are now (sc wise) so I'm not really that excited about sc2 because it'll break all of that apart, slowly but surely. On the other hand I never really got into Diablo and by now it's pretty dated so I'm actually looking forward to checking out the new one.

I think most casual people will tend to play more D3 because you can just sit and relax like Aurra said. But if SC2 is as good as SC:BW than in 5 years nobody will play D3 anymore while SC2 will be huge in e-sports...that's only if SC2 is good tough

Neither really.
D2 was one of my favorite games ever. from what i see D3 isn't like that anymore, it isn't a lightning fast game with pk and pvp anymore, and i didn't hear anything about hardcore mode, playing on softcore was such a waste of time.
As for SC2, i'm sure BW will remain a better game.

I'm really surprised how many people are favoring D3... that game is so easy man. Its going to be like a wow expansion but with less abilities.
Dont get me wrong though, I love D2 and played it A LOT, I just have always liked Starcraft more for the extreme replay value.

SC2 for sure. Diablo 2 is a great game but it's not the kind of thing that has ever been able to hold my attention for periods longer than a few weeks at a time, I kind of expect the same thing from Diablo 3.
