Question on changing processor

zoohairZ Canada254 Posts May 16 2011 05:51 GMT #1 I have an Acer Aspire M5201 Desktop, and i have previously switched out the GPU it came with for a nVidia 9800GT 1gb. Now im changing the processor from an AMD PhenomX4 9500 2.2ghx to a AMD Phenom ii X4 black edition 3.4ghz and when i start up my computer, under dxdiag etc, it says Processor model unknown and lists it as 800mHz. I searched for BIOS updates but the acer site doesnt have much, for my version i seem to already have the latest BIOS update for my motherboard version. Do i have to go buy a new motherboard or what? :S

ZenGraffix United States96 Posts May 16 2011 06:15 GMT #2 Yup the it will work with that motherboard. You will want to look in to a bios update in order for it to be recognized. The default settings are 17x200 at 1.40v

ZenGraffix United States96 Posts May 16 2011 07:04 GMT #4 You should be able to configure it manually in the bios. Just make sure it sees the full 6mb L3 cache

Rannasha Netherlands2398 Posts May 16 2011 07:40 GMT #6 What is the brand and type of your current motherboard. You may have a better chance of finding updated BIOS firmware if you go directly for the maker of the motherboard, rather than the maker of the entire pc.

ZenGraffix United States96 Posts May 16 2011 08:02 GMT #8 I'm unable to find the specific mobo for that unit. You may want to take a peek inside, see if you can make out the brand and model labelings. Possibly a revision as well.

zoohairZ Canada254 Posts May 16 2011 08:14 GMT #9 If i just buy a new, more up to date motherboard, will it fix the problem without having to do all this crazy BIOS updating? Im so confused with everything right now. The 3.4ghz black edition processor is being used right now and it works, but im pretty sure not anywhere near its full capacity since it seems to load everything slower than my previous processor. If i just switch out the motherboard will it work normally?

Dezzeh Netherlands45 Posts May 16 2011 18:44 GMT #12 If you have a Phenom X4 9500, a first generation Phenom, it means your mobo has an AM2+ socket. The Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition 3GHz is the fastest CPU you would be able to use. The Phenom II 965 3,4GHz is AM3 only, so I'm actually surprised it worked

zoohairZ Canada254 Posts May 16 2011 21:00 GMT #13 Okay, i got everything fixed actually. I had to do the BIOS updates one by one until i got to the latest version. I couldnt just install the latest version for some reason apparently o.O;; Well now ithe BIOS recognizes the processor and its increased my FPS dramatically in Starcraft 2 which is what i was hoping. Thanks everyone for your help! :D
