We're beginning to have a pretty long history of BW news threads being destroyed after being put into the Community News section. And by this I mean being turned into SC2 vs BW discussion, or What does this mean for SC2??? or Looks like BW is dying!! or whatever. Frankly it's bad for the thread and no one likes it.

So PLEASE! If this thread turns into that again, stop doing it. Learn your lesson. Stop licking the lightbulb. At least consider it. No amount of moderation is going to keep discussion interesting, you just have to stop inviting 4chan to BW news threads.

I understand you think every sc2 fan is a mongoloid and you want none of them near brood war, but you have to understand that bringing more attention to the bw news threads via community news can only be a good thing for the sustenance of the international BW community.

Let's remove the bias and just assess the suggestion:
both news deserve equal attention and are equal in terms of importance. Everyone in the community would have to agree with you and giving BW less publicity because of the comments that follow.
The news doesn't change because of comments.

I think most people would agree that it's annoying/a problem, the fact that these news threads keep turning into silly discussions. In fact, people have found problem with it to the point where they suggest that the site be split into two. This is, of course, silly and undesirable. I'm not really sure how one would go about preventing those threads from being crapped up though. I suppose some SC2 fans just feel the need to post their stupid anti-BW opinions all over. I think the warnings/bans being dished out should help prevent such silliness in the future.

No matter what you say, unless you invent a way to making licking a light bulb pleasurable, continuing to get electrocuted is a stupid idea. There's no theorycraft here, we have a wasteland of proof for what happens to threads when they get put into community news. It's not good. Yes, I want SC2 players to be interested in BW, but TL is unable to sufficiently moderate these threads due to the sheer number of people who visit this thread. Please recognise your limitations and make appropriate decisions. "All publicity is good publicity" is a hackneyed saying which is not actually true. You can't use banal sayings like this to make important decisions, especially when the proof to the contrary is before your eyes. You think people want to join a community where there is just a mountain of shit discussion? I don't think so either. They will just be scared off.

Don't worry, I think staff has learned their lesson after basically destroying five threads in a row by moving it to community news lol. If it happens again I will definitely complain as loudly as I can edit: wowow just as I say it, it's put into community news. T.T I'll reserve myself until after this turns into a you-know-what debate Stop being so fucking pessimistic. There isn't anything wrong with the thread yet and if it goes that way we can ban nerds. The most recent things that have gone into cnews were kespa drama stuff so they're naturally more controversial.

If they act stupid in these threads they get banned for it (honestly when has this NOT been the case?) so they either learn for next time or get banned longer/permanently. BW guys should all have the report button, use it and move on.

I've never heard someone suggest we stop giving Brood War attention. This is so weird.

Let's break this down a little.
In linked thread- Total Number Posters joined in 2010/11 = 25
- Total Number of Posters with positive posts = 23
- Total Number of Posters with negative posts = 2
- Total Number of Posters banned = 2
Problem?

Probulous, page 5 is when the thread was made Community News and there's already 7 posts on that page alone that are offtopic/degenerated. I did say give it a chance and see if the same thing happens again, but if you check previous threads where they were community newsed they all have big warnings on the top of them from mods getting frustrated with offtopic discussion and they all lost anything meaningful that was happening in them before they were community news'd.
BW is a sport and deserves to have legitimate sports discussion. When you invite people who don't follow BW to the discussion it doesn't make sense. Want to community news a finals or a big event? OK. Want to community news something only BW followers understand/care about? I don't get it. What does someone who doesn't follow BW care about bo5 vs bo7? I can see it now, "wow, they're playing less games must mean less people care" followed by 3 pages of reactions from people trying to tell that person that's not what it means at all. It hasn't happened yet, but if it does you guys should seriously think about this. That's called feedback, I'm pretty sure this is the right forum. Don't take it personally.

While I can't say I contribute to the discussion in topics like these, I do really enjoy reading things like this about the BW scene (of which I am admittedly new to). I'm not really in the habit of browsing the BW forums, so putting things like this article in community news makes me much more likely to read the thread. Yes, there will be trolls in the thread, but there may be a lot of people like me who mainly stay in the SC2 side of things that would at least like the content in the OP brought to our attention.
Just my two cents.

Mani complained in a thread about it's shitstorm that happened in a BW thread. So I PM'd him.

Just my two cents. Yeah, you are right. I was being dumb yesterday. We got five good pages of discussion anyway, it wasn't going to be much more and I can't argue it's bad if more eyes see the thread after that. Sorry for the comparison about lightbulbs, it was inappropriate. I think people who troll community news threads should be banned, though, not temp banned. They obviously have no intention of positive contribution, and I can't stop BW fans from reacting apocalyptically to every troll post with 10 responses lol.
Sorry~

Sorry~ Perm vs Temp will always be done on a number of factors. Trolling a BW thread generally will result in a 1weekish ban for your typical sc2 user with 500~ posts and 1 warning or so.

My point wasn't necessarily that the thread isn't being derailed but rather a large number of new posters are doing the right thing. I can understand why you would rather keep the threads out of the limelight but this is what attracts new supporters. It is an attitude thing. It is this kind of thing that makes older posters look "elitist". Rather than focusing on the new posters who are actively contributing to BW discussions, there is a sensitivity around the few trolls that obviously have no desire to be productive. They get banned, just like anywhere else.
As you say this is the feedback forum, but I never see threads here complimenting the arrival a new posters who take an active part in the BW threads. It is always about the few trolls that try to ruin it. Being insular is not going to make the problem go away, we need to encourage good posting.
Thank you for taking the time to reply.

I feel like the main reason why many conversations turn into BW vs SC2 or BW dying is cause a lot of the news has been looking pretty glum: MSL 'shutting down' + disband of 3 teams. Trust me, I don't think that the Korean scene is going anywhere (anyone that watched the OSL finals will agree hands down), but for an SC2 user that reads something like 'Hwaseung Oz reported to disband' or whatever they instantly jump to the conclusion that BW is dead.
Not that I agree with that (I'm tired of the debates as well), but just trying to add some perspective to you 'old timers'.. =]

I will never ever ever let BW be buried in its own section at the bottom of the sidebar. BW deserves to be celebrated and spotlighted. It is the reason we are here at all. If people want to fuck around in those threads, fine, but I'll ban the shit out of them and BW will still be on the front page.
Half the battle are BW fans though, who give as much as they get, feed the trolls, and refuse to stay on topic. Their behaviour goes a long way in determining how those threads go.
