So I was browsing the General Forum just now looking for funny things, and I found this thread:
Penis biting escort charged with attempted murder
With these bans in it.

The Murder charges will probably be lowered but there is something to be said when someone is under physical attack and your attacker is denying you ability to contact law enforcement, it is definitely worthy of heavier charges than simple assault, such as two drunk guys fighting outside of a bar or something. He was obviously dicking around. User was temp banned for this post.

So I looked at the ABL and saw this:
StarStruck was just temp banned for 2 days by KwarK. *
That account was created on 2010-04-28 00:02:28 and had 17428 posts.
Reason: We're not doing general forum puns anymore.
*This is not a KwarK hate thread
I feel like the general forum is waayyyyy too serious at times. Between the US politics thread and all the depressing news stories that come up, nothing's that funny because there's someone who is aggro posting against whatever anyone else says.
So when a topic comes up as ridiculous as this, and I repeat
Penis biting escort charged with attempted murder
What on earth are people supposed to do except make bad puns? Discuss the legality of escorts? Talk about the court proceedings? That's just way too serious.
Besides, when did General start having these unspoken rules of "no puns"? I can understand banning the crazy US-hating-North-Korea-is-best people, but being funny shouldn't be a reason for a ban.

Yes, I saw that too, and don't really understand. When I went to the banlist to check for why they were banned and saw the pun reasoning, I went straight here to check if there was something saying that the General Forums were getting a rule change.
I could see if the mods wanted to tighten up the posting in the General Forum, as puns don't really add much to discussion besides being a joke, but there's all kinds of one-liners and "reaction posts", that didn't receive any moderation, and I haven't seen any announcement of changes to the General Forum. So, why single out puns?
Right now, I'm pretty confused and I'd like to hear the reasoning behind the warnings/bans from a mod. I don't want to jump to conclusions, so I'd like to get their side of the story before I make any judgements.

I reckon "What on earth are people supposed to do except make bad puns?" is exactly why the thread got closed.
|
Pretty sure it is not a precedent. Shit read like a reddit thread also known as shit posting.
|
|
|
Maybe KwarK has been traumatized by similar events in the past and doesn't appriciate jokes being made about such a serious topic.
|
I doubt it. Kwark doesnt sound like a guy who will bite someones penis off.
|
Well, the thread's closed, that's a relief.
But...I'd still like to know why no puns are allowed...
|
i was going to make a similar thread, but this one is here so i will just tack my thoughts on down here
a lot of the personality and humor of the TL community shows in small cute things like the puns general forums.. this is a forum on the internet built around a video game and filled with people that are mostly pretty young.
i don't feel like we really need to be so serious as having a ban rule about things like making jokes or puns
maybe things that are blatantly rude or seriously distasteful.. but just for making light of things?
edit - if you guys do decide to keep warning/banning for puns - can we get the Ten Commandments updated? we can make "No Puns in General Forum" the 11th commandment

Pun exchanges kind of hamper discussion. Even if a hooker biting someone's dick isn't going to be a huge center for debate, certainly no discussion is gonna happen if all people are doing is tossing around lame puns that take 0 effort to make and aren't really funny at all.

Dude, those puns had me cracking a smile at work. They were funny. You're just boring

You said it yourself: what's the point of the thread if not to make bad puns?
So it was closed and offenders banned. General is for discussion, not shitposting (there are plenty of other places to do that).

I support op. TL is a video gaming community (for the most part) and banning people who try to cheer up the general forum would just lower the enjoyment of looking through news threads. I mean, why ban people for making puns, but not other funny one-liners that add nothing to the thread. I posted "Escorts are too dangerous nowadays. Invest in sex doll." in the same thread, but did not receive any moderation. What makes my post so much better than those puns? Nothing really. So if you're going to crack down on puns, just start banning everyone that tries cracking a joke or trying to make someone smile. Turn the general forum into a regular online news site because TL is too serious a site to condone anything funny, god forbid PUNS.

sc2 = huge influx of members, which changes posting standards in general threads. Maybe they just decided to arbitrarily end pun exchanges now, though, I don't know, but it makes sense that they're not as OK because of the huge amount of members

That makes no sense. How does an increase in the number of members lead to higher posting standards in anything but the strategy and general forums for Starcraft 2?

How does an increase in the number of members lead to higher posting standards in anything but the strategy and general forums for Starcraft 2? Because the increase in traffic, and the stricter rules necessary because of it, were not limited to those two forums. Users that joined because of SC2 use the general forum as well.
That said, that would make sense if that was a policy that started soon after SC2 was released. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't remember puns being punished before unless they were done in a very insensitive way in threads that should be taken seriously. The death of puns isn't exactly a huge loss, but I personally found it a little odd that other silly comments that were equally not productive received no action, be it in that or other threads in general.
