That said, that would make sense if that was a policy that started soon after SC2 was released. The death of puns isn't exactly a huge loss, but I personally found it a little odd that other silly comments that were equally not productive received no action, be it in that or other threads in general.

Yeah, basically this. I don't think pun exchanges have been banned since the sc2 influx came, so maybe they just now decided to do it. Anyway, as skc explains, yes it does make sense (re: prae)
